The series began in 1927 when Samford (3-3) picked up a 41-35 victory on the road in Athens, Tenn. Tennessee Wesleyan (2-9) has struggled this season and is currently in the midst of a threegame losing streak. The team is currently 0-6 on the road during the 2004-05 campaign and has lost seven of its 11 games by at least 19 points. In its two earlier Division I contests, Tennessee Wesleyan fell at Birmingham-Southern, 113-61, on Nov. 27, and then lost on the road against Middle Tennessee, 81-46, on Dec. 2. Samford enters Thursday s matchup looking to end a slight slide of its own. After opening the season with an unblemished 2-0 record, the Bulldogs have dropped three of their previous four games, including the last two. On Nov. 30, the Bulldogs lost in dramatic fashion versus IUPUI, 60-58, and then fell on the road against a resurgent ULM team, 63-56. 2004-05 OVC STANDINGS CONFERENCE OVERALL School Record Pct. Robert Merritt on Dec. 3, but the Bulldogs' comeback attempt fell short versus the Louisiana- Monroe Indians, 63-56, at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. "I could say that we didn't do what we needed to do today, but actually I have to give a lot of credit to Louisiana-Monroe for doing the things that they needed to do," said Samford head coach Jimmy Tillette. "They forced us to speed up offensively and that took us out of our rhythm a little bit." Merritt, a 6-6 junior from Oklahoma City, Okla., scored 15 points in the second half of play to bring Samford (3-3) within four points, 57-53, with 3:04 remaining. At that point, the Indians' Adrian Harper hit a clutch three-point basket from the corner to increase ULM's lead to 60-53. Merritt finished the contest with a game-high 20 points. He was 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs then cut Louisiana-Monroe's lead to four points again as redshirt freshman Joe Ross Merritt knocked down a key three-point shot at 2:20 remaining in the game. Samford's 6-4 guard finished the contest with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Louisiana-Monroe (4-1) scored the last four points of the game as the Indians continued to hit their free throws. ULM shot 73.7 percent from the free-throw line against the Bulldogs and prior to the game the Tribe was shooting a stellar 77.8 percent from the charity stripe. Gary Robinson hit two free throws down the stretch and Cecil Hood added a late score to put the game out of reach, 63-56. Robinson led the Indians with a team-high 17 points. Randall Gulina, the Bulldogs' sophomore guard, caught fire in the first half of play and scored 15 of the teams' 24 points in the opening period. The Baton Rouge, La., native shot 6-of-9 from the floor in the first half and was a blistering 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. His total of 15 points was Gulina's career-high performance and he finished the game 6-of-12 from the floor. "I think that we were a little out of sync in the first half of play and it seemed like the only person that came to play was Randall Gulina," said Tillette. "He really played with some good fire out there and he kept us in the game early." Despite Gulina's first-half heroics, Samford trailed the Indians, 32-24, at intermission. The Bulldogs shot 37 percent from the floor in the first half, while Louisiana-Monroe connected on 54.5 percent of its shots. The Tribe was led by a trio of scorers in the first half, who all finished the period with six points. DeAndre Alexander, Gary Robinson and Daryl Mason each tallied six points in the first half of play to pace Louisiana-Monroe. SPORTS INFORMATION DEPARTMENT The Samford Sports Information Department is headed up by first-year director Joey Mullins and assistant director Zac Schrieber. Robert Merritt, Samford s junior forward from Oklahoma City, Okla., was named the Ohio Valley Conference's Player of the Week on Nov. 29, as the Bulldogs' sharpshooter averaged 24 points per game last week. The honor, which is awarded to the top player in the conference each week, is the first of Merritt's career and Samford's first since Jerry Smith was named the OVC Freshman of the Week on Jan. 19. Merritt scored a career-high 30 points on the road against South Alabama on Nov. 24. During the intra-state matchup, he tallied 21 of the Bulldogs' final 23 points and finished the game 10-of-19 from the floor, including a sizzling 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. Merritt also scored a game-high 18 points in the Bulldogs' 76-62 victory over Louisiana-Monroe on Nov. 27 and currently leads the team in scoring average with 17.2 points per game. BATON ROUGE BACKCOURT Samford guards Randall Gulina and Curtis West, both natives of Baton Rouge, La., started in the backcourt to open two of the Bulldogs previous three games. Gulina, a 6-1 sophomore who prepped at Central Private High School, has started all six games this season and is averaging 9.3 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. West, a graduate of Redemptorist High School in Baton Rouge, was in the starting lineup against both Louisiana-Monroe