PARENT S NIGHT OUT FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 BLACK FRIDAY PARENT S DAY OUT FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27 6:30-9PM Need a night out on the town? Bring your kids to our Parent s Night Out event so that you can enjoy a worry-free evening. Your kids will chose between activities such as gym time, crafts, a movie and pool time. For ages 5-13. MEMBERS: FREE NON-MEMBERS: $5 per child 8AM - 1PM Bring your kids to our Parent s Day Out event while you go out and shop for those Black Friday deals! Your kids will have gym time, watch a movie, eat pizza, and hang out. LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED. For ages 5-13. *MEMBERS: $30 per child *NON-MEMBERS: $60 per child *There will be a $2 per minute per child late fee charged if a child is not picked up by 1PM. HALLOWEEN PARTY FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30 6-8PM Costume parade, treats, music and games! Our Halloween Party is sure to be a fun, family-friendly event to celebrate the holiday. Bring your costumes and come bob of apples, walk a cake walk, and participate in our costume contest and other fun games. All ages and families welcome! MEMBERS: FREE NON-MEMBERS: $5 per child THE GREAT PUMPKIN SPLASH FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23 6PM - 8:30PM Some people think it s cool to swim with dolphins. Well, we think it s cool to swim with pumpkins! We are bringing the pumpkin patch to the Pittston Y swimming pool. October 23rd is Pumpkin Splash Night. Join us at the Y for bobbing for pumpkins, family swim, pumpkin decorating and a snack. Children 12 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult. All children 3 and under must have an adult in the pool with them. ALL PARTICIPANTS WHO ARE PICKING A PUMPKIN MUST REGISTER. family programming FALL I IMAGINATION STORY TIME MONDAYS 6-6:30PM AGES 3-5 Escape the day-to-day routine and explore the world of fantasy and adventure each week with our imagination story time class. Children will read a new story each week and participate in a craft or activity related to the story. MEMBER: $20 NON-MEMBER: $45 BASKETBALL MONDAYS 6-7PM AGES 6-10 Dribbling, passing, shooting and defense. Come learn the fundamentals of playing basketball in a fun and noncompetitive environment. MESSY ART TUESDAYS 6:15-6:45PM AGES 2-5 Your little ones will enjoy getting messy with finger paints, pudding and watercolors and you don t have to worry about the cleanup! PLEASE DRESS YOUR CHILDREN IN OLD CLOTHES, they will get messy! Parent/ guardian participation is REQUIRED! A material fee of $5 included in price. FAMILY MEMBER: $5 MEMBER: $25 NON-MEMBER: $45 COMIC BOOK ART TUESDAYS 7-8PM AGES 7-14 Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman and the Hulk all began on a comic book page. Learn how to create your own characters and stories inside your own comic book universe by participating in this thrilling art class. A material fee of $5 included in price. FAMILY MEMBER: $5 KARATE Learn the skills of Karate, Jitsu and Judo taught by our highly qualified instructor. A great class for teaching your child discipline, strength and focus. AGES 5-7 -> Tuesdays 5-6PM -OR- Thursdays 5-6PM AGES 8-12 -> Tuesdays 6-7PM -OR- Thursdays 6-7PM PARENT & ME TUMBLING WEDNESDAYS 4:30-5:30PM AGES 2-4 Learn the basic fundamentals of tumbling with friends. Children will develop flexibility and poise while also learning to work together in a group. Parents will assist children as they learn new exercises. LITTLE TUMBLERS WEDNESDAYS 5:30-6:30PM AGES 4-6 Learn the basic fundamentals of gymnastics with friends. Children will develop flexibility and poise while also learning to work together in a group. TUMBLING Introductory to tumbling positions, drills and movements such as tuck, straddle, bridge, handstand, forward roll, cartwheel, round off and back handspring along with some strengthening and flexibility. More advanced students will begin to develop a basic comprehension of a standing back handspring, basic air tumbling, front walks and aerials. AGES 6-8 Fridays 5-6PM AGES 8-10 Fridays 6-7PM ART SAMPLER WEDNESDAYS 6:45-7:30PM AGES 6-12 Drawing, coloring, painting, sculpting, origami...the possibilities are endless. Art Sampler gives children an opportunity to create personal art projects under the guidance of an experienced art teacher. A material