2 GEORGIA STATE VOLLEYBALL Season Preview Following a year in which youth, injuries and one of the country s toughest non-conference schedules devastated the team, the Georgia State volleyball team will look to turn things around and return to the CAA Tournament for the first time in two years come November. Sixth-year head coach Mike Webster and his six returnees learned a lot last season. The squad had just three upperclassmen and the youth of the team could be seen on the court at times. However, with six talented newcomers, including several transfers with Division I experience, the Panthers are prepared to tackle a new year and make it a special one. The 2009 club returns four upperclassmen senior Jocelyn Waldern (photo right), along with juniors Rachel Boryc, Audrey Cantrell and Ashley Jones. Additionally, sophomores Muki Kangwa and Chelsea Perry return for their second seasons on the court. Webster s recruiting efforts netted the Panthers some major league talent who will immediately make an impact on the court this fall. Vineece Verdun and Nevena Peeva both transfer in from Division I programs, while Raquel Jones and Mirjam Pfyl also transfer in with collegiate experience. Jamiee Freeman and Vanessa Nagy round out the class as a pair of talented freshman who also should see significant time on the court this season. Outside Hitters/Right Side The Panthers have five outside hitters on the roster this season, giving the team a lot of depth and many different options. Coming off one of the most remarkable seasons in school history, junior Ashley Jones returns to the line-up. Jones scored a regular season nation-leading six triple-doubles last season, earning All-CAA Third Team honors. As a sophomore, Jones almost averaged a triple-double a match, stepping in as setter during the middle part of the season. Transfer Nevena Peeva will also add depth on the outside after helping lead Florida A&M to the NCAA Tournament last season. The native of Bulgaria will have three years of eligibility left when the season starts this fall. Also transferring in and playing on the outside is Mirjam Pfyl who played at Lindsey Wilson College last season. As a member of the NAIA school, Pfyl earned Midsouth Conference Freshman of the Year honors and was an NAIA All-American Honorable Mention. She led the Blue Raiders with 488 kills, a 4.14 kills per set average while also being named to the AVCA Southeast Region team. Freshman Jamiee Freeman and Vanessa Nagy will round out the outside hitters. Both were multi-sport stars in high school and will add a lot of athleticism to the team. Junior Rachel Boryc will once again anchor the right-side, with depth added by Jones and Nagy. Boryc finished last season with eight doubledoubles and scored a career and team high 45 assists against in-state rival Mercer. As a sophomore, Boryc was used as a multi-position player and had a stretch of four straight double-doubles in the middle of the season Middle Hitters Georgia State will once again have a deep group of middle hitters with a pair of returnees and two newcomers. Senior Jocelyn Waldern will be looked up to as the lone senior on the team. During her junior year, Waldern was among the top ten in the CAA in aces in conference only matches, leading the team in aces for the second straight season. She will be joined by sophomore Muki Kangwa who saw significant action the second half of the season. Kangwa played significant time in all but one of the team s final 17 matches while adjusting to collegiate volleyball The duo will be joined up the middle by Vineece Verdun, a transfer from Michigan State. Verdun spent two years as a member of the Spartans, redshirting her first season and will have three years of eligibility remaining. Verdun started 20 matches last season and finished the year with 102 kills and 47 total blocks. Also adding depth to the middle will be transfer Raquel Jones, who comes to the Panthers after a year at Hillsborough CC. However, Jones has Division I experience, playing a year at UT-Martin before transferring to the junior college. Jones was recruited by then Skyhawk assistant and current Panther assistant coach Ada Bazin. Jones blossomed during her sophomore season, finishing the season with 176 kills and a.295 hitting percentage. Setters Sophomore Chelsea Perry will continue where she finished the 2008 season in the starting rotation at setter. During her freshman year, Perry played the final ten matches of the year and averaged over 15 assists per match, scoring in double-figures all but once and set a career-high with 26 against UNC Wilmington. If there are any bumps in the road, Ashley Jones will be able to slide over and fill in nicely. Jones filled the role last season and split time at setter with Perry at the end of the season. During Jones sophomore campaign, she recorded 13 doubledigit assist matches over the final 17 matches of the year. 2009 Media Guide Libero Redshirt junior Audrey Cantrell took over the libero position toward the end of the 2007 season and did not give it up in 2008. Cantrell finished third in the CAA in digs, averaging 4.21 per set. She also earned all-tournament honors at the Georgia Bulldog Invitational and will looked to be a spark-plug for the team once again on and off the court Schedule Highlighting the 2009 schedule will be an early season trip to Chicago as well as hosting the Great 8 Volleyball Challenge after a year of not hosting a tournament. State will start the season as they did last season with four consecutive tournaments before getting into the heart of CAA play in early October. In conjunction with Kennesaw State, the Panthers will host the Great 8 Volleyball Challenge presented by Residence Inn Kennesaw, the second week of the season. The two-day tournament will take place on September 4th and 5th with the Sports Arena serving as the backdrop for half of the tournament, while Kennesaw State s Convocation Center serves as the second