Despite outshooting Lindenwood, 43-12, in the opener, the Nittany Lions fell 1-0. The series finale saw Penn State capture a 6-0 victory over Lindenwood. In Penn State s 6-0 win, Natalie Heising tallied the seventh hat trick in program history, and became the second Nittany Lion freshman to record a hat trick. Along with Heising, Amanda McLeod, Meike Meilleur, and Sophie Slattery each scored a goal, while defenseman Katie McMillan chipped in a career-best three-assist game. In net on the weekend, senior Hannah Ehresmann started both contests and tallied a shutout victory in the series finale. Also in net, freshman Chantal Burke took over prior to the start of the second period in the opener and closed out the game for her third career appearance. LOOKING AT LINDENWOOD The Lindenwood Lions finished the regular season with an overall record of 10-19-1 and a CHA record of 8-12-0. Offensively, six Lions have tallied at least 14 points on the year. For the Lions, Taylor Girard leads the team in goals (13) and points (24), while Courtney Ganske leads the team in assists (18). In net this season for Lindenwood, Jolene debruyn has started 25 of 30 games. On the year, debruyn has a record of 9-14-1, has three solo shutouts to her name, has a save percentage of.926, has a goalsagainst average of 2.52, and has made 768 saves. SERIES HISTORY VS. LINDENWOOD Penn State leads the all-time series against Lindenwood, 12-11-3. Last weekend, Lindenwood topped Penn State, 1-0, before the Nittany Lions captured a 6-0 victory in the series finale. The two teams split each series during the regular season in 2017-18. IMMEDIATE IMPACT With the 2017-18 regular season complete, the duo of Natalie Heising and Katie Rankin made their impact felt among the freshmen in the College Hockey America conference. Among freshmen in the CHA, Heising is first in shots (125), goals (17), points (26), power play goals (10), power play points (15), and is tied for first in power play assists (five). Heising is also tied for fourth in assists (nine) and ranks fifth in faceoff wins (148). Along with Heising, Rankin is first in faceoff wins (450), tied for second in assists (10), third in shots (89), tied for third in points (17), and eighth in goals (seven). CHA TOURNAMENT FORMAT With the 2017-18 regular season in the books, Penn State enters the CHA Tournament as the No. 4 seed. Robert Morris clinched its second-straight CHA regular season title and is the No. 1 seed. Mercyhurst is the No. 2 seed, Syracuse is No. 3, while Lindenwood is No. 5 and RIT is the No. 6 seed. PLAYING EXTRA TIME The Nittany Lions have played 15 overtime contests this season, which ties the NCAA record set by Boston U. (2009-10). Penn State is 1-3-11 in overtime contests this year. The Nittany Lions finished the regular season one tie shy of tying the NCAA record for ties in a season (12 - Boston U. - 2009-10). CHA HONORS Five Nittany Lions have combined for 15 awards from the College Hockey America (CHA) conference in 2017-18. Hannah Ehresmann and Daniela Paniccia have both been named the CHA Goalie of the Week. Freshmen Natalie Heising, Katie Rankin, and Sophie Slattery have all been named the CHA Rookie of the Week. In addition to being named Rookie of the Week, Heising has been named the CHA Player of the Week and the CHA Rookie of the Month. NEW FACES Along with the seven freshmen, the Penn State women s hockey program welcomes three new faces to Hockey Valley. The Nittany Lion freshman class is comprised of Chantal Burke, Natalie Heising, Cam Leonard, Shea Nelson, Katie Rankin, Morgan Rolph, and Sophie Slattery. Behind the bench, first-year head coach Jeff Kampersal brought on Celeste Brown and Allison Coomey to complete his coaching staff. EIGHT OVER FIVE Heading into the CHA Tournament, freshman Natalie Heising has scored eight goals over a five-game span. In the regular season finale against Lindenwood, Heising recorded the seventh hat trick in program history and she became the second Nittany Lion freshman to tally a hat trick. SMART LIONS Seven members of the Penn State women s hockey program were named All-American Scholars for the 2016-17 season, as announced by American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA). Laura Bowman, Kelsey Crow, Katie McMillan, Amy Petersen, Kelly Seward, Bella Sutton, and Christi Vetter were among the 220 Division I-II student-athletes recognized by the AHCA. COACH KAMPERSAL Jeff Kampersal brings more than 20 years of experience as a head coach to Hockey Valley. Prior to joining the Nittany Lions during the summer of 2017, Coach Kampersal was the head coach of the Princeton Tigers for 21 seasons. During his tenure at Princeton, Coach Kampersal tallied a record of 327-261-58. Heading into the 2017-18 season, Kampersal ranks fifth in career victories among active women s hockey coaches with 327, a total that ranks seventh all-time. HEISING WINS GOLD Natalie Heising and the U.S. Women s National Under-18 Team defeated Canada, 3-1, to capture its third-straight IIHF Under-18 Women s World Championship on Jan. 14, 2017. Heising, a forward from Maple Grove, Minn., was named one of Team USA s three top players of the tournament. PRESEASON POLL After finishing fourth in the 2016-17 College Hockey America (CHA) regular season standings, the Penn State women s hockey team was selected fourth in the 2017-18 CHA preseason poll. WELCOME BACK Penn State returns 17 letterwinners to the team for the 2017-18 season, including a pair of College Hockey America (CHA) All-Rookie Team honorees. In their first year donning the Blue & White, Brooke Madsen and Katie McMillan made their presence felt throughout the season. Madsen, a forward, played in all 35 games and netted 21 points (7g, 14a). Madsen s season was highlighted with a threeassist outing in an 8-1 victory at Union (10/7). BACK-TO-BACK SHUTOUTS The Penn State women s hockey team tallied a pair of shutout victories in its series win at RIT on Dec. 1-2. Penn State captured a 5-0 victory in the opener before tallying a 2-0 decision in the finale. 2017-18 CAPTAINS Senior defenseman Bella Sutton is the captain of the 2017-18 Nittany Lions, while Kelsey Crow and Aly Hardy are the alternate captains. Sutton holds the major scoring program records by a defenseman with 16 goals, 41 assists, and 57 points. During the 2017-18 season, Sutton has recorded a career-best year in assists (14) and points (17). On the power play, Sutton holds the program record in assists (23), is tied for the program lead in points (32), and ranks fifth in goals (nine). Crow, a junior defenseman, served as an alternate captain last season. Crow is second in goals by a defenseman (nine), is third in points by a defenseman (26), and is tied for third in assists (17). In 2017-18, Crow has recorded a career-best year in goals (four), assists (10), and points (14). Hardy, a senior forward, has played in 105 games and tallied 12 points on four goals and eight assists. Off the ice, Hardy serves as the vice president for the Penn State Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB).
