2 Club Chairman & Indoor Secretary Keith Pettit writes Membership news unfortunately outdoor recruitment this summer has not brought the rewards deserving of the efforts of our recruitment team who have again worked extremely hard to bring in new members. Our focus now changes to indoor recruitment and we are holding taster days on Saturday 17 th, Saturday 24 th and Sunday 25 th September between 9.30am and 4.0pm. Encourage your family, friends and neighbours to come along and try bowls at our indoor facility. Indoor coaching for new members will be on Tuesdays 11am to 1pm throughout the winter. Wedmore Playing Fields Committee the next phase of the site development is to raise sufficient funds over the next couple of years to build the new Sports Pavilion and to tarmac the final section of the car park. Club improvements continue new underlay has been fitted to the indoor rinks during the summer and we are optimistic that the bowling line fault down the centre of the rinks has been improved. Dare I say, even eradicated? We wait opinions and comments with baited breath. The new underlay will not however cure wrong biases or bowls in the ditch, sorry about that. The new flagpole was duly erected earlier this year and the footpath lights have been changed with more modern fittings. Additional lockers will be installed hopefully before the new indoor season commences and a new equipment shed installed during the Autumn. Please use our new Dyson hand dryers, hand towels will be gradually withdrawn to reduce our waste. Speaking of waste, thanks to all those who have assisted with the disposal of bar and kitchen waste throughout the 2

3 A WARNING - Perfect Pave will be working on the footpaths in front of the Clubhouse and south and west of the green from Monday 19 th September for several weeks with access to the Clubhouse for 1 week from the 19 th difficult, so please take care if visiting the premises. Web Site www.isleofwedmorebowlsclub.org is up and running and our thanks to all contributors for their updates and articles. On the outdoor bowling front, another well planned and managed outdoor season comes to a close and our fixtures secretaries and team Captains deserve our thanks and congratulations for their endeavours. The ladies have had mixed results this season but continue to do their best and as I write are currently battling it out with North Petherton in the quarter final of the Fear Plate. The men s A team have performed creditably and consolidated their place in SBA Premier Two. Whilst the B team have had less success and look as though relegation looms. By the time you read this hopefully the men s triples league team will be champions of the Clevedon and District league whilst the Weston and District League team fight relegation. This year s BWBA Pairs Tournament was well supported by Club members with excellent catering and assistance on the green. If you remember last year s event was cancelled due to lack of entries and only 6 teams entered this year, but the Club continue to offer support. Indoor Section once again there has been good support for indoor bowls throughout the summer with drives on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The forthcoming winter season once again contains a very comprehensive playing and social programme as you will see from the fixture booklet. The indoor selection committee for 2016/17 will be Barbara Disbrey and Jean Wheller for ladies matches, Barbara/ Jean and Bob Dearden for mixed friendlies, Bob for men s friendlies and Eddie Payne and myself for men s SCIBA matches. Team co-ordinators - please ensure your match schedules are delivered to your players and not left dormant in the Club mailbox. 3

A reminder that the final date for receipt of all indoor competition entries is the 9 th October, entries to Jean Wheller / Mike Green please. Please remember that if you enter competitions you need to be available for finals weekend on 18th and 19th March 2017 and if you enter the triples competition you also need to be available for 1 st round matches on 26 th and 27 th November 2016. Anyone wishing to enter County competitions please add your name and details to the form on the notice board, closing date 22 nd October. Saturday evening programme of drives, social events and fun bowls has again been arranged inclusive of a Quiz Evening and fun bowls evenings with supper. Events start at 6.30pm and are open to all and organised by Iris and Paul Rowlett. An Australian Pairs Day will be held on Monday 26th September and a Triples Day on Wednesday 28th September. Lists are on the notice board but numbers are limited so be quick. Club Triples Day will be held again over the Xmas and New Year break to help reduce festive waistlines, join us on Wednesday 28 th December. The new indoor membership year commenced on 1 st September with the 30 annual subscription now being due. Rates for Indoor rink charges are unchanged and a comprehensive list can be seen on the notice board and in the A4 booking folder. Information for any new members - the 1 hour session 1 to 2pm is to allow practice with no pre-booking required, just come along bowl (and pay in the normal way). Up to 16 can be accommodated so there shouldn t be an attendance problem, but always pre-check the A4 booking folder since there are occasional Club matches and of course carpet vacuuming once per week which takes priority. In addition an Umbrella takes place most Thursdays between 11.0am and 1.0pm and whilst there are a few regular attenders, it gives members a further opportunity to turn up and play. Rink sessions are still available for any members wishing to form a weekly or occasional roll up group, if interested contact me. 4 4

Wanted - New Members 5 Free indoor taster days will be held on Saturday 17 th September Saturday 24 th September Sunday 25th September Any time between 9.30am and 4.00pm for prospective new members come along and encourage your family, friends and neighbours to try their hand at bowls. Keith Pettit 5

