R Country Golfer Golfer SIGNATURE COURSE VOL 20 ISSUE 2 February, 2018 www.dlfgolfresort.com Dear Member, Every golfer's dream is to play different courses beyond his home course through tournaments. Last month the Club Calendar was planned with three major tournaments allowing golfers from different communities to compete alongside our members. In continuation of the tournament fever, we are now set for the marquee event Hero Indian Open. 144 golfers will be competing on our course for a purse of USD 1.75 million! Shaun and his team have prepared the course well in time for the big day. They are meticulously planning the work with least disturbance to the members. With this event being aired live across 60+ countries, we can boast of our course to be the best! We hosted the Madhav Rao Scindia tournament with its usual glam of who s who of the town. Madhavrao Scindia Foundation is recognized for its encouragement and support to the budding golfers year after year. The event was followed by a friendly tournament played between Delhi Golf Society members and our club golfers. The tournament was played over 18 holes and we bagged the running trophy as a team. This year, yet again, we welcomed the golfers from Modernite alumni competing for the trophy. 120 golfers teed off late morning post a hearty brunch followed by gala dinner in the evening. Off the course, the tennis season culminated with prize distribution held at the Sports Complex. The season had begun in October with nominations from members in different age groups. Each league match, played on weekends, was an elimination round highlighting the winners. March hints to an exciting start with the Indian Open and social activities to keep you entertained. Hope to see you at the club along with your kith and kin. Happy Golfing Vishal Bharti Asst. Vice President Your Invitation HERO INDIAN OPEN 2018 8-11 MARCH DLF GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB, GURUGRAM

Delhi Golf Society Vs DLF Golf & Country Club On the 12th, a small but serious, friendly golf tournament was initiated with the Delhi Golf Society to enable golfers of the Delhi NCR region to connect. The interest was such that we received an overwhelming response and sadly had to curtail the entries. Each side fielded 12 teams comprising of 2 golfers each and was played to a Best Ball Four Ball Match Play format over 18 Holes, with the winning team accruing two points and one for a drawn match. Prakash Bhandari led the DGS with the low handicappers the like Romit Bose, Gen. Vikas Kapur, Sanjaya Verma, Bhupender Berry, Park Davis etc., Our team was equally matched with the likes of Ashwani Khanna, Bipin Bajaj, Chandresh & Monica Jajoo, Chris Tobit, Astha Mittal, Hardip Singh, Mukta Malhotra and Arul Sood to name a few. DLF vs DGS - All set to go DLF team captain Ashwani Khanna receives the trophy from Prakash Bhandari Abdul Trumboo with Neeraj and DGS members The visitors were awed by our course and the perfect weather conditions ensured that everyone enjoyed their round. As each team finished their round they poured into the Pavilion and eagerly awaited the stragglers, hoping their side score would improve. The first round went to Team DLF, they beat DGS convincingly and got to retain the running trophy. Prakash Bhandari along with our AVP Vishal Bharti gave away the prizes and announced that the return match would be held at DGC in April. Formalities over, everyone settled down to enjoy their lunch. Tennis Tournament Ekta with Abha and Astha with Poonam Three cheers to all winners The tennis tournament finally culminated on 18th with the prize distribution ceremony held at the Sports Complex. The winners in different categories have displayed excellent talent by playing league matches on each weekend which have worked as elimination rounds. Shreyansh Khera proved to be a consistent player winning the title in Under 8 Category, while Kunal Dhawan excelled in Under 12 and Under 14 age Categories. Anirudh Krishna/Ashutosh Muni team worked well for the ace position in Men's Double Category and Vishal Verma was declared Winner in the Men's 40+ Category. The prize distribution was conducted by Vishal Bharti, AVP, DLF Golf and Country Club and was followed by light snacks.