site. Georgia State will face North Carolina A&T in the Friday home opener, with Presbyterian and Louisiana Monroe to follow. The rest of the field that will also start play on Friday night includes Kennesaw State, Nicholls State, Rider and Alabama A&M. The teams will continue play on Saturday until a champion is determined. The Panthers will open the season just a weekend prior to the home opener at a tournament hosted by North Carolina Central. State will face The Citadel on August 28th to open the season. Later in the day, the Panthers will face the host Eagles, followed by matches against High Point and South Carolina State on Saturday. State will travel to Chicago the third weekend of the season for the University of Illinois-Chicago Invitational. After taking on the host Flames, State will face Michigan State and Duquesne on Saturday. Before traveling home, State will also face Chicago State. Tournament play will conclude on September 18th and 19th at the Elon University Invitational. The Panthers will face the Naval Academy, host Phoenix and Norfolk State in the two day event. The Panthers will once again play Kennesaw State and Mercer in nonconference action. Both matches will be on the road this season. The CAA opener will come on September 26th as UNC Wilmington travels to Atlanta. It will mark the first of 14 CAA matches, seven home and seven away. Other home contests this season will include: Northeastern, Hofstra, Towson, Delaware, VCU and William & Mary. Conference road contests this season will include: William & Mary, VCU, UNC Wilmington, James Madison, George Mason, Hofstra and Northeastern. The top four teams will qualify for the CAA Championship, November 20-22 at the site of the regular season champion.

Head Coach Mike Webster Maryland 1996 6th Season 4 Since becoming the sixth full-time head coach in the history of the program in February 2004, Mike Webster has continued the tradition of leading the Panther volleyball team to success on and off the court. In his first season at the helm, Webster guided State to a second-place tie in the Atlantic Sun Conference as the squad reached the conference semifinals after an opening-round win in the A-Sun Tournament. Ana Paul Ferriera, Robyn van Dam and Carol Mattos each earned A-Sun Player of the Week honors during the regular season. Robyn van Dam earned A- Sun All-Conference First Team honors, while April DeCoste was named to the second team and earned all-tournament honors following her play in the conference tournament. In his second year, Webster led the Panthers to a.500 record in league play during their first season in the Colonial Athletic Association. In 2005, State finished fifth in the CAA and earned a conference tournament berth for the 11thstraight season. Alex Blenche earned the team s first-ever CAA Player of the Week honor and was later named to the All-CAA First Team. In 2006, State struggled with injuries and narrowly missed the CAA Tournament after finishing tied for seventh in the league. Freshman Noelle Boyd was named to the All-CAA Rookie Team and also earned rookie of the week honors during the regular season. Five Panthers also earned CAA All-Academic honors. The Panthers opened 2007 by winning six of their first eight matches, as Webster registered his first winning season at the helm. The team started the season by winning the Georgia State Invitational and followed that up the following weekend by sweeping the Mean Green Classic hosted by North Texas. State finished the season with a 16-14 record and tied for seventh with a 6-8 record against an arduous CAA schedule. Amy Lusk was named to the All-CAA Third Team, while Ana Paula Ferriera earned her first CAA Player of the Week honors. Nine Panthers earned CAA All-Academic honors, a new volleyball team record. In 2008, Webster guided the youngest team in recent Panther history with only three upperclassmen. Sophomore Ashley Jones tied for first in the nation through the regular season with six triple-doubles, while also earning All-CAA Third Team honors. Jones was also honored as CAA Player of the Week and was listed as a CVU Top Performer on October 6th after her first pair of triple doubles. Freshman Torrie Brown won CAA Freshman of the Week honors after her play in the Georgia Bulldog Invitational, the same event that 2009 Media Guide Audrey Cantrell was named to the all-tournament team. Six members of the squad earned CAA All-Academic for their individual work in the classroom. Focus on the Complete Student-Athlete State s success on the court has been matched by its accomplishments off the court and in the community during Webster s tenure. In 2004-05, the squad won Georgia State s CHAMPS/Life Skills Cup. The award is given to the winning team in a year-long competition among all Georgia State teams that focuses on developing the individual, being an active role model, acting as a team, supporting other student-athletes and being involved in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. During the summer of 2005, the Panthers conducted volleyball clinics for underprivileged children in Sao Paulo, Brazil, while participating in a foreign tour and competing against local club teams. After Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in August 2005, the Panthers had a T-shirt sale during their regular-season home tournament and raised money for the American Red Cross. In addition to working in soup kitchens during the winter of 2005-06, State conducted a fundraiser during its 2006 spring tournament and raised over $700 for the Atlanta Two-Day Walk for Breast Cancer. Additionally, the team has hosted day-long clinics in the summer for inner-city children as part of the After-School All-Stars program since 2007. In 2008, the team hosted Swing for a Cure and raised over $1800 for breast cancer awareness. The team also hosted the Girl Scouts for a volleyball clinic prior to the start of the James Madison match. That same weekend, a crowd of over 400 from the Boys and Girls Club of Atlanta members cheered on the Panthers in a thrilling match against George Mason. Webster spent nine years as an assistant coach at four different universities before coming to State. He has brought a vast knowledge of the game to the court and is passionate about sharing this information with his student-athletes. His tireless work to improve his team has resulted in six players receiving all-conference accolades, one taking home conference all-tournament honors and four player of the week honors. Academics also play a key role in Webster s coaching philosophy. His emphasis on success in the classroom has resulted in 15 student-athletes earning conference all-academic honors a total of 25 times during his five seasons as

