NO. 3 GAMECOCKS SET FOR LIZ MURPHEY COLLEGIATE CLASSIC No. 3 South Carolina will look to begin building momentum to take into postseason play this weekend at the 42nd Annual Liz Murphy Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga. The Gamecocks begin play on Friday morning and are paired with No. 2 Southern Cal for the opening round of stroke play. The event runs through Sunday at the par-72, 6,401-yard University of Georgia Golf Course. THE LINEUP In just her second appearance in the Gamecock lineup, freshman Ainhoa Olarra takes the top spot this week. Olarra made her debut in the lineup at the spring-opening Florida State Match-Up finishing T32 at 11-over. Sophomores Katelyn Dambaugh and Jia Xin Yang follow, with junior Sarah Schmelzel and senior Justine Dreher rounding out the top five. HISTORY AT THE LIZ MURPHEY The Gamecocks are making their first appearance at the event since the spring of 2012 when they finished fifth with a 54-hole total of 875 (+11). This weekend, South Carolina will look to continue a long history of success at the UGA Golf Course. The venue is the site of the Gamecocks 2002 SEC Championship. Kristy McPherson posted a 209 (-7) to take medalist honors for the second straight season at the conference event. In 2008, Benedicte Toumpsin won medalist honors at the NCAA East Regional at the course, TOURNAMENT FIELD (Golfstat/GolfWeek Rankings) (20/21) Alabama (7/8) Arkansas (28/22) Auburn Baylor (5/3) Duke Georgia (9/9) Northwestern Purdue (3/5) South Carolina (2/2) Southern Cal (16/14) Stanford (4/4) UCLA and the Gamecocks also finished 12th at the 1993 NCAA Championship held at the UGA Golf Course, the third-best championship finish in school history. FORMAT In 2014, the Liz Murphey became one of the first women s events to switch to a combination of stroke and match play in advance of the NCAA Championships adaptation of a similar format in 2015. The teams will play 18 holes of stroke play qualifying, then the top eight teams will move on to match play in the Red bracket while the remaining four teams continue on in the Black bracket. Saturday features two rounds of match play followed by one on Sunday. BREAKING DOWN THE FIELD On a run of 13-straight regular-season top-5 finishes, the Gamecocks face yet another elite field with the Liz Murphey field of 12 featuring eight teams in the top 25 of the latest edition of the Golfstat Relative Ratings. The 12 teams own 13 of the 15 NCAA team titles in the 2000s, and five of the top 10 collegiate individuals will be on display as well. 2014-15 SOUTH CAROLINA women s golf -1- #Gamecocks

LAST TIME OUT South Carolina opened the spring season with a pair of top-five finishes, taking fourth at the Florida State Match-Up and fifth at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, a tournament the program hosts in Hilton Head Island, S.C. In an elite field, the Gamecocks battled back from a tough opening day at the Long Cove Club for the fifth place finish at the DRI, recording a three-day total of 890 (+38). Dambaugh earned her second-best finish of the season to lead South Carolina, finishing at 8-over (221) to take 16th. FALL RECAP During the best fall in program history, South Carolina reached the No. 1 spot on both the Golfweek/Sagarin and Golfstat Relative Rankings for the first time ever before finishing the year ranked No. 2 in both rankings behind Washington. The Gamecocks started the season with a head-turning win at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate, which boasted the toughest field of the regular season, before posting a runner-up finish at the Tar Heel Invitational. South Carolina returned to the top at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate before wrapping up the fall with a third-place result at the Landfall Tradition. In four fall starts, the Gamecocks posted two wins and did not fall out of the top three. Golfweek named South Carolina its team of the week twice during the first half of the season. The 54-hole scores from the Gamecocks four fall events all rank in top 10 in program history. GOING LOW Nearly half (26 of 58) of the Gamecocks individual rounds in the fall season were at par or better. The total includes Hillow s program record 65 at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships (Oct. 19, 2014) and three rounds of 68 two from Dreher at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate and one from Dambaugh at the Tar Heel Invitational. STROKE STORY Dreher posted a 71.92 stroke average last fall to lead the Gamecocks into the spring and currently tops the program s single season scoring average (min. 18 rounds) at 72.67. In the program s career scoring average (min. 55 rounds), Schmelzel checks in at No. 2 with a 74.33 average and Dreher is just behind her at 74.35. NEW GROUND The Gamecocks returned to the No. 1 spot in the Golfweek/Sagarin and assumed the top spot in the Golfstat Relative Rankings for the first time ever after their win at the Mercedes-Benz Championship. After finishing the season behind top-ranked Washington, the Gamecocks retook the No. 1 spot in the Golfstat Relative Rankings in Feburary after the Huskies posted a sixth-place finish in their first spring tournament. The pair have exchanged spots once again, with Washington back at the No. 1 spot in this week s rankings. WHO S BACK Three of the five golfers from the Gamecocks core lineup in 2013-14, including Dreher and sophomore All-SEC honoree Katelyn Dambaugh, return. Junior Sarah Schmelzel, an SEC All-Freshman selection in the 2012-13 season, is back as well after missing the fall with an injury. Nearly every returning player has been in the Gamecock lineup at some point in her career. AMONG THE ELITE Climbing as high as No. 4, South Carolina finished last season at No. 6 in the Golfstat rankings. The team finished in the top six at every regular-season tournament and registered nine straight top-five finishes for the first time in program history. A pair of wins at the Florida State Match-Up and PING ASU Invitational as well as runner-up finishes at the SEC Championship and NCAA East Regional also highlighted the season. INTERNATIONAL SUMMER Justine Dreher and Team France captured the European Ladies Amateur Team crown in Slovenia, defeating England, Spain and Finland. Dreher went undefeated at the match play event. UP NEXT FOR THE GAMECOCKS South Carolina goes West for its final regular-season tournament of the season at the PING ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., April 10-12.
