Tryout Packet 2015-2016 Dear Prospective Cheerleader, We look forward to seeing you at our cheerleading tryout clinic. The clinic dates are May 20th and May 21st from 5:30-8:30 p.m. for all prospective cheerleaders. You must attend both clinic days. If there is a school function that conflicts (e.g. 8th grade trip) you must notify the coach immediately. The closed tryouts are May 22nd, from 5:30 8:30 p.m. or until finished. The clinic instructors will teach all the needed skills to try out at Atherton High School. Final team selections will be made after the clinic has concluded. Posting date of team selections will be announced at clinic. During tryouts you will be taught a cheer and a dance. Your ability to execute motions, jumps, cheers, dance, stunting, and gymnastics (which are optional) while exhibiting a great attitude, wonderful facials, and willingness to work with others will need to be demonstrated throughout the tryout week. You may start signing in for the clinic 15 minutes before the designated start time each day. You must have all of the following papers turned in on the first day of the clinic. appropriate clothing must be worn at all cheerleading tryouts. JEWELRY OF ANY KIND WILL NOT BE ALLOWED. NO NAILS OF ANY KIND WILL BE ALLOWED. ALL ACRYLIC NAILS MUST NOT BE LONGER YOU RE YOUR FINGERTIPS FOR TRYOUTS. ONLY SHORT NATURAL LENGTH NAILS WILL BE ACCEPTED. THESE ARE SAFETY ISSUES. Please wear hair appropriately. It is important that you understand these guidelines so that you will be able to help your child carry out her duties if selected to be an Atherton Cheerleader. 1. Prospective cheerleaders must attend both days of the cheerleading clinic at Atherton High School. (Exception prior approval from coach before the start of clinic for school activity, e.g. 8th grade field trip, school concert, etc) 2. Number of cheerleaders that will be selected will be announced at clinic based on number of eligible candidates trying out. Tryouts will be closed. 3. Atherton Cheerleaders practice at least three days per week for two hours and a half hours over the summer unless otherwise notified. (This does not include time at a gym for gymnastics.) After cheerleaders have been selected, they will be given a list of rules which will explain acceptable behavior, cheerleading responsibilities, and other information. 4. Cheerleaders attend a minimum of one football game and two basketball games per week for AHS. These games are held at various locations in Jefferson County and surrounding counties, days will be announced. Cheerleaders are also expected to attend all tournaments and competitions that the teams are involved in. Please make note that there are tournaments/games/competitions that may be held during the Thanksgiving Holiday, Winter Holiday week, birthdays, etc. and we can have more than one game in a week for tournaments ALL cheerleaders are expected to attend. You will be notified in ample time of these tournaments and expectations.
5. During the year, there will be cheerleading competitions and other cheerleading functions that ALL team members must attend. THERE MAY BE EXTRA PRACTICE SESSIONS TO PREPARE FOR THESE EVENTS. 6. All uniforms are school property and will be issued from year to year. Cheerleaders will be required to replace lost or damaged equipment and uniforms. Cheerleaders are required to help fund raise for new uniforms, competition fees, signs, equipment, etc. 7. Cheerleaders are responsible for providing team approved personal items such as shoes, socks, hair bows, bloomers, body suits, shorts, t-shirts, etc. 8. Cheerleaders must meet all eligibility requirements for athletes including maintaining academic and conduct requirements. 9. Parents must agree to relieve the school, sponsor, and coaches of any responsibility or liability for accidents or injuries which might occur during the clinic, practices, games or other cheerleading activities. CHEERLEADERS MUST ABIDE BY THE RULES FOR CHEERLEADERS. WRITTEN RULES WILL BE DISTRIBUTED WHEN TEAM HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED. 11. Cheerleaders are required to provide their own transportation to practices, games, and gym, unless otherwise instructed by the coaches. Coaches are NOT responsible for providing transportation. Parents must be on time to pick up cheerleaders from cheerleading events/activities/games. PARENT MEETING AND FIRST CHEERLEADING PRACTICE WILL BE THE WEEK FOLLOWING CHEERLEADING TRYOUTS. Sideline cheer 10 pts (you will be taught this at clinic) Scoring will be based on timing, motion technique, voice, enthusiasm, ability to lead a crowd, and degree of perfection. Cheer 10 pts (you will be taught this at clinic) Scoring will be based on timing, motion technique, voice, enthusiasm, difficulty of incorporated skill, ability to lead a crowd, and degree of perfection. Dance 10 pts (you will be taught this at clinic) Scoring will be based on timing, motion technique, rhythm, enthusiasm, performance, and degree of perfection. Jumps 30 pts Toe Touch, Pike, and 3 Connected Jumps Scoring will be based on height, flexibility, difficulty of sequence, technique, variety of jumps, and degree of perfection. Stunts 20 pts YOU MAY NOT TRYOUT AS A FRONT SPOT. YOUR ABILITY TO DO MORE THAN ONE POSITION DURING EVAULATIONS WILL BE NOTED.. Bases and Backspots: Strength, technique, difficulty of stunt, and safety. Flyers: Flexibility, body position, difficulty of stunt, and technique. 1 3 pts: Prep Cradle 3 4 pts: Extension Cradle 5 6 pts: Lib Cradle 7 8 pts: 1 leg stunt with twist cradle 9-10 pts: Stunt sequence with more than a single stunt with twist cradle Overall Appeal 10 pts Scoring will be appearance, enthusiasm, voice, attitude, ability to work with others, and tryout performance. BONUS POINTS While gymnastics are not required this year they are strongly encouraged. You may perform two standing passes and two running passes to your ability.