6 Message from the Men s Captain Yet another season nears the end. At the time of writing we have one A team game to play which may put us in Premier One, two games to play in the Cleveden &District league which could give us the top spot. We are not doing so well in the Weston and District league or the County B team. Next year we are putting in a C team so I hope you will all make a commitment to sign up for games on Saturdays because we will need 36 players on a regular basis We have missed out on the Weston & District cup but have won back the Mark Moor and Wells Friendship Cups. We have also won the C& D Charity Cup for the first time and web are in the final for the C&D League Charity Cup for the first time too. With the new C team plus extra mens and mixed friendly games booked for net year the opportunities to play will be increased and I hope we will have a more contented membership for those of you who desired more games this year. The job of being the mens Captain has been made easier with the help of the Leagues Captains and I thank them all. There are too many of you who have given me practical and verbal help to name individually but I do thank you all. It has also been a pleasure to work with Keith Julie and her Vices!! I know look forward to the indoor season meeting you as team-mates or rivals. Alan Birch 6

7 Message from the Ladies Captain The start of my year was marred, sadly, by the resignation of my Vice Captain Chris due to the ill health of her partner David. We hope to see Chris back with us for the indoor season. My sincere thanks to Audrey for stepping in and for doing an excellent job. I wish her and her team a happy and successful 2017. We have enjoyed another very busy year with varying degrees of success. We do not have the final league results at the moment but we are hoping to finish near the top in two of them. The games have been very well supported but tailed off towards the end of the season. Special thanks to Carol, my selector for her help and advice, also to all of our ladies who help on match days in different ways to ensure everything runs smoothly making my job so much easier. Our ladies lunch will be in February and I hope our indoor ladies will join us again, the more the merrier! I have enjoyed my year and found it enlightening and I would encourage anyone who is asked to be Captain to consider it carefully. The knowledge gained is invaluable and there is always someone to help and advise. Until next year Over and Out Julie Collins 7

8 INDOOR COMPETITIONS SEASON 2016/2017 A very big thank you to all those who submitted competition entry forms at the Indoor Social Evening on Friday 2nd September. We received 29 forms covering 105 separate competition entries on the night. A little disappointing when compared with last year s record entry of 38 forms covering 131 separate competition entries. So you can see that we still have some way to go if we are to reach last year s final total of 186 separate entries. We need more entries across the board but, in particular, we need more ladies in the 4 Wood, Pairs and Open 4 Wood competitions. So, ladies and gentlemen, please keep your entries coming. You should have received an entry form with your Summer News Letter, but if you have mislaid it a further supply can be found on the notice board. So please complete one and ensure that you submit it before the closing date of 9 th October. Completed forms, together with fees, may be handed to either Jean or Mike at the club, or placed in a sealed envelope addressed to either competition secretary and posted in the appropriate mail box. Jean Wheller and Mike Green Competition Secretaries 8

9 INDOOR LEAGUES. Once again some of the leagues have had to be modified this year, owing to the changes in numbers of players for some sessions. We will continue to run the Monday morning league with just four teams. However, the Monday afternoon Australian Pairs has proved rather too popular and now has 10 teams, which makes the scheduling more difficult and requires a few games to be played in the evening so make sure you get the correct times for play. Wednesday afternoons now have six teams (instead of seven), so that makes the schedule rather more regular, but Friday afternoons now have five teams instead of four. The Friday evening Australian Pairs league has proved much less popular than Monday afternoons and now has only four teams. Is this just the general reluctance to turn out in the evenings? The Saturday afternoon league has however increased from six to eight teams. I must repeat my previous comments that there are still plenty of opportunities for extra players in the teams and this makes it much easier for the team leaders to draw up sensible and flexible schedules. New players are particularly welcomed in the club leagues where experience can best be gained in a (mildly) competitive atmosphere. When the team leaders have drawn up their schedules, do please make sure that the team members have collected their copies not left them unread in the post-box so that they fail to turn up to their first game. A notice will be put up asking for names of people willing to play in the leagues occasionally, to cover those times when teams are short of players for some reason. Please remember to put your name on the list if you can play sometimes, and for the Team leaders do remember to look at the list when you are short of players. Dennis Stansfield (01934 843226) 9

12 OLD JOG S AGONY CORNER Hello there my good readers, here s Old Jog back once again in this august journal to give ee the benefit of my advice on problems of a personal or bowls nature. Since I last wrote I ve had many letters asking for advice but, since space is a bit limited, ere s a couple that might interest ee. Dear Jog, I have been a club member here at Puddlecumbe for 55 years and I have never won a trophy. This year, to my great delight, I have progressed through to the final of the Over 70 s competition, but I am very concerned that my opponent is a lady for whom, shall I say, I hold a somewhat affectionate regard. She is a very good player having won numerous competitions, tournaments etc. and is a regular for the county. I desperately want to win, but I am very concerned that if I should do so, she may take it amiss and end our relationship. Algernon P Bates. Puddlecumbe Bowling Club Dear Algernon, You do ave a problem and avin ad dealings with the opposite sex myself, I would advise ee to tread very carefully. Try to be fair, but slightly detached from proceedings. Do compliment er on er good shots, sympathise with er on her wayward shots, but don t pick up er bowls for er or wipe them if it be a wet day. She might think you are being patronising and this will certainly make er mad. Since you say this lady is the object of your affections, the best solution of all would be to take er out to dinner the night before the final and propose marriage to er. If she accepts then you don t have a problem, cos win or lose you ll still have that trophy on yer mantelpiece. Jog.Footnote. We have just heard that Mr Bates lost the final to Mrs. Agnes Throttlewell, but all turned out well. Algernon and Agnes are now happily married and currently honeymooning in Sidmouth Ed Newsletter compiled, edited and distributed by Lynda Dearden. 12
