As Term 1 rapidly draws to a close I would like to take the opportunity to thank all students, staff and community members for welcoming me so warmly. I feel honoured to be a part of, what I see as a strong and proud school and community. I am excited by the opportunity to continue as the Acting Principal at Homestead State School next term and endeavour to do my best to support all students, and those who support them. It has been an extremely busy end to the term with lots of exciting things that have happened. The Queen s Baton was an absolute highlight for me, displaying the community spirit and doing the school and district so proud. It was fabulous to see our very own Jeanette Curtis and Jasper Epong carry the Baton, with all of our staff, students and community members running alongside. The feedback from Baton officials about the organisation and catering was described as the best they ve experienced in a long time! Big congratulations to our P&C Committee and all those who contributed. It was certainly an event to remember! As a school we also participated in The National Day Against Bullying with the theme of, Imagine a world without bullying. There was 100% take up in participation from schools in our region and our students designed some great posters that you will see on our classroom walls. We travelled to Greenvale in week 8, for the cluster swimming carnival and you wouldn t be surprised to know that our students did Homestead proud. It was amazing to see smiles on faces and a never give up attitude. I even dipped my toe in the water for the Homestead team and managed to make it to the end just!! I would like to again thank all staff and students for their hard work and contributions at the school this term and I am excited to start Term 2 with some great things planned. Watch this space! Acting Principal Lauren Alderson

Darcy, Denzel, Dana, Jasper, Tyler, Caleb, Mia, Mackaydee and Peyton for being awesome helpers and wonderful representatives of Homestead State School when the Commonwealth Games Queens Baton Relay came to Homestead on the 12th of March 2018. The first international Women s day was celebrated back in 1908 when a group of 15,000 women marched on the streets of New York, demanding their rights. Since then every year on the 8th of March the world joins hands together to support, raise, inspire and motivate women across all fields of work. The purpose of this day is to focus on various themes such as innovation, the portrayal of women in the media, or the importance of education and career opportunities. The official logo of International Women s Day is the symbol of Venus. The colour purple symbolises dignity and justice, which are the two important goals which IWD aims to achieve for all women in all parts of the world.

The Preps have been very busy students this term learning their Sight Words. They have been discovering Our Living World in Science, exploring the living world using their senses and identifying living things and their needs. They are very busy constructing a farm and making sure the animals have shelter, food and water.

Japanese Years 5 & 6 have been participating in online Japanese lessons through the CTSDE this year. Sensei Sandy has been teaching the students who are thoroughly enjoying the program.

Homestead State School held its annual Clean Up Australia Day on Friday the 9th of March, ahead of the Commonwealth Games Queens Baton Relay coming to town. The students took great pride in participating and we were surprised at just how much rubbish we gathered on our short stretch of the highway. Thank you to Senior Constable Christine for joining us on the day and helping to keep us safe, and great job Homestead State School students, well done! In 1989 an 'average Australian bloke', Ian Kiernan, had a simple idea to make a difference in his own backyard - Sydney Harbour. This simple idea has now become the nation's largest community-based environmental event, Clean Up Australia Day. Almost 300,000 volunteers turned out on the first Clean Up Australia Day in 1990 and that involvement has steadily increased ever since. In the past 25 years, Australians have devoted more than 27.2 million hours towards the environment through Clean Up Australia Day and collected over 288,000 tonnes of rubbish.

On Monday the 12th of March, the Commonwealth Games Queens Baton Relay came to Homestead! It was great to see the community come and cheer the Baton Bearers on and meet the entourage which travelled here and enjoyed lunch at Homestead State School. The Homestead State School P&C Association received many compliments for the lovely lunch and the locals enjoyed a sausage sizzle. The school looked wonderful thanks to all the volunteers who attended the working bee on the Sunday. What a pleasure it is to be a part of the Homestead community who always shines through with helping hands when there is work to be done.

We all had a fantastic time at the Dalrymple Cluster Swimming Carnival held in Greenvale in Week 8. Congratulations to Darcy Hoch on his fantastic effort on the day achieving Age Champion, good one Darcy! Our parent/teacher relay team were also great sports on the day setting a wonderful example of participation, having fun and giving it a go for the Homestead team, Go Homestead!!

The Homestead State School P&C Association held their Annual General Meeting on Monday the 26th of March, 2018. All executive positions were made vacant and the following executive committee were voted in: President: Brodie McGill Vice President: Jodie Polinelli Treasurer: Kaye Griffiths Secretary: Sondra Epong Events & Catering Manager: Trina Ford Importantly, the 2018 Constitution and the 2018 Student Protection and Risk Management Plan was adopted by the P&C. Congratulations to all those elected, we look forward to a very positive and productive year. Footy Tipping Footy season has begun! Thank you to all those participating in our Footy Tipping Fundraiser this year, it s sure to be a very competitive but friendly competition again this season. Thank you very much to our lifetime member Jeanette Curtis for running this fundraiser again this year for the P&C. Tuckshop Tuckshop continues to be a successful fundraiser for our P&C Association. This is available every day during the week with items such as pies, toasted sandwiches, sausage rolls, muffins, meals and poppers for sale. As always, there will be regular $5.00 tuckshop days every second Friday. Queens Baton Relay Thank you to all those in the community who helped with the Working Bee and the catering for the Commonwealth Games Queens Baton Relay. This was such a special event for our community and the community spirit really shone through leading up to the event and on the day of the event.
