A Word From The Publisher Where did this year go? It seems like just yesterday I was putting together our January issue and here I am writing the foreword in our year end holiday issue. Next week is Thanksgiving and blink it will be Christmas again. Those of us who host Skeet shoots have been working on our schedules and trying to figure out how we can get more of you to come shoot with us in 2018. The Louisiana and Texas Skeet Schedules have been set and can be found on the Flyers Page of our website. We will share the schedules of other states as they are sent to us. I have already started working on flyers for 2018 shoots. We will be posting those as they are done. If your club is working on flyers, please send them to us so we can share them with our readers. Many people use our website as a go to place to find out about shoots, particularly in Zone VI. We are happy to share those we receive from other states, as well. It is Thanksgiving time and I want to thank our corporate sponsors for helping us continue to serve our readers and promote the sport of American Skeet. If you would like to buy advertising space in our publication, please call me. We reach readers from Coast to Coast and in four foreign countries. I also want to thank our readers for their support. From Doug, Debbie and Skeeter at the Red Chute Gazette, we send to you our Best Wishes for Healthy and Happy Thanksgiving and a very Merry Christmas! Until we meet again in these pages or on the Skeet field, I am wishing you 3 @ 8. Doug Frey Page 2

Poule D eau Open The last registered Skeet shoot of the Louisiana Skeet year is the Poule D'eau Open. It was actually two shoots, a 28 Gauge Marathon on Saturday, October 14 and a.410 Marathon on Sunday, October 15. Those shoots are hosted by Lafayette Skeet Academy on David and Mary Hebert s Farm near Kaplan, Louisiana. These shots are some of the most fun shoots of the year. The weather is usually pleasant in October and there just seems to be less stress involved. We had several shooters who registered targets in gauges other than the scheduled program. That was just fine with us and we were happy to accommodate them. Ben Hulsey, David Hebert and Robert Myers On Saturday, we had three shooters post a 194 in the 28 Gauge. A shoot-off determined the winners. The Champion was David Hebert, Robert U. Myers took Runner-Up and Ben Hulsey took Third Place honors. Jacob Moore Page 9

Dining on The Road In October 2017, Debbie and I went to one of our favorite haunts for rest and relaxation. We were celebrating 40 years of wedded bliss and this has been a stressful year. It was past time for a trip to the Alabama Gulf Coast. Gee, we had not been there for ten whole months! I will not go into details, but it has been a tough ten months. Nothing is as relaxing as beach time! A trip to the coast is also a great opportunity to check out some restaurants for Dining on The Road. As things worked out, we passed through Mobile around lunch time. You don t really think that was an accident? I had hoped to dine at the BLUEGILL RESTAURANT. Unfortunately, it was not open. Apparently that restaurant is closed on Mondays. So, we stopped at The Original Oyster House just down the road. From the look of the parking lot, it looked like others had the same idea. In 1983, The Original Oyster House seafood restaurant first opened its doors in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The restaurant was the dream of Joe and Mary Lou Roszkowski and David and Jane Dekle. After several renovations, that location now seats 300 diners and employs 130 people. In 1985 they opened their second location on the Causeway, overlooking Mobile Bay. After renovations, that location will now serve 300 diners. Their focus is simply southern seafood in a casual atmosphere with genuine southern hospitality. Debbie and I have eaten at the original location in the Bayou Village Shopping Center in Gulf Shores, but never this second location which is across the street from another great eatery, Felix s Fish Camp. Actually, the décor of this location of The Original Oyster House is very similar to that of Felix s. The restaurant is built up on piers to protect the structure from the tidal flow from hurricanes. Located on the Battleship Parkway, also known as the Mobile Bay Causeway, the diners have panoramic views of Mobile Bay. Red Chute Gazette Page 33
Dining on The Road After studying the menu, we decided to try the Shell Shocked Oyster Combo which included four of Joe and Dave s favorite baked oysters and six fried oysters with homemade remoulade sauce. The baked oysters are baked with garlic cocktail sauce, Bill-E s Small Batch Bacon and grated Parmesan cheese. The fried oysters were small but perfectly cooked. The baked oysters were each resting on an oyster sized plank of bacon, not chopped bacon. We were not disappointed! On this visit, we were looking for lunch and not a heavy meal. They offer different lunch specials every day. For example, fried grits with blackened shrimp and Tasso cream or coconut fried shrimp with Pina Colada sauce. On some days, crab melt and seafood gumbo or blackened fish Ponchartrain. As an appetizer, I had to try a cup of the homemade seafood gumbo which is a Mobile Bay recipe made fresh daily, with crab meat, fish, shrimp and rich bacon rendered roux. I did enjoy it. I don t believe I have ever eaten in a restaurant where the bacon used in the dishes was referred to by brand name. I did a little research and found that a fellow named Bill E Stitt in Fairhope, Alabama had an obsession with bacon. So much so that he set out to create his own bacon. He researched various breeds of pig stock and experimented with recipes for several years trying different curing methods and timing for the smoking process. If you have time, you should do an Internet search on Bill E s bacon. That man certainly has a passion for his product. In any event, that bacon really contributed to the tastiness of this dish. If you are headed through Mobile or down to Gulf Shores, Alabama and you are looking for a good place to eat lunch or dinner, you may want to try either location of The Original Oyster House. They are open for lunch and dinner every day most of the year. They are closed the Sunday after Labor Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. THE REASON FOR THE SEASON Luke 2:1-21 KJV And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. Page 36
And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;) And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. And Joseph and his mother marveled at those things which were spoken of him. Page 37

THE RED CHUTE GAZETTE DEAL Mission Statement The goal of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote the game of American Skeet. Our target market includes Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Our goal is accomplished through publication and distribution an Internet only magazine containing items of interest to those individuals participating in, promoting and supporting registered skeet shoots. Subject matter includes calendars of upcoming events, shoot flyers, shoot reports and pictures. Also included are articles and stories about bird hunting, travel and food. The Deal The Red Chute Gazette will publish flyers advertising registered skeet shoots for your gun club at no cost to your club. Simply send us your flyer in Microsoft Word or PDF format via E-Mail. That s FREE! The Catch If we agree to publish your shoot flyers, you agree to provide us with a shoot report, write-up or article suitable for printing in the Red Chute Gazette. Include pictures (jpeg or gif files) if possible. It doesn t have to be lengthy and it doesn t have be worthy of a Pulitzer. Just tell or show our readers about the fun you had. What about Sporting Clays and Trap or other events? The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered Skeet. Sporting Clays and Trap are not subjects we focus on. We recognize that many gun clubs offer events other than Skeet. We are happy to provide commercial advertising space for clubs that wish to promote other shooting related events...
