UGA HEAD COACH: MANUEL DIAZ One of the nation s elite coaches, Manuel Diaz has Georgia contending for more championship hardware in 2009. Diaz led the Bulldogs to their second consecutive NCAA Championship in 2008. The sixth NCAA team championship title in school history, Diaz has accounted for four of them as the head coach (1999, 2001, 2007, 08). He was also an assistant coach under Dan Magill on both of the other winning squads (1985, 87). Diaz is currently the only active head coach to win multiple NCAA championships. Diaz holds an impressive career record of 485-99 (.830) in this his 21st season. In addition to his four NCAA Championships, his teams have reached the NCAA finals seven other times: 1989, 1991, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2006. Since 2006, Diaz has coached his teams to a combined 111-7 record that includes an undefeated 32-0 National Championship season in 2007. Georgia was also 30-1 in 2006, with its lone loss coming in the NCAA Finals. The Bulldogs are currently in the midst of a 60-match winning streak at home, having not succumbed to an opponent at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in more than four calendar years. Georgia s last home loss came on April 23, 2005. Diaz led Georgia to 11 consecutive national top-five finishes from 1989 to 99, a feat no other school in the country can match. In Diaz s first 20 years at the helm, his squads have averaged a final national rank of 4.8, tied with Stanford as the top-ranking program over that time period. We fought through it and beat a good Clemson team. I thought Nate did a great job at No. 1 singles and Jamie reacted well to the pressure at No. 2. Everyone made adjustments, and I thought Bora and Nate played well together in their first match as a team. We were able to win the doubles point and that was important. Also, Josh came through too. After Washington won the doubles point, we knew what we had to do and everybody hung in there. Josh is a perfect example of a kid who came to Georgia to be a part of something special. He didn t come in with a high international ranking like some guys, he s worked hard and gone from being like our eighth or ninth guy as a freshman to now winning big matches like today. At one point, we were down 4-2 at No. 1 and 4-1 at No. 3. Then, there was a point where Jamie (Hunt) stuck his racket up at the net on a great point with Steve Johnson as they were going back and forth, their rackets must have been eight inches apart, and it went for a winner. From that point on, we broke serve in both matches and ended up winning the doubles. #3 Georgia 4, #11 Stanford 2 Feb. 15, 2009 in Chicago, Ill. It s a credit to all the hard work the guys have put in this season. We won a phenomenal doubles point, the play at number one was the best I have seen in a long time. Nate won a big singles match. A lot of the experts said we might be in for a down year but we showed we can compete with anybody in the country. I m not saying it s going to be smooth this year but we definitely have the kind of guys who will fight hard every time out. We re ahead of schedule, and I like how we ve got a close-knit group. BLOCK PARTY ANOTHER HIT For the second year in a row, the Georgia men s and women s tennis teams in cooperation with the Clarke-Oconee Tennis Association held a free swinging bash at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. On March 23rd, a total of more than 125 kids ranging from kindergarteners through eighth graders participated in tennis games and activities for a couple of hours and then had pizza and refreshments. The USTA recognized last year s Block Party as the best special event in the state that promoted tennis to its community and made a positive impact on the local tennis programs. The event was credited in part for almost doubling participation in the local junior tennis program.
