GPMC NEWS The Greater Pittsburgh Mustang Club Newsletter Visit our website at: www.gpmc.org Next Meeting: June 3 Meeting at North Park 7:00 p.m. Board Mtg. 7:30 p.m. General Mtg. Volume 24 Issue 6 June 2009 NEW MEETING LOCATION!!!!! The June 3 meeting will be held at the Roosevelt Grove in North Park.. Greetings Pony Lovers It was a dark and stormy night but that didn t stop a loyal band of intrepid GPMC members from attending this season s first outdoor meeting, held at Boyce Park. We thought we had picked an ideal location, but that was on a warm, dry day. On May 6 th, with rain pounding down on our heads, we realized that there were no steps, or even gravel paths, leading from the parking lot down to the picnic shelter which didn t provide much shelter when the wind blew. There was some slipping, sliding and shivering, but the camaraderie was top-notch. We got a lot done, as you ll see in the Minutes. Inside this issue: President s Message Minutes of last meeting Officers & Directors 1 2 Upcoming Events 4 Let s So Surfin Now Talladega Walk of Fame 3 5 6 Sponsors 7 Notices 8 Our activities continue apace, as a small, fun-seeking group of members took a road trip to Dellalo s in Jeanette (who knew there were that many kinds of pasta?) then on to the Stone Villa Winery on May 16 th. The wine, the entertainment, the ambiance and the good fellowship was enjoyed by all. And I d like to personally thank everyone who came out for the 4 th Annual Pennies for Patients poker run on May 17 th. Between the GPMC and the Pitt Birds, I think there were more Fords than Corvettes present. The Cigna Riders also came and dropped off many pounds of pennies. Jason Uhler took third prize with his poker hand a Jack-high straight. The early count shows that over $2,500 was raised for the St. Barnabas Pennies for Patients Fund. This is a final reminder that if you haven t already, NOW is the time to register for Can-Am. The deadline to register is June 5 th. It looks like we ll have a good-sized contingent from the Burgh heading up to Ontario the last weekend in June. Some folks are driving up early, others later on Friday. Don t forget our all Ford-Powered show on June 14 th. This is the Club s signature event of the year, so we expect to have a great member turnout to help with all the activities. To have your Mustang judged in class M (the GPMC member class), you ll need to register and pay the $10 registration fee. The prior weekend (June 7 th ) is the North Hills Historic Auto Club s annual car show, which will be held at the Mars Middle School at the intersection of Rt. 228 and 3 Degree Rd. I know that many of our members have Mustangs worthy of winning one of the many trophies. My wife Jennie & I will be judging class 6 (1964-1969 Stock Only). And Jennie s 57 Bel Air is the car pictured on this year s dash plaque. For more info you can go to: http://clubs.hemmings.com/frameset.cfm?club=nhhac and click on Car Show. For the first time, the GPMC has purchased two Patron Spots at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix on race day, Sunday, July 19 th. All members are welcome to come and share the shade under the canopies. We ll be organizing pot-luck snacks, and will have sign-up sheets at the next two meetings. As you ll read in the minutes, the Kings Family Restaurant in Harmarville has asked if we d be interested in holding car cruises there later this summer. The membership supported the idea at the May meeting, so we re exploring what it will take to hold three monthly cruises, starting in July. If you re willing to chair this undertaking, please contact our Activities Director, Dwight Hutton, to volunteer. I look forward to seeing all of you at the June 3 rd meeting in North Park. You should have already received directions. You can also download them from the club s website. Keep those motors runnin, Ken Barker

GPMC News June 2009 Page 6 Talladega Walk of Fame Cast Your Vote By Andy Schor The Talladega-Texaco Walk of Fame is a park in Talladega, Alabama honoring the late Davey Allison along with Nascar drivers chosen by the fans each year. There is a marble monument to Allison. Other drivers are memorialized by bronze plaques. This year, one of the racers being voted on has a local connection. The driver is Jack Smith, and this is his story: My sister-in-law's grandfather was Jack Smith who is featured (obviously) in the inactive drivers section. Jack raced in the very first NASCAR race in 1949 at Charlotte and finished 13th. He won 21 Grand National Races in the next 14 years. He died in October, 2001. (from his obituary) Jack Smith's love of racing began in Georgia in the 1940s when he worked at a service station near Roswell. He began running against local bootleggers across fields, on rough dirt tracks and asphalt superspeedways. Smith won his first race at Martinsville Speedway in 1956, won the Most Popular Driver Award in 1959 and moved to Spartanburg in 1960 to work with legendary team owner Bud Moore. His 21 wins are 24th all-time. "Jack was a hell of a competitor," Moore said. "Jack was a good race driver back in his day. In his time, he was about as good as any of them that come along." One of Smith's more memorable races was a loss when his car tumbled over the wall at the Darlington Raceway in 1954, as he tried to chase down race leader Fireball Roberts. He flipped five times and landed in the parking lot. Please join Jack's fans, family and supporters and vote at http://talladegawalk.com/ Jim & Cheryl take a camera shy Andrew to the opening night of the Starlite Car Cruise season.
