DOGS OPEN OVC PLAY AGAINST TENNESSEE STATE The Samford University softball team will begin play in its 2005 Ohio Valley Conference season on Saturday as the Bulldogs host the Tennessee State Tigers in a series-opening doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m., at Bulldog Field. Samford (7-13) heads into conference play looking to pick up from where it left off against OVC opponents last season. In 2004, the Bulldogs streaked to a 17-9 conference record and strung together winning streaks of five and six games within a three-week span. Samford qualified for the league's postseason tournament in its inaugural season in the conference and defeated Jacksonville State, 9-8, in the opening round of the six-team competition. Tennessee State (2-12) finished the 2004 campaign with a 16-41 overall record and a 5-21 mark against OVC opponents. The Tigers concluded the season in a two-way tie for ninth place with Morehead State and didn't qualify for postseason play. TSU is currently in the midst of a three-game losing streak and has been defeated in 11 of its previous 12 contests. The Tigers have been outscored, 33-67, this season and are allowing an average of 4.8 runs per game. Samford (7-13) was led offensively by sophomore Shelley Stanley who batted a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate and slammed a three-run home run to dead-center field in the top of the third inning. The Bulldogs' senior rightfielder is tied for the team lead in home runs with two. Alabama (28-6) extended its winning streak to four-consecutive games and improved to 11-2 against the Bulldogs. The Crimson Tide jumped out to an early 5-0 lead as Alabama scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning. After Jackie Wilkins led off the frame with a walk, Ashley Courtney reached on a bunt single down the third-base line and Capper Reed was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Samford's starting pitcher, Susanna Meyer, then earned the first out of the inning by striking out All-Southeastern Conference performer Stephanie VanBrakle to bring up Dominique Accetturo. With one out and the bases loaded, Accetturo connected on the first pitch of her at-bat and lined a shot over the fence in left field for a grand slam. The home run, her team-high fifth of the season, gave Alabama an early 4-0 lead. The Crimson Tide's next batter, Dani Woods, then made the score 5-0 as the freshman first baseman skied a shot over the right-field fence. Samford rallied for a pair of singles in the top of the second inning but left Stanley and Heather Williams stranded on base to remain scoreless. The Bulldogs trimmed Alabama's lead to 5-4 in the top of the third inning as Stanley spearheaded a four-run rally by slamming a three-run home run to dead-center field. After senior second baseman Kelly Smith singled to right field to drive in Liz Pearse from third, Stanley crushed a fastball from VanBrakle and sent a towering shot over the center-field fence. The blast, which was her second home run of the season, scored Trisha Holman and Smith, and pulled Samford within one run at 5-4. Samford finished the game with four runs on six hits and tallied its seventh home run of the 2005 campaign. PLAYER OF THE WEEK - - SUSANNA MEYER, PITCHER Finished the first week of March with a phenomenal 0.48 earned run average in starts against both Birmingham-Southern and UAB at home in the 2005 Union State Bank Magic City Classic. She pitched a total of 14.2 innings and registered 17 strikeouts, while only allowing four walks. The Bulldogs sophomore from Davie, Fla., limited her opponents to a.189 batting average and only gave up one earned run on 10 scattered hits. She leads the team with 69 total strikeouts. - - - - - Samford University Softball Game Notes - - - - - SMITH MOVING IN ON SAMFORD S ALL-TIME RECORDS The Bulldogs Kelly Smith is currently ranked among the top-10 in five of Samford s all-time statistical categories. A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., Smith ranks second in career doubles (34), third in runs batted in (70), fifth in home runs (10) and holds the sixth-place position in both alltime runs scored (67) and batting average (.285, 140-for-492). Samford s senior second baseman only needs nine RBI to become Samford s all-time leader in the category with 79. Smith is 10 doubles shy of becoming the all-time doubles leader with 44. MEYER MOWING DOWN THE COMPETITION Samford s talented starting pitcher, Susanna Meyer, has been mowing down the competition this season. The Bulldogs competitive 5-9 sophomore is averaging 1.2 strikeouts per inning and led the team with 157 K s during the 2004 campaign. A native of Davie, Fla., Meyer has already accumulated 69 strikeouts this season and owns a solid 2.03 earned run average. She has picked up four of Samford s seven wins this season and has hurled five complete games. From Feb. 25 until March 17, Meyer only allowed a total of four earned runs in 41.0 innings for an ERA of 0.68. During that time, she limited the opposition to a.166 batting average and compiled a 3-3 record. SCORING EARLY A KEY TO SAMFORD S SUCCESS The Bulldogs own a 4-1 record this season when they score a run in the first inning. Samford also owns a 5-3 record when it scores first, but when it doesn t score first, the opposition holds a substantial 10-2 record. The Bulldogs own an unblemished 6-0 record when they are leading after the fourth inning, but are only 1-9 when they are trailing after the fourth frame. Samford has not come back to win a game this season when it was losing after the fifth inning. Jumping out on their opponents early has been a key for the Bulldogs this season and they are currently tied with the opposition in scoring, 17-17, in the first inning. Samford is leading its opponents in scoring in the ninth inning as the Bulldogs have outscored the opposition, 5-2, in the ninth frame. SAMFORD PICKED FIFTH IN PRESEASON OVC RANKINGS The Bulldogs were picked to finish fifth in the OVC s preseason standings according to a vote taken by the conference's 10 head coaches on Jan. 27. Eastern Kentucky, which took home both the OVC regular-season and tournament titles last year, was picked to finish first, while Jacksonville State was tabbed as the second-place team and Tennessee-Martin was predicted to finish third. Tennessee Tech was selected to finish fourth, while Samford rounded out the top-five. STATISTICAL COMPARISON Samford Category Tennessee State 7-13.....................
