IRISH JUDO ASSOCIATION GRADING SYSTEM FOR MON GRADES INSTRUCTIONS TO CLUB GRADERS Grading System for Mon Grades 1 to 12 1. Skipping of grades is not permitted * see exception. 2. No contest required but judoka, as well as passing the theory, must show good ability in randori for both tachi waza and ne waza. 3. There must be a minimum of three months between promotions. 4. Beginners under 12 years can go straight to white /yellow (2nd Mon) but thereafter can only proceed one grade at a time. 5. Normally children under 8 years will have a separate grading system which the club coach can use but a 7 year old with at least a years experience can grade under the Mon system at the coaches discretion. Please note that although strangles and arm locks are included in the junior mon syllabus, they should be taught under strict supervision and at the discretion of the club coach Ukemi (breakfalls) is a very important part of judo and should be taught to children as soon as possible 6. When a judoka reaches their 16th year they transfer to the senior KYU system keeping the same colour belt e.g. a junior green belt will be a senior green (3rd KYU) and at the next grading can fight for promotion to senior blue (2nd KYU). 7. In the case of a junior brown (12th Mon) at age 16, they can fight in the senior grading against blue belts (2nd KYU) and if they win the required two fights and pass the theory exam they will be promoted to senior brown (1st KYU). 8. The club grader is responsible for accounting to the office with correctly completed grading forms and fees within two weeks of the grading. All licence books must be checked for valid IJA membership before Grading commences 9. Only registered club graders can sign the appropriate grade in the licence books. 10. WHITE BELT 1 st MON A judoka is deemed to be a White belt 1 st Mon when they have applied for an Irish Judo Association licence. They will then prepare for their first examination for promotion to White /Yellow 2 nd Mon WHITE/YELLOW BELT 2 nd MON A beginner of 12 years or more can be promoted to Yellow belt 3 rd Mon at the Club Graders discretion as long as they have satisfied all the requirements for 2 nd Mon and 3 rd Mon. This is the only exception to the rule and Mon grades are not allowed to be promoted more than one grade each time.