head coach, including a record nine following the 2007 season. Coaching Stops Webster s coaching career began in 1995 as a student assistant at Maryland, and was part of a Terps women s team that claimed a runner-up finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. In 1996, Webster moved to Ohio University as a volunteer assistant while working on a master s degree. He was promoted to second assistant coach in January 1997, and held that position through May 1999. While in Athens, he earned a master s in physical education - athletic administration in November 1998. He helped revive a program that had been dormant in years past, and has now won five straight Mid-American Conference regular-season titles. After leaving Ohio University, Webster began his first tour of duty in the Atlantic Sun Conference (then the Trans America Athletic Conference) as first assistant coach at the University of Central Florida. He helped the Golden Knights reach back-to-back conference championship matches during his two seasons under head coach Meg Colado. After two years in Orlando, Webster took a position as first assistant coach at the University of Connecticut. During his three seasons under UConn head coach Kelli Myers, the squad went 55-34, including a pair of 20-win seasons and two Big East Conference Tournament berths. In addition to his nine seasons as an assistant on the Division I level, Webster served as a head coach of numerous club teams dating back to 1994. Some of his head coaching stints were with the New England Region High Performance Team (Junior Division) and the Husky Juniors Volleyball Club (18-Under Juniors). A member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association since 1997, Webster has received Level I and Level II accreditation through the USA Volleyball Coaching Accreditation Program. In 1996, he became an author when his article The Ups and Downs of a Non-Traditional Hitting Approach: Is Change Necessary? was published in the May/June 1996 edition of Coaching Volleyball. All-American Player Webster s collegiate volleyball career began at the University of Maryland in 1991, immediately stepping in as the starting setter for the men s club team. Webster earned MVP honors in 1993 and 1994 in the club tournament for the ACC teams, along with First-Team honors from that group from 1993-95. He also brought home Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association First Team honors in 1994 and 1995, as well as Collegiate Club Nationals All-American status in those same years. Family Man Born on Oct. 31, 1973, in Silver Spring, Md., Michael John Webster is married to the former Shannon Saltzman. Their partnership extends to the court, where Shannon has served as a volunteer assistant 2004 to 2008. The couple resides in Norcross and welcomed a son, Samuel Calvin, on Oct. 19, 2007. Assistant Coach Ada Bazin Florida 2002 2nd Season Support Staff Ada Bazin is entering her second season as the Panthers assistant coach, but came to campus in January of 2008. She came to Georgia State after spending two seasons at the University of Tennessee at Martin. Bazin overseas all parts of the teams recruiting and travel schedules, while coordinating fundraiser and community involvement activities. Beth Van Fleet and Samantha Walker became the first two players in school history to record 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. In 2007, Ana Paula Ferreira became the third Panther to join that elite club. However, two other players who completed their careers wearing the Blue & White also registered over 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. During the 2003 season, Shelbylynn McBride (a transfer from George Mason University) joined the exclusive club. In 2006, Amy Lusk (a transfer from Missouri State University-West Plains) also accomplished the career feat, but not all at Georgia State. In 2004, two former Georgia State volleyball players were given the highest honor the team can bestow upon them: a Banner of Honor. Sarah-Jane Mungo and Anna Popenko received this special recognition on Oct. 9, 2004, during a pre-match ceremony. Popenko and Mungo are the first two former players to be given this special recognition. Mungo holds most of Georgia State s single-season attacking and blocking records, while Popenko led Georgia State to its only NCAA Tournament appearance in 2000. Banner of Honor From left: 2004 team captain April DeCoste, former Senior Woman Administrator Carol Cohen, former head coach Martha Bullard-Staples, Anna Popenko, former head coach Dr. Richard Leonard and coach Mike Webster following the ceremony. NOTE: Mungo was in her home country of Trinidad & Tobago and unable to attend the ceremony. 2009 Media Guide 25

Last season, Northeastern won the regular season title, but Delaware earned its second straight CAA Tournament title to advance to the NCAA Tournament. This season, the top four seeds will qualify for a shot at the championship. Last season, the second to sixth place teams were separated by just two games, so the excitement should be even more exciting this season as teams compete for just four spots as compared to six last season.
