Welcome to our 8th Annual Bull Sale. I m in between jotting down a few footnotes and heading out to check cows in a -35 wind chill and I m thinking to myself, where are all the rednecks with their diesel pushers to warm up this environment a little? Nothing like a good old fashioned Canadian winter to make a person appreciate the finer things in life.like a warm bed. The Southern Alberta area experienced one of its most productive summers in recent history. Anyone that wasn t hailed out seemed to be enjoying bumper crops. Top that off with the way this cattle market is at all time highs, the outlook for the agriculture industry, and especially those of us in the cattle business, is finally in a sustainable mode. Speaking of cattle, the bulls we have for sale this year were picked out of 340 mother cows. We think we cull hard, and we do believe that our bulls will speak for themselves. (Not sure why I spent 2 weeks writing footnotes, if they can do the talking). Needless to say, I do believe that for the commercial cattleman out there our bulls may not be managed to the extent they could be, or presented with the flair they should be, but $ for $ we can rival most outfits in the industry with the quality from top to bottom. If you wonder why I say most, and not all, it s because we re always trying to improve. The bulls were weaned in late October this year, which is a good month later than they should have been. They are a bit greener this year than they were last year, which I think, is a good thing. I ve tried to describe the bulls in as much as whether they d be suitable for heifers or cows, and I feel very confident in the bulls marked as calving ease. Carcass evaluating In searching for another herd bull, I ve been noticing lately how much emphasis is being put on carcass EPD s. Even though I m not a big EPD fan, it is something I will pay attention to, especially in regards to carcass quality. The problem I m having is finding the information in a given catalog that will actually do me any good. The data I m really looking for that will help me find the bull that will be most profitable for us is usually never published. For instance, to tell you marbling and numbers, without telling you Lean Meat Yield and Fat numbers, is very misleading. Having an incredibly high marbling EPD is great. Unless it comes with an incredibly high Fat EPD. Too much fat = too much waste = less LMY. Angus cattle in general DO NOT have a marbling problem. They have a yield problem. We are still selling pounds of beef, and under virtually no grid program are over fat animals being paid a premium. You can lose a lot of money on a pen of straight Angus cattle if your only criteria is marbling.to not give the fat score along with your LMY is really not giving a fair representation of the true value of that carcass. Our LMY score this year is off of where I d like to see it. But it is there for you to be the final judge of what value to put on that carcass. Like I said, I m not a big EPD fan. They are too easily manipulated. Funny thing though, in searching the Angus Association website for RED bull calves born in 2013 with a.50 Marbling EPD and a.50 EPD and +0.00 Fat EPD, Thistle Ridge Ranch produced the most bulls. Maybe I m starting to like those EPD s a bit more now.