fee of $5 included in price. FAMILY MEMBER: $5 ADULT BASKETBALL WEDNESDAYS 7:30-9PM AGES 15+ Looking for a time and place each week to paly a full-court game of basketball? Each Wednesday we will reserve the basketball gym for open play for adults. Register at the front desk to reserve your spot. Bring a non-member friend for a fee of $6 to play in open gym. MEMBER: FREE NON-MEMBER: $48 GUEST FEE: $6 per person/night INTRO TO CERAMICS THURSDAYS 6:30-7:30PM AGES 7-12 Let your creativity thrive! Intro to Ceramics offers students an opportunity to explore their creative side by sculpting and building with clay. Our kiln will solidify each beautiful project for you to take home and admire for years to come. Materials fee of $10 included in price. FAMILY MEMBER: $10 ADVANCED HIP-HOP FRIDAYS 5-6PM AGES 7-12 Styles of Jazz, Modern, African and hip hop are incorporated into this upbeat class. The focus is on developing alignment, technique and rhythmic awareness. This class is for our more advanced students who want to develop their skills. LITTLE BALLERINAS/IMAGINATION SATURDAYS 11-12PM AGES 2-4 Learn the basic foundation of ballet with friends then mix it up and let your imagination loose in guided and fun dance activities! Children will develop flexibility and poise while also learning to work together. MEMBER: $30 NON-MEMBER: $60 BALLET SATURDAYS 12-1PM AGES 5-8 Learn the basic fundamentals of ballet with friends. Children will develop flexibility and poise while also learn to work together in a group. Participants in this class will perform what they have learned in a show for parents and guests in early spring. MEMBER: $30 NON-MEMBER: $60 SPORTS FUNDAMENTALS SATURDAYS 10-11AM AGES 7-12 Practice the basic skills that will set you apart as a multiple-sport athlete. Children will focus on a different sport each week and will learn the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, scoring, and defense for sports like basketball, soccer, football, Frisbee, tennis and volleyball. MEMBER: $30 NON-MEMBER: $60 GYM GAMES SATURDAYS 9-10AM AGES 4-6 Looking for some fun Saturday-morning activities? Gym games is an hour -long activity each Saturday morning where children will participate in fun, active games such as parachute, jump rope, obstacle course, relay race, and sports. Each class will consist of one organized activity by a PE -certified teacher and 30 minutes of supervised free-play. MEMBER: $30 NON-MEMBER: $60 PARENT & ME PLAYGROUP WEDNESDAYS 10-12PM ALL AGES WELCOME Meet up with friends in the gym for singing time, a craft, a snack and play time! Participants in this class will perform what they have learned in a show for parents and guests in early spring. SPORTS FUNDAMENTALS SATURDAYS 10-11AM AGES 7-12 Practice the basic skills that will set you apart as a multiple-sport athlete. Children will focus on a different sport each week and will learn the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, scoring, and defense for sports like basketball, soccer, football, Frisbee, tennis and volleyball. GYM GAMES SATURDAYS 9-10AM AGES 4-6 Looking for some fun Saturday-morning activities? Gym games is an hour-long activity each Saturday morning where children will participate in fun, active games such as parachute, jump rope, obstacle course, relay race, and sports. Each class will consist of one organized activity by a PE-certified teacher and 30 minutes of supervised free-play. SWIMMING LESSONS BUBBLE BABIES 6 months through 36 months - with adult the primary objective of the Bubble Babies classes is to get both the parent and child comfortable in the water. Under the guidance of an instructor the class will help prepare the child for the preschool level classes and have fun. The child will be exposed to games that use basic movements, such as kicking, arm strokes and breath control. Activities are based on the developmental abilities of the child. One parent or guardian must attend the class and swim with the participant. 