SMLPSA ON TARGET NEWS September/October 2017 September/October Volume Six Hello SMLPSA Membership, Man, time is sure going by quickly! Seemed like summer came and went this year faster than normal (at least for me); and, after a lot of activities and projects (Honey Do List), My wife and I had only a five day vacation this year during Memorial Day, (and that went by too quickly). So here we are, the first day of November preparing for the Holiday Season. First, let me say thank you again to Paul Giammattei, Tracy Scheffling, Ed Groeber and all who make the Monday Night Men s and Woman s Shooting Event a success. Attendance has dropped a little this year but as the holidays pass and the Winter months set in, I hope more and more members will go to the range and enjoy this fun night of Club Shooting. Bring a friend or a family member. Introduce them to our Club and the beautiful range we have to offer. This year with a cooperative effort between a Roanoke Rifle and Revolver Club Member and our Club, we hope to add some fun competition, and new aspects of shooting indoors that will not only challenge shooters, but hone their shooting skills. We have a great supply of ammo on hand, so all you need to do is show up. Targets, and ammo are for sale at low prices, and we supply backers, hearing and eye protection as well. We are still in the process of trying to get the 4-H Management, to allow us to offer expanded shooting beyond typical pistol. Our proposal is that we allow members to shoot the same firearms as law enforcement using the same safety parameters to oversee those activities. That would include.223/5.56 Caliber AR-15 Pistols and Rifles, as well as any gauge of Shotgun (using only buckshot or slugs), and any carbine or rifle shooting a straight wall caliber round less than 50 Cal. So if you have a Henry Rifle chambered in 45-70, or 30-30, those are already allowed to use at the range. THE MAJOR restriction for all the rifles (except 22LR) will be that targets are set at 50 feet and beyond. For shotguns, it will be 30 feet and 1
beyond. We ask everyone when shooting rifles, carbines, or shotguns, to place your targets as low as possible on the target backer, to eliminate any deflections off of the Range Target System mounting brackets. We don t want any rounds to split or deflect and return into the room. Also, as always, NO HOLLOW POINT, or high penetration rounds like steel center or tipped rounds. These do not mushroom and will more than like damage the equipment of facility if they strike something other than the target. I would also like to point out that even though we MAY be expanding the types of firearms we are able to shoot, the basic range rules must be STRICTLY FOLLOWED to include having only one weapon out at a time to shoot, having that weapon pointed down range at all times on safety, and ONLY loading that weapon in the booth. If we are allowed to shoot both AR15 style rifles and shotguns in the near future, I will announce that change after we have approval from 4-H Management, and we have trained the Range Safety Officers in the use of such firearms. It will be also necessary for ANYONE who brings one of those style firearms to review the new safety procedures for those guns. We will designated specific times and days to shoot the AR15 s because the report (muzzle blast) from those firearms is much louder than a pistol, and we want to keep the activity limited to those guns during that session. That way people will know they will most likely need to use DOUBLE hearing protection (i.e. ear plugs and ear muffs simultaneously) to protect their hearing from the high decibel sounds. I personally oversee the Law Enforcement training when the AR s and Shotguns are being used and it gets very very loud inside the Range. I would also like to announce that we will be holding another Advanced Tactical Training Session on Saturday 11/18/17. Cost for this class is $50 for 3 hours of class room and live fire (1.5 hours each). If you are interested in taking this class, please call Peter at 400-1070 or email me at themayorofsml@yahoo.com The class will be held from 12 Noon to 3Pm on that day. Rain or shine! I would also like to bring to your attention that SMLPSA offers Gift Certificates to members for the purpose of giving away a membership to our Club, or purchasing a firearm. As you know we can order just about any make and model firearm at Dealer Cost, and only add a $35 Club Fee and Sales Tax to the amount. That is a great deal for anyone looking to purchase a gun as a gift or for themselves. Presently, we have (3) guns left in the Club inventory for sale to members at a great price and will list those on this newsletter, and also point out that we can get bulk ammo for Club Members to give as a gift as well. If your Spouse likes to shoot, we can get Remanufactured Ammo at a very low price. Lastly I would like to point out that next Tuesday, November 7 th, 2017 is Election Day. Please get out and exercise your Constitutional Rights, and vote for the Candidate that best represents your values, and protects your rights as a free citizen. That is what makes this Country great! This month we look forward to the Thanksgiving Holiday, and want to wish everyone safe and happy travels throughout the Holiday Season. Regards, Peter A Fisette President 2

If you are interested in ANY of the above firearms, call Peter @ 540-400-1070 Lastly, I would like to let everyone know about TWO major new scams going on to steal your identity. The first is getting a call on your cell phone from a number which looks exactly like your own cell number except the digits a mixed up slightly. I happened to me. I got a call from 540-400-0107. My actual number is 540-400-1070. The callers leave a recorded message, usually of you owing money, or a notice of default, and demand payment by a credit card or gift card. If you get a call like this HANG UP OR DON T ANSWER IT! The other scam which also happened to me and is much more dangerous, is thieves are now walking around with RFID Chip Readers in their pockets. The can grab ALL of your Credit Card information, by simply walking within a foot of you. They could use the ploy of bumping into you and within seconds, they have read all your card data from the RFID chip imbedded in your cards. They then take that info, and write it to the magnetic strip on the back of one of their own credit cards. This allows them to present a valid ID with the CC, but when the charge is run, it gets billed to YOUR ACCOUNT instead! Very slick and very damaging. The best protection is to get the new wallets with the RFID blocking features, and make sure when in line at a check out, you give yourself ample space away from others in line by putting your shopping cart behind you. That gap will give you the protection you need from these RFID readers. During the holidays, these scammers and thieves are out in full force and they cost Americans over $7 Billion dollars a year. We all pay for that in higher CC fees. 5
