Talking Turkey The Pitt County Wildlife Club Newsletter April 2016 1 Welcome to the April edition of Talking Turkey. Please take a moment to read our newsletter and stay informed of the various events and opportunities awaiting you at the club this month. Membership Meeting 7:00 PM, Thursday, April 21 The April General Membership Meeting will have a presentation by Amanda Watkins and the Northside FFA on "Sunday Hunting." This will be a performance event. Dinner will be served starting at 7:00 PM and will be catered by Confection Connection. Come out and experience the fun and fellowship of the Pitt County Wildlife Club! Field Notes From Club President, Lee Grubb We have had another great month out at the Pitt County Wildlife Club. I would like to highlight some of the activities that took place in March. Members Brady Davis and Jim Marsal hosted a great three-day defensive pistol class. Over 20 members participated. Everyone had a blast and we all learned a great deal as well. Kim Tavasso and Joe Cavanaugh hosted another successful Youth Day, and Rick Dean and the USPSA club member crew hosted another record breaking match. We have also had members of the East Carolina University ROTC program out on the new ranges to practice their marksmanship skills. They will be here again on the 23 rd in the later afternoon to qualify for the German Proficiency Badge that may be worn by allied military forces. Thanks again to all of the volunteers at the Pitt County Wildlife club and thanks to all the members who have been coming out for fun and fellowship. I look forward to seeing you at the range and if I can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me at grubb3g@gmail.com or (252) 367-1373. In Memoriam: We are sad to report the loss of another member of the club. Roy Van Dyne passed away on March 14 th and joined his former Submariner Shipmates on Eternal Patrol. Roy s military career spanned more than 24 years and he loved to travel, spend time with family and shoot at the range. There will be a Celebration of Roy s Life at his favorite restaurant, the Ne er-do-well Restaurant (901 Carolina Ave/Business Hwy 17, Washington NC 27889), on 9 April 2016, starting at 1:00 PM. Please bring your memories, photos and memorabilia to share. Casual attire, please. http://www.thewashingtondailynews.com/2016/03/18/leroy-roy-thomas-van-dyne/ 1

Defensive Pistol Training Class A Success! On March 7-9, 2016, the PCWC hosted a Defensive Pistol Class for club members instructed by Jim Marsal and Brady Davis. Below on the following page is a group picture of that class. Thanks to Norm Collins for the wonderful photo. 2 From left to right: Jim Marsal (Instructor), Norm Collins, Justin Smith, Jake Arnold, Susan Wiggins, Fred Farrell, Jim Bongo, Tom Horner, Bob Peaden, Marcus Jeanette, Kevin Butler, Lee Grubb, Mark Pilato, Joe McMillan, Luke McMillan, David Holder, Ian McMillan, Joe Cavanaugh, Steve Cerutti, Kathryn Morton, Brady Davis (Instructor) Defensive Carbine Class On May 9-11, 2016, Brady Davis and Jim Marsal will conduct a Defensive Carbine Class for club members. The class will cover the proper use, operation, maintenance, ballistics of the 5.56mm/300 AAC cartridges, zeroing, set-ups, for the AR15 rifle. Students will learn how to effectively use the AR15 rifle in a defensive situation, as well as transition to their handgun. Interested members will need the following: a reliable AR15 rifle, proper sling that easily allows transitions to the pistol, reliable pistol with holster, (5) magazines for each, 1,000 rounds of rifle and 250 rounds of pistol ammunition, with an open mind. This class will require students to be able to control and hold a rifle up, shoot, move, get into and out of various positions such as prone and kneeling, as well as be able to stand for long periods of time. This is an 2

active class and members will need to be in the physical shape to complete it. Though this training will help, it's not a USPSA/Multi-Gun improvement course. 3 Due to the limited time available, members must have already completed one our Defensive Pistol Classes, or the equivalent pistol class at Gunsite, Thunder Ranch or Blackwater. Class space is limited to the first 20 members that pay the $175.00 tuition. Please contact Jim Marsal at marsal2424@hotmail.com or 252-378- 5184, for registration, payment and for any questions on the specific training, equipment, or listed requirements. Send your payment/checks, made out to Jim Marsal, to 1897 Manor Court, Greenville, N.C. 27858. Work Day Work Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 16, 8:00 AM. Activities will include cleaning the club house; regular work around the property; replacing backer boards; general grounds cleanup, and roadway trash pickup. Remember to sign-in when you arrive and pick-up your workday voucher before you leave. This month s workday coordinator will be Mindy Waugh. Please also bring some blaze orange caps and vests for work along the river signage as turkey season is in. Club Ammo Sale The Pitt County Wildlife Club has acquired more.30-06 surplus ammo through the Civilian Marksmanship Program. This ammo will be sold at our club meeting on Thursday, April 21. This ammo is Greek military surplus. It is boxer primed, non-corrosive, and brass cased M2 ball surplus. There are mixed dates on the cans. Cans are approximately 200 rounds each, usually a couple over. Price is $130 per can. Sales will only be to PCWC club members. Special Instruction for Beginning or New Shooters On the first Sunday of each month, beginning at 2:00 PM, special instruction for new shooters will be offered at the club. Bring your bagged, unloaded handgun to Range 4; if you do not have a handgun don't worry, we will furnish firearms. Please call Rick Brixon at (252) 752-1256 if you plan to attend. This is a free service open to the public. Please bring factory ammunition for whatever caliber firearm you are bringing or are interested in shooting. Usually we provide handguns chambered in.22lr,.380, 38 special, 9mm, and 45acp. Handguns provided include a mix of revolvers and semi automatic pistols. NRA Certified Range Officers and Pistol Instructors will be on hand to assist at all levels. A great opportunity to improve your handgun techniques! Safety First At PCWC, we allow members to carry concealed and open carry firearms while at the club. Along with this privilege comes personal responsibility. If you either conceal or open carry a loaded handgun on club property, keep the firearm holstered unless (1) using it for personal defense or (2) on a hot firing line. REMEMBER, a holstered firearm is a safe firearm! Loaded handguns should only be unholstered or handled at the firing line. Unloaded handguns may be unholstered, holstered, or handled at either a firing line or one of the four (4) marked Safety Areas on the club grounds. Do not handle unholstered handguns at your personal vehicle. No handling of ammunition (including snap-caps) is allowed in the designated Safety Areas. 3

4 Special Reminder Membership and Guest Badges Please make sure that you and your guests prominently display membership and guest badges at all times when you are on the club grounds. The badges are needed to help us identify members and guests alike to ensure that all persons on the club grounds are members or guests. In addition, if you bring a guest to the club, please make sure you both complete the liability waiver form located in the box on Range 7 when signing in your guest(s). A Clean Range is a Happy Range Properly dispose of all trash. Please do not fill the trashcans with large items such as cardboard targets, boxes, large plastic containers, etc., and do not put cardboard targets under the trashcans. If the trashcans are full or if you have generated a large amount of trash, please make a trip to our red dumpster located in the main parking lot.
