The Dock Line January 2005 Issue Official Newsletter Of The Space Coast Model Sailing Club Happy New Year From The Commodore Your new SCMSC Board held its first meeting of the year on the 10th of January. Please find highlights of the minutes elsewhere in this letter. However, I would like to use this space to introduce you to your new Commodore and comment further on some of the discussion held by the Board during our meeting. Personal Profile I am a retired US Army Colonel having spent 27 years with the Corps of Engineers. My formal engineer training at the bachelor and masters level was in mechanical and electrical engineering with a little civil on the side. I finished my work force experience in June 2001, in the practice of Business Enterprise Engineering how people process information and make decisions. As you read this I am publishing a book, God s Word and 21st Century Terrorism: The Revelation of September 11. Nita and I continue to sail our 21 foot San Juan sloop that we ve had for 31 years, and race it monthly with the fleet at Patrick AFB on the Banana River.. I seem to be able to win more regularly at that than with my Soling at the pond in Wickham Park. Board discussion. Of all our topics we can boil them down into two categories: administrative organization of the club s activities for 2005; and, operational events and philosophy for executing our charter or club purpose: to promote the designing and racing of radio controlled sailboats. Our Board discussion focused on this topic beyond the obvious mechanics of building boats and racing them once or twice a week. There is an implied emotional return for participating in this sport that transcends building a boat and maneuvering it around the pond. We discussed the characteristics of this emotional return and how we might enhance them for all members. See you at the pond! Steve

Space Coast Model Sailing Club Board Of Directors Meeting Minutes January 10, 2005 The meeting was held at the home of Commodore Steve Rutz, and began at 7:OOPM. Present: Commodore, Dana Jones, Treasurer, Betty Rottmann, Secretary, John Bluhm, Dennis Dwyer, Adam Rottmann, Bob Comstock and Steve Spatenga. It was noted that the Club began in March 1993 with 15 members. Treasurers Report: Balance on hand $ 663.00. 37 members have paid, 16 have not. They have until January 31 to pay up. Dana reminded Board we are a nonprofit organization. (We need to establish a budget to ensure we don t have significant excess at the end of each year open task). Minutes of November 20 Read and approved. The 2 Revere Bowl memorial trophies donated by Howard Crusey were explained. DISCUSSIONS: Club Rules: Review of Constitution, By Laws and Rules should be done. Motion by Bob Comstock to do so. The Commodore, John Bluhm and Donal Bryant will make proposal to Board. Regattas: Bob Comstock reported as follows: 1. All Florida Cup will be March 19/20 in Daytona 2. Memorial Regatta (internal) May 21 3. Independence Day Jul 9 (AMYA Invitational) 4. Mystery November 19. Banquet Award dinner will also be November 19. Steve Spatenga will look into finding a place to hold same in lieu of Chowders or the Cove. 5. Discussion with regard to EC 12 Regatta that may be December 3/4. Commodore will discuss this with Tony DiMarzio. 6. December 10 will be the start of the 2006 series. Safety rules for sailing. Steve Spatenga will discuss these at Wednesday sailing. Sailing Rules: At each sailing one rule will be explained to both old and new members: Dennis Dwyer will do this on Saturdays and Adam Rottmann on Wednesdays. Dock Line: Will try to do one bi-monthly, and will include a short biography of one or two of the Board members, and a rule of the month. Socials and Community events: Discussed the possibility of having special races on off (free) days and trying to have more exposure to various community groups. In addition to the annual banquet dinner a dedicated picnic will be held that may include a pot-luck offering (date TBD). The possibility of an outreach event to youth organizations was discussed without conclusion at this time. Commodore Letter: Commodore Rutz read the letter he submitted to be included in the Dock Line. Club Equipment: Adam Rottmann made a motion the club buy their own radio so members do not have to use their own. Motion seconded by Bob Comstock. John Bluhm will shop for the new one with a limit of $150.00 for same. Approved.

Board Minutes Cont. It was decided that all the old equipment: Old Tape Radio, CD Radio and the walkie-talkies be donated or whatever in order to get rid of them. Bob Comstock will take care of this. Adjornment: Motion made by John Bluhm, second by Bob Comstock to adjoin at 9:10 PM Respectfully submitted, Equipment missing: Does anyone have the large white course board? Someone took it after a Regatta last year. Not the EC 12 regatta. Overdue Dues Due! Note from the Treasurer As of 1/5/05, 32 members have paid their dues; 16 have not. I have sent post cards to those who have not. Remember, if dues are not paid by 1/31, you may not sail on Saturdays or "club members only regattas". Dana Jones, Treasurer Meeting Agenda There are no general or board meetings presently schedule, therefore no agenda has been established. As noted in the minutes, a subcommittee consisting of the Commodore, Board Member John Bloom and the Editor will be reviewing the club's Constitution, Bylaws and Permanent rules for potential changes. Any member who sees a need to change any existing rule should make their views known to a member of this subcommittee. Racing Rules ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing 2005-2008 came into effect on January 1, 2005. Copies can be obtained from Steve Spatenga for $13.50 or less. We race by these rules. (Well, I'm sure that at least one member does,) Is there anyone out there who knows what changes have been made and if and how they effect us? I am sure that our esteemed Board of Directors members will bring us up to date in their weekly briefings. My hope is that they will also write these briefings up so that they can be preserved here. How about it Adam and Dennis? Member Profiles This month, the Commodore has provided his own mini profile within his article. Future articles will profile other members of the board of directors, then our newer members.

Past Events Several significant events have transpired since the last Dock Line was issued. Unfortunately, requests for written information about the Mystery and EC-12 Regattas have gone unanswered. Hopefully, the officials of future events will at least be willing to provide written insights as well as score sheets. Remember, this newsletter depends on member support and can only be as good as it s inputs. Fortunately, Past Secretary Peggy Jones was kind enough to provide the following photos from those events. Thanks Peggy. EC-12 Regatta Scorekeeper Region 3 Director Looks like someone had a birthday. Ticket Seller Mystery Winner I thought the whole idea of this regatta was to share the wealth, not same old, same old. Skipper Of The Year ----------

Builders Tips Board member/skipper/builder, big John Bluhm has started building a new boat hull from scratch. The attached 8 photos document his progress to date. As he says, "This is just the start, I don't know where it will go from here." He has the Shape defined and is looking for help to convert it to a plug and to pull at least one carbon fiber hull from it. Who is going to help? I would love see (and photograph) this happening. If he doesn't get help, he will probably use what he has as a wooden hull just to see how she sails.

Editorial A New Year, A New Editor, A New Dock Line. When I accepted the assignment as Editor, it was on the basis that the Dock Line would essentially be folded into the club web site. This is not to say that the Dock Line will simply be absorbed, but, this and all future issues, will be published as PDF files available on the Web site. The table below shows the how information will be dispersed through the web site and the Dock Line and also indicates information sources. The redundancies between the Dock Line and the club website have been eliminated. The yearly schedule that includes RD assignments and the race series score sheets will no longer be included in the Dock Line. They will be updated weekly on the web site.