and IUPUI and is averaging 12.3 minutes per game. BROTHERLY LOVE The Bulldogs boast a pair of brothers on this season s squad in junior forward J. Robert Merritt and redshirt freshman guard Joe Ross Merritt. J. Robert is the oldest of four Merritt boys and currently leads Samford in scoring with 17.7 points per game. Joe Ross is the second-born of the four brothers and is averaging 5.5 points in 16.7 minutes a contest. The Merritt Brothers hail from Oklahoma City, Okla., and played together at Bishop McGuinness High School. J. Robert earned All-State honors as a senior and led BMHS to its third-consecutive state championship in 2000. Joe Ross was also a First-Team All-Oklahoma performer and helped guide Bishop McGuinness to a pair of state championship titles. JON OF ALL TRADES Senior forward Jon Mills has been doing it all for the Samford Bulldogs this season. He currently leads the team in rebounds with 4.2 per game and is shooting a stellar 47.6 percent from three-point land. He has led the Bulldogs in rebounding five times this season and was named the MVP of the 2004 Mohegan Sun Classic after scoring a game-high 18 points on 6-of-6 shooting. Samford s Record When... - - - - - Samford University Basketball Game Notes - - - - - BENCHMARK FOR SUCCESS After receiving a season-low four points from its bench in a 52-50 loss on the road against South Alabama, the Bulldogs tweaked their starting five a bit by inserting freshman guard Curtis West into the lineup at the point guard postion. Since the change, Samford has averaged 25.3 points per game from its non-starters, including 8.0 per contest from the ever-improving Joe Ross Merritt. Merritt, the Bulldogs redshirt freshman guard from Oklahoma City, Okla., has increased his minutes per game average to 16.7 and has scored in double digits in two of the previous three games. Senior Josh Hare has also played well coming off of the bench in Samford s previous three games. Against Louisiana-Monroe on Nov. 27, Hare finished with 12 points and was a perfect 8- of-8 from the free-throw line. The Bulldogs native of Cleveland, Tenn., followed up that performance with a solid, five-points and three-assists outing against IUPUI. SAMFORD IN THE OVC RANKINGS The Bulldogs lead the Ohio Valley Conference in three statistical rankings and currently stand among the top three teams in five additional categories. Samford is currently ranked first in the following three statistical standings: Scoring defense (58.7 ppg), 3-point field goal percentage (.457) and 3-point field goals made (9.67 avg/g). The Bulldogs are also second in assist/turnover ratio (1.17) and rebounding defense (32.0 avg/g). To add to those stats, Samford is also ranked third in the conference in free throw percentage (.726), field goal percentage (.480) and turnover margin (+2.50). Individual members of the Bulldog basketball team are also listed among the top-10 players in the conference. J. Robert Merritt is currenlty ranked second in 3-point field goals made (3.00 avg/g), while sophomore point guard Jerry Smith is in second place in assist/turnover ratio (2.14). Senior forward Bryan Boerjan is the No. 7-ranked player in OVC in steals (1.83 avg/g), while Smith (.538), Merritt (.529), Randall Gulina (.500) and Jon Mills (.476) are all among the top-10 players in 3-point field goal percentage. SCOUTING THE COMPETITION Tennessee Wesleyan heads into Thursday s contest with a 2-9 overall record on the season. The Bulldogs have lost their previous three games, including a heartbreaking 63-61 defeat versus the Univ. of Virginia College at Wise on Tuesday. Tennessee Wesleyan opened the 2004-05 season with a five-game losing streak and seven of the Bulldogs nine losses have been by at least 19 points. UTW s pair of victories this season came against Milligan College, 79-69, and Virginia Intermont College, 84-78. Freshman Zach Conner leads the team in scoring with 9.6 points per game and is followed by Mark Riden (9.2), John Ferguson (8.9) and Brandon Newton (7.1). From 1983-86, Samford rallied for three-consecutive winning seasons and combined for a 56-33 record. Samford s all-time scorer, Craig Beard, tallied 703 points during the 1984-85 season. He finished his career with 1,925 points in just three seasons. In 1985, he was a fourth-round draft pick of the Chicago Bulls. 