Current A.S.A. Softball Rules will govern kickball with the following emphases and modifications: Section 1: Team Rule 1: Players, Field, & Equipment All players must check in with an Intramural Sports Supervisor and present their MSU Student Identification card to participate. A maximum of eight players will compete on a team; a minimum of six players are needed to start the game. Co-Rec teams must start all games with no more male players than female players: 4 male and 4 female, or 3 male and 3 female. Substitutes may enter the game only between innings and during an injury. Section 2: The Field The game is played outdoors on the RecPlex Softball fields. Section 3: Equipment Kickballs will be provided by Intramural Sports on site. Participants must wear shoes. No metal cleats will be allowed. Participants must wear shirt and shorts/pants. Jerseys must be the same/similar color and have a number on the front and/or back. Players may not wear: Guard, cast, or brace made of unyielding leather, plaster, pliable plastic, metal, or any other hard substance, on finger, hand, wrist, or forearm Jewelry Section 1: The Game Rule 2: Game Play Games are 7 innings or 50 minutes. A minimum of six is needed to start and continue a game. A coin flip will determine the choice of home and visiting teams. Be ready to bat/kick in proper order. Teams should hustle in and out between innings as there is a time limit in effect. Each team will have 3 outs to score as many runs as possible. The half-inning will end once three outs are achieved. NOTE: A designated batter or extra batter is allowed. If an extra batter is used in corec, two extra batters must be used; one of each gender. The batter is out in situations similar to softball (force-outs, pop outs, etc.) In addition, a runner is out when they are hit by a thrown ball below the waist.
The fielders are allowed to make the initial out by throwing the ball to the pitcher, and the pitcher stepping on the rubber before the runner touches first base. The ball is put in play when the pitcher rolls the ball toward home plate and the batter attempts to kick the ball. The batter must wait for the ball to be within three feet of home plate before kicking the ball. NOTE: If the batter does not like the pitch, they should not attempt to kick it, and another pitch will be thrown. There are no strikeouts or walks. A batter gets three attempts at kicking the ball. A missed attempt or foul ball is an out. A runner, who leaves the base before the pitch reaches home plate or is kicked, is out and the ball is dead. Leading off and stealing bases between pitches is not allowed. In order to prevent injury and protect the defensive player attempting to make a play on a base runner, the base runner must be called out if they remain on their feet and deliberately crash into a defensive player holding the ball, waiting to apply a tag. NOTE: If the act is determined to be flagrant, the offender shall also be ejected. Bunting will not be permitted and is a dead ball and an automatic out. Section 2: Timing & substitutions Games are 7 innings or 50 minutes. Only the Intramural supervisor starts and stops the clock. No new inning may begin after 50 minutes has elapsed from the time the game began. Substitutions may not be made in the batting order; however, any eight players may play defense. Section 1: Court Monitors and Officials Rule 3: Officials and Their Duties All games will be supervised by an Intramural Supervisor. Rules will be forced primarily by the honor system, and teams must provide their own scorekeeper. The Supervisor s responsibility will be to rule on any situation in which teams cannot agree. A team may appeal to the Supervisor if they feel a player has violated any rule. THE SUPERVISOR S DECISION IS FINAL. Supervisors may warn players who display unsportsmanlike conduct.