2 ½ YEAR OLD CLASS 30 months - 3 years old Is your child ready to swim without a parent or guardian (minimum age of 30 months required) or are pre-school age and have never been in a swim class? Water adjustment, basic stroke development and personal rescue skills are all introduced in this class. Parent must remain on the pool deck during the 30- minute instructional period of the class. The parent/guardian gets in the water and swims with child for the last 15 minutes to reinforce skills covered by the instructor during class. PRESCHOOL INSTRUCTIONAL SWIMMING CLASSES (AGE 3-5) PIKE This beginner level class helps children develop safe pool behavior, adjust to the water, and develop independent movement. Children will learn the basic paddle stroke and kicking with the use of personal floatation devices. They will also become comfortable holding their faces in the water while blowing bubbles and swimming. EEL This advanced beginner class is for children who are comfortable in the water. They are taught to kick, float, and perform a simple paddle stroke. Children can swim across the width of the pool without assistance by the end of this level. RAY Children begin to build endurance while improving their strokes and skills. They learn to swim on their front and back, tread water and perform diving skills. Children can swim the width of the pool on their front and back without assistance by the end of this level. STARFISH Children at this level refine their strokes while reviewing previously learned skills. They also learn underwater swimming skills. Children can swim a length of the pool on their front and back without assistance by the end of this level. YOUTH INSTRUCTIONAL SWIMMING CLASSES (AGE 6-14) POLLIWOG Beginning level for school-age children. No prior swimming experience necessary. Students are introduced to basic stroke development, personal safety skills, water sports and games in a friendly environment with peers. GUPPY This class is designed for students who have completed the Polliwog. Children will continue to improve their freestyle and backstrokes. They will be introduced to deep water swimming skills including personal safety in deep water, diving and treading water. Children will also learn rotary breathing, and will be introduced to breaststroke and butterfly. MINNOW The Minnow level is designed for students who have completed either the Guppy or Starfish level. This class will continue to introduce students to diving, treading water, increased distance for freestyle and backstroke, as well as deep water swimming skills. It will introduce lap-swimming techniques to students and will focus on stroke refinement and endurance. FISH Students continue to focus on lap swimming skills, stroke refinement and endurance. They will continue to learn about water sports and games, increase distance of freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke, personal safety and basic rescue skills. FLYING FISH Flying Fish students continue to perfect lap swimming techniques and focus on stroke refinement of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and increase distance of butterfly. They will continue learning basic rescue skills such as throwing assists and rescue breathing. SWIM LESSON REFUND/CREDIT POLICY To insure proper swimmer-to-instructor ratios for each class, we are unable to permit make-ups. Makeups are not available due to space limitations and program design. To keep our class fees as low as possible, we will not be able to issue credits or make-ups for missed classes. Class credits may be issued at the discretion of the Aquatic Department if accompanied by a physician s note that the participant was not able to participate in a scheduled class. SPECIAL AQUATIC PROGRAMMING HOMESCHOOL SWIM PROGRAM The best way to protect your children in and around the water is to teach them how to swim. In addition to teaching water safety, our Homeschool Swim Lessons cultivate self-esteem, encourage character development and offer long-term fitness benefits. Participants are grouped by ability depending on the number of participants. The Greater Pittston YMCA is pleased to announce that we are now associated with the Wilkes-Barre YMCA Dolphin Swim Team and you can join that team locally in Pittston. We will have a dedicated coach and three practices at the Pittston Y as well as one shared practice with the full team at the Wilkes-Barre Y. This is a wonderful opportunity for our swimmers to be part of a larger team and swim in a Y league. To be eligible for swim team participant must be able to swim one length of the pool (25 yards) with a recognizable swimming stroke. Season will run October through February/March with the meets beginning in mid November; most of the meets are held on Saturday s.
