After a solid fall campaign, the University of Utah men s golf team enters the spring season looking to continue its recent success. The Utes return six members from the 2004-05 squad, which finished seventh at the MWC Championships and posted top-10 finishes in eight of the 13 tournaments they competed in last year. Each week we re getting better and better, comments head coach Randall McCracken. We still haven t peaked yet and when we do, it will be unbelievably good. The Utes finished in the top 10 in three of the five tournaments during the fall season, shooting under par in two of those outings. Utah is fielding a relatively young squad during the 2005-06 campaign. The Utes roster boasts two seniors, four sophomores and Sophomore Dustin Pimm looks to continue to lead the Utes in the spring campaign. three freshmen. Two of the rookies competed in the majority of Utah s fall tournaments. We have a solid group of sophomores, notes McCracken. We have two freshmen traveling and contributing for us as well, helping us get over the hump. It s a good sign when you can get that young of a group contributing. It just makes your future that much brighter. Sophomore Dustin Pimm looks to continue to lead the Utes in the spring. Pimm led the conference with a 70.27 average after the fall portion of the season. Pimm posted his first collegiate win at the Purple and Red Invitational after setting a tournament record with a 14-under 202. The sophomore was named MWC Golfer of the Month in September as well as Golfweek s Golfer of the Week after his performance at the Purple and Red Invitational. Dustin s hard work is beginning to pay off, says McCracken. He s become on of the best players in the conference and the nation. His great play has really inspired the rest of the team. It s a real bonus for us that he is only a sophomore. Steve Newren is the sole senior who has played in all five tournaments during the fall. Newren finished the fall campaign with a 73-stroke average to rank him tied for 14th in the conference entering the spring season. Steve has been very consistent this year, says McCracken. He s the type of player who will always give us a score the team can use. He won an event last year and I would not be surprised if he wins again this year. Sophomore Chris Gresh finished the fall season with a top-10 finish at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate and looks to continue his solid play for the Utes. Gresh competed in all five tournaments for Utah and finished the fall season with a 72.87-stroke average to rank 11th in the conference. Chris is consistently getting better, says Mc- Cracken. He has the potential to be a great player. He also has the potential to win and it won t be a big surprise when he does. Freshman Mike Branca jumped onto the collegiate scene early on, competing in all five tournaments during the fall. Branca averaged 75.67 strokes at the conclusion of the fall campaign, tying for 34th in the conference. UTE OUTLOOK He hopes to improve in the spring season. Fellow freshman Chance Cota earned a spot on the Utes traveling squad after his individual performance at the Purple and Red Invitational. Cota finished the fall season with a 75.17 average and was tied for 30th in the Mountain West Conference. Our freshmen are doing what is expected of them, says McCracken. We need them to contribute as a fourth or fifth scorer right now. But they have the potential to get better and make themselves great players. Overall, the Utes hope to improve on their previous conference tournament outcome. In the 2004-05, Utah placed seventh at the Mountain West tournament in a conference that annually boasts three or four teams in the top 25. It s difficult not to improve on last year s performance, says McCracken. Our goal is to be in the top three, something that is very possible if we continue to improve and do the things that we are doing. With Utah s success in the fall season, the spring season has the potential for even better things to come. Steve Newren is the sole senior who has played in all five tournaments during the fall portion of the season.

COACHES/ADMINISTRATION HEAD COACH RANDALL MCCRACKEN Coach Randall Mc- Cracken took over the reigns of the Ute golf team July 15, 2004. Entering his second season with the Utes, McCracken came to the U. from Utah Valley State College, where he had served as the head men s golf coach for two seasons. McCracken was also the golf teaching professional at Willow Creek Country Club. McCracken started his career as a golf instructor and the assistant golf professional at the Idaho Falls Country Club from 1994-95. His next stop was Destin, Fla., where he served as the director of instruction at Emerald Bay Resort from 1996-99. In 1998, McCracken began a four-year stint with Wine Golf, L.L.C. in Jacksonville, Fla. He was the vice president of Wine Golf from 1998-2001 and doubled as the director of instruction at the Mike Wine Golf Academy from 1999-2001. Since moving to Utah, McCracken has volunteered his time with several at-risk youth golf programs. He has also been the lead instructor for Project GAIN, a Salt Lake City/University of Utah-based program for teaching golf to persons with disabilities. The Eugene, Ore., native attended the University of Oregon, playing on its golf team from 1991-94. McCracken graduated from Oregon with a bachelor's degree in parks, recreation and tourism in 1995. McCracken captured 10 wins in professional golf tours throughout the Southeast from 1994-96 and played in numerous PGA section championships from 1997-2001. In 1999, he won the National PGA Assistants Championship and he was exempted into the second stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament in both 2000 and 2001, although he did not play. UTAH ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION DR. CHRIS HILL DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS DOUG ARCHIE AD/ COMPLIANCE STUDENT ASSISTANT COACH ASHDON WOODS Former Ute Ashdon Woods joins the team as an assistant coach, after finishing his collegiate playing career last year. Woods is in his first year as an assistant coach with the University of Utah golf program. The Lander, Wyo., native played all four years with the Utes, playing an integral part in the team s previous success. Woods led the Utes in six tournaments in 2004-05. Included among those marks was a top-10 finish at the Ron Moore Invitational. In 2003-04, Woods was the top Ute at the Mountain West Conference Tournament. He also won the Wyoming Amateur title in 2004. In 2002-03, Woods won his first Wyoming Amateur championship. He then played in four tournaments for Utah that fall and spring. Woods was the Wyoming high school individual champion in 1999 and 2001. He earned all-state honors from 1999-2001 at Lander Valley High School. Woods is finishing up work on his bachelor s degree in exercise and sport science. PETE OLISZCZAK AD/ INTERNAL OPERATIONS LIZ ABEL AD/SPORTS INFO. 2004-05/FALL 2005 REVIEW Utah sophomore Dustin Pimm was named the Mountain West Conference Men s Golfer of the Month for September. This marks the first conference award of his career, and the first Utah golfer to be tabbed by the conference since Ryan Ellis during the 2001 spring season, back when the award was given weekly. Pimm was ranked first in the conference and 64th in the nation after the Fall 2005 season. The sophomore leads the conference in stroke average (70.27) and overall strokes (1054). Pimm garnered national attention, being named Golfweek s Men s Player of the Week after his stellar performance at the Purple and Red Invitational held Sept. 19-20 at the Valley View Golf Course in Layton, Utah. Pimm s record-setting performance at the Purple and Red Invitational, where he claimed medalist honors with a 14-under 202, leads off his list of accomplishments during the month of September. Pimm s final round of 64 at the Purple and Red set a new course and tournament record, as well as a new career best. Pimm finished at par or better in seven of his nine rounds during the month of September. At the Wolf Pack Classic, the sophomore tied for fourth with a 7-under 209. Pimm s opening tournament of the year was the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, Sept. 10-11, where he finished tied for 12th with a 220. Pimm has paced the Utes in four of the five tournaments the team has competed in this year. 2005 FALL RESULTS Tournament/ Team Score/ Date Location Top Ute Finisher Top Ute Score Finish Sept. 10-11 Colorado Springs, Colo.