2004-05 SAMFORD BASKETBALL GAME NOTES Head Coach Jimmy Tillette Samford's all-time winningest coach, Jimmy Tillette, is currently in his eighth season at the helm of the Bulldogs' men's basketball program. During his highly-productive tenure at Samford, Tillette has led the Bulldogs to a pair of NCAA Tournaments and has registered an impressive 76-46 record against conference opponents. Tillette quickly climbed the school's career wins list and rapidly became the only coach in Samford history to record consecutive 20-win seasons. In 1999 and 2000, Tillette guided the Bulldogs to 24 and 21 wins, respectively, and led his team to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. With a current overall record of 117-92 at Samford, Tillette passed current LSU head coach John Brady atop the Samford victory list with a 70-61 victory over Arkansas State in the second game of the 2002-03 season. The win helped Tillette reach the top of the list in only five years, compared to six seasons for Brady. In seven full seasons coaching the Bulldogs, Tillette accumulated a winning percentage of.562, which ranks seventh overall in Samford's 87 years of men's basketball history. Tillette earned the 100th victory of his career on Feb. 15, 2002, as the Bulldogs posted a thrilling 78-74 double-overtime win on the road against Georgia State. With the victory, Tillette became the first men's basketball coach in Samford history to reach the century mark in wins. Over the years, the Bulldogs have excelled under the tutelage of Coach Tillette and under his guidance Samford owns a stellar 48-12 record against conference opponents at home in Siebert Hall. During the 2003-04 campaign, the Bulldogs posted a brilliant 9-3 home record, including an unblemished 4-0 mark against non-conference opponents. As head coach, Tillette immediately made his mark on the Samford program, incorporating the Princeton-style offense, which relies on precision cuts and three-point shooting. Under Tillette, the Bulldogs have distinguished themselves statistically among the nation's best, finishing third in the nation in three-pointers made per game during the 1998-99 season. In 1999, the Bulldogs finished No. 1 in the nation in fieldgoal percentage (50.3 percent) and second in the nation in three-pointers made per game. During the 2002-03 season, Samford again performed well nationally, finishing third in three-pointers made per game (9.8) and 19th overall in scoring defense (62.7 ppg). Prior to becoming a full-fledged member of the Ohio Valley Conference in 2003, Samford was a perennial leader in the Atlantic Sun Conference since the 1978 campaign. In 2000-01, Tillette's squad set a conference record for three-pointers made in a game (23), breaking the previous mark established by the 1995 Samford team. At the conclusion of the 2000 season, the Bulldogs ranked either first or second in a total of nine of the 15 A-Sun statistical categories. In his first season at the helm, Tillette guided the Bulldogs, then the youngest team in Division I, to a 14-13 overall record and a 9-7 mark against A-Sun opponents. Tillette's first team featured a starting lineup that consisted of one senior and Tillette is Samford s all-time winningest coach with 117 career victories. four sophomores, with the remainder of the 11-man squad being totally comprised of underclassmen. After being picked to finish third in the 1998-99 A-Sun preseason poll, the Bulldogs went on a magical run that culminated with a 24-6 overall record and the school's first NCAA Tournament berth. The 24-win season was Samford's best since joining Division I in the early 1970s and came within one game of tying the school record of 25 victories set in the

Samford University Basketball Game Notes 1938-39 season. During the 1998-99 season, Tillette guided Samford to a remarkable 15-1 record in conference play, which was highlighted by a 13-game winning streak. For his efforts, Tillette was named the Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year. Tillette also served as an assistant coach at Tulane (1990-91) under Perry Clark and at Mississippi State (1989-90) under Richard Williams. A New Orleans native, Tillette proved himself for a number of years as a head coach in the high school ranks. He led hometown De La Salle High School to an impressive 196-55 overall record over seven seasons. He was named the Louisiana High School Coach of the Year after De La Salle set a state record for wins with a 40-1 mark and won the Class 4A state championship. His first coaching job was a sevenyear stint as an assistant at New Orleans' Jesuit High School. There, he served under his close friend and current Birmingham-Southern head coach Duane Reboul. Tillette is a graduate of Holy Cross College in New Orleans and earned a master's degree in history from the University of New Orleans. He is married to the former Diane Cibulski of New Orleans and the couple has one son, Tristan, whose wife, Kendra, gave birth to their first grandson, Shea, in 2003. The 1999-00 season marked Tillette's second 20-win campaign and included groundbreaking wins over both St. John's and Alabama. The Bulldogs also rallied to win the Atlantic Sun Tournament championship and earned their second NCAA Tournament appearance. Before being named the school's 27th head coach in 1997, Tillette spent eight seasons as an assistant coach, including six years at Samford, where he helped the Bulldogs earn a cochampionship in 1995-96 and the A-Sun's West Division title in 1996-97. In Tillette's six years as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs, he was a key factor in Samford's 89-77 overall record and Atlantic Sun West Division titles. Tillette is widely respected in coaching circles for his teaching of the motion offense, which has been the cornerstone of the Bulldogs' offense.