Madhav Rao Scindia Tournament Madhavrao Scindia Foundation was established with the core purpose to nourish and develop upcoming / budding golfers within India every year. Rashid Khan, S Chikkarangappa and Diksha Dagar are a few examples borne out of this foundation. The 16th Edition of the Madhav Rao Scindia Golf Tournament was held at our Club on 24th. The event saw 123 players from across the country participating along with the beau monde personalities like Pankaj Munjal, Rao Inderjit Singh, Farooq Abdullah, Madan Lal, Murli Kartik & Ajit Agarkar gracing the event. The teams teed off in style at 7:30 am post a hearty breakfast and of course a few selfies. The game was played over 18 holes with a shot gun start. The event sponsors Hero Cycles, Vistara, Max Bupa, Apollo Tyres, Silver Arrow, kept the golfers pepped up on the course with on-the-spot prizes at hole numbers 1,3,4,5,8,15 and 16. Arun Khanna won the DLF Straightest Drive and was bestowed with the trophy by Kavita Singh, and Sanjeev Laroia bagged the Best Gross Winner and Max Closest-to- Pin award. Green speeds can change from day to day and from hole to hole as you go through the round. There are several factors that come into play when determining how fast or slow the greens will roll. Some of these factors are predominantly related to weather which have an impact on how the greens will putt. Hot, windy weather will have a different effect on green speeds throughout the day when compared with cloudy, still days. Also turf variety can affect speeds as warm season grasses will generally play differently than cool season grasses and will require different management practices to achieve the desired speeds. Cultural practices also have an impact on speeds such as water management. Slower green speeds will generally result after rainfall or heavy irrigation and when moisture control is lost maintaining higher green speeds becomes very difficult. Shaun Satterly High green speeds cannot be sustained for long periods of time especially when environmental stress and foot traffic is high. Extended periods of high green speeds can lead to a slow decline and eventual death of the turf so it is an important balance to maintain plant health as well as provide good green speeds. Managing green speeds is a challenging affair from both the golfing and agronomic perspectives.

Modernite Golf Tournament Modern School Old Students Association (MSOSA), is one of the most active and vibrant alumni organizations in the country with a membership of more than 18,000 across the globe, since 1957. This Scholarship Fund was instituted by MSOSA to enable deserving and needy students to acquire education in Modern School. As a part of their event calendar, the 13th Modernite Golf Tournament was scheduled on 16th at our club. Rajiv Singh a Modernite himself, as usual, contributed actively to the cause by graciously sponsoring the event. 128 Modernites from different Batches of 1959 to 2016 participated for the coveted trophy and as usual, Vishal Uppal did a commendable job in managing the whole event. The event was sponsored by Thai Tourism, DamiIano, Fresca Juices, Snowhite and 8 PM Foods and the Grand Dragon hotel which spoiled the golfers with a lavish goody bag post their registrations. All the golfers received T Shirts displaying their team spirit on and off the course. This year leading the golfers gang, as usual, was Maj General Ajay Sood from the Batch of 1961. As they teed off in the afternoon the golfers finished off the game by evening rushing straight to the Garden Café for the prize distribution followed by tanking up their spirits. Heartiest congratulations to all the winners. Hope to see you again at the next edition of the series. Bake the potatoes until almost tender (potatoes should still have a little bite) 45 minutes to 1 hour. Allow to cool, and then peel and grate them. Season well with salt and pepper. INCREASE OVEN TEMP TO 425 DEGREES. Spray two muffin pans generously with cooking spray. Scoop 3 to 4 tablespoons of grated potatoes into each muffin cup. Use your fingers to gently press the sides and bottom in each muffin hole to make a nest (don't press the potatoes firmly against the pan; they should sit lightly in the pan). Spray again (very lightly!) with cooking spray. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Watch and make sure they do not burn. (If they seem like they're not browning, kick up the temp to 450.) Remove when Abhijit Dey the nests are golden brown. Allow the nests to cool. Crack an egg into each one. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and bake until the whites are set, about 15 minutes. Don't be concerned if some whites bake differently; no two nests will look alike! Remove from the muffin pan with a spoon or fork, and serve.

Academy News DLF GOLF ACADEMY This Month's Achievers Winning Smile!! Tvesa Malik won the 4th leg of the Hero Women s Pro Golf Tour 2018, played at the Oxford Golf Resorts, Pune fro 14-16 February. Her three day score was a total of 222 (77+75+70). Neha Tripathi Neha Tripathi finished runner-up in the 5th leg of the Hero Women s Professional Golf Tour, played at Jaypee Greens. Fitness Tip of the Month by Anjali Yadav Golfers are athletes, and they should train like one! A lot of people believe golf is just a technical sport but that s not the case. Golf requires strength, flexibility, endurance and power. Indoor rowing meets all of these requirements, add some specific strength work on the rowing machine and you'll be on your way to a stronger game of golf. A great non-weight-bearing exercise machine, a Anjali Yadav rowing machine uses both your upper and lower body muscles to increase your muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance along with working over full body conditioning. In the golf swing, power comes from your core muscles, while speed comes from arms, wrists and hands. These elements combined give you distance, and every golfer is trying to get more distance. Learning to execute the rowing sequence consistently while increasing the intensity will translate to a stronger controlled golf swing. Do let us know, if you'd like to try some good Rowing Machine workouts at our fully equipped new fitness studio, under the guidance of our strength & conditioning coach. Vertical Gear Effect Short game lesson Kids enjoying speed and agility game during fitness session Callaway Demo Day The latest offering from Callaway, 'Rogue' driver, Fairway woods, Hybrids & Irons were on display over the weekend. The new Jail Break Technology from Callaway has now been incorporated into the Fairway woods and the Hybrids. A large number of members experienced the new equipment and a substantial increase in distance with the Rogue. The members also enjoyed individual fitting sessions on the TrackMan. Stay Fit with Shilpa Arora Pre- game food choices Food eaten before your game should appeal to you and be well tolerated by your body. Eggs are loaded with protein and are easily digested by most people. Boiled eggs can be packed and taken to the course if they are chilled or you can order scrambled eggs / tofu with your choice of veggies. One large egg contains 6 grams of protein and 1.5 grams of BCAA. (Branched Chain Amino Acids). Combine that with fresh fruits, especially fruits low in fiber such as bananas, watermelon, peaches and grapes. Low fiber is recommended as it s digested fairly quickly and you are not carrying a load of undigested foodstuff during your game. You may also take coffee or tea which have known benefits associated with caffeine, possibly as little as 1 or 2 cups (depending on your body size). Strongly brewed coffee before the game and exercise has shown to improve endurance in athletes who are not chronic users. Anitya Chand This month, let s have a look at a very important aspect that affects the flight of the ball Gear Effect. Gear effect is of two types Vertical and Horizontal. Gear effect happens when a ball is struck away from the center of gravity of a golf club and is far more pronounced in hybrids and woods as compared to irons. Basically, if the ball is struck on the sweet spot there is no/minimal gear effect. Let s consider vertical gear effect first. Vertical gear effect happens when the golf ball is struck either above or below the center of gravity of the golf club and has a big effect on the launch angle and the back spin of the ball. The gear effect on a vertical plane is explained in the illustration where in the golf ball and the club head rotate in opposite directions due to the off-center contact. Assume that you are hitting a driver. If the loft of the driver is 10 degrees, it is 10 degrees only at the center of the club face and goes down to a p p r o x i m a t e l y 5 degrees at the bottom of the face and goes up to approximately 14 degrees at the top of the face. This is due to the vertical roll on the face of the driver. Now, if a golf ball is hit below the center of gravity or on the low part of the club face, the ball will launch lower than normal. This is because the effective loft at this point on the face is much lower than 10 degrees and the club face will rotate forwards thereby delofting it. This will also produce a counter clockwise movement on the golf ball thereby increasing the spin rate and helping the ball carry more in the air, even though the launch angle was low. Thus, this golf ball will start low and then rise up(provided there is enough speed) as the spin rate is high. The opposite is true if you hit the golf ball above the center of gravity of the driver. Here, the effective loft is higher than 10 degrees as well as gear effect will cause the club face to rotate backwards thereby further increasing the effective loft and thereby giving the golf ball a higher launch. This gear effect will produce a counter clockwise effect on the golf ball wherein the spin rate shall decrease and help the ball go through the wind as it takes off. This combination of a high launch and low spin rate can be quite dramatic for distance. In fact, a ball launched at 150 mph with 8 degrees of launch and 4000 rpm spin = 238 yards carry 16 degrees of launch and 2000 rpm spin = 259 yards carry That s 20 yards extra by only changing launch and spin.
