JOHN S FACES #4 SEED LOUISVILLE IN SUNDAY S QUARTERFINALS With a 51-45 victory over Seton Hall in Saturday s Second Round, the No. 5 seed Red Storm will face No. 4 seed Louisville in the 2013 Quarterfinals on Sunday at noon. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPNU with Beth Mowins and Brooke Weisbrod calling the game live from the XL Center. The game will be a rematch of last year s Quarterfinal, where the then-no. 2 seed St. John s defeated then-no. 7 seed Louisville, 68-61 in overtime. The win was the first for St. John s against the Cardinals in BIG EAST Tournament action as Louisville won the other two meetings. St. John s and Louisville were tied for fourth place at 11-5 in the conference. However, Louisville was granted the higher seed because of St. John s regular-season loss to the Cardinals, 57-54, on Jan. 27. St. John s will be wearing its alternate black uniforms for Sunday s game. The Red Storm is 4-2 wearing the blacks this season. St. John s wore the blacks against DePaul on March 4. Before that, the Red Storm wore them at Villanova on Feb. 27. ON THE BENCH First-year head coach Joe Tartamella marked his first-career BIG EAST Tournament victory on Saturday against the Pirates. Tartamella is 18-11 (.621) in his first season as St. John s head coach. STORMIN INTO THE POSTSEASON Since playing then-no. 13/12 Louisville on Jan. 27, St. John s has won nine of its last 11 games with losses to then-no. 3/2 Connecticut at home, 71-65 and on the road at Seton Hall on March 2, 51-60, one of St. John s home-and-home partner. 2012-13 ST. JOHN S WOMEN S BASKETBALL POSTSEASON NOTES and Nadirah McKenith were averaging double figures, led by Smith s 16.5 points per game and McKenith s 12.6. In the 11 games after, St. John s has four players in double figures, still led by Smith with 16.8 ppg, followed by McKenith with 13.0 ppg. Additionally, junior guard Briana Brown has averaged in double digits with 11.2 per game and rookie guard Aliyyah Handford has stepped up with 10.6 ppg. St. John s averages 63.2 points per game in the last 11 games, compared to 59.5 in the first 18. STJ also has an average margin of victory of +7.2 points per game, compared to +4.5 points per game after the last Louisville game. LAST TIME THEY MET St. John s and Louisville last met on Jan. 27, 2013 at the KFC YUM! Center. The Red Storm lost, 57-54 to the then-no. 13/12 Louisville Cardinals. The loss came four days after St. John s lost at the buzzer to Syracuse with an unbelievable beyond half court shot by the Orange s Brittney Sykes. St. John s led by three, 52-49, with 5:46 left; but Louisville came back to tie it and go ahead by two on two free throws from Sara Hammond with 3:05 on the clock. Two more free throws by Hammond and a layup by Bria Smith gave Louisville a five-point cushion, 57-52, with 1:45 remaining. St. John s senior guard Shenneika Smith made two free throws with 42 seconds showing, making it a three-point game. Smith came up with a key defensive play as she blocked a long jumper by Louisville s Shone Schimmel and grabbed the rebound for St. John s possession in the final 31 seconds. Smith s attempted 3 missed and Red Storm rookie guard Aliyyah Handford got a handle on the rebound. Handford passed it out of the pile to senior guard Nadirah McKenith who attempted a potential buzzer-beating 3, but her shot missed. Smith led all scorers with 23 points, shooting 9-for-20 from the field, including 2-for-8 from beyond the arc. Smith scored 19 points in the second half. RED STORM VS. CARDINALS Louisville holds a three-game lead over St. John s in the overall series, 7-4. The Red Storm has won two of its last three meetings, including last year s BIG EAST tourney victory. St. John s won the first meeting between the teams, on Feb. 15, 2006, 79-63. Senior guard Shenneika Smith averages 19.8 points per game against the Cardinals in four meetings. Smith has had 20 or more points in three of those four meetings. STJ-LOUISVILLE IN THE TOURNEY St. John s and Louisville have met three times in BIG EAST Championship action. The Cardinals are 2-1 over the Red Storm in postseason play, with St. John s earning its first postseason win over Louisville last year, 68-61 in overtime of the Quarterfinals. The Cardinals had defeated the Red Storm in the first round in twoconsecutive seasons, 2008 and 2007, knocking St. John s out of Championship contention. In 2007, No. 5 seed Louisville defeated No. 12 seed St. John s, 68-54. In 2008, No. 7 seed Louisville deafeated No. 10 seed St. John s, 63-47. 2012 QUARTERFINAL REMATCH: STJ 68, LOU 61 (OT), MARCH 4, 2012 Junior Shenneika Smith led St. John s with 24 points. It was her first 20-point effort of the season. The last time Smith had 20 points was at Louisville on Jan. 4, 2011. She scored 23 points in the Red Storm s 84-73 loss at the KFC Yum! Center. The win was the sixth-straight victory over a ranked opponent for the Red Storm this season. It was also St. John s first overtime game of the year. STJ lead by nine, 40-31 with 11:31 left. The game was tied 54-54 with 3:21 remaining. A layup by Eugeneia McPherson gave STJ back the 2-point edge, but Louisville tied the game again with with 1:09 left in regulation. In overtime. STJ led 60-56 within the first 1:30 and eventually led by 10, 69-58 after making 5-of-6 free throws in the final 44 seconds of OT. POSTSEASON AWARDS FOR RED STORM On Thursday, St. John s had three student-athletes honored by the BIG EAST coaches for their accomplishments all season. Senior guards Shenneika Smith and Nadirah McKenith were voted to the 2013 BIG EAST first team; while rookie guard Aliyyah Handford was unanimously selected to the BIG EAST all-freshman team. It was Smith s second-straight time on the first team. St. John s was only one of three teams to have multiple honorees on the first team. POSTGAME NOTES: STJ 51, SHU 45 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP SECOND ROUND Pirates opened the game on a 9-4 run as St. John s called its first timeout 3:44 into the contest. Senior guard Shenneika Smith scored 11 of the team s first 13 points. It was tied at 13 with 8:30 left in the first half, before St. John s went on a 7-0 run over the last three minutes to hold a 20-13 lead with 5:37 left in the first period. STJ led 24-18 at the intermission, with 11 points off second-chance points and 15 off Seton Hall turnovers. STJ made five free throws in the final 90 seconds to close it out. St. John s sophomore Amber Thompson had 14 points and 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Junior Briana Brown made up the minutes and points that senior guard Nadirah McKenith lacked due to limited minutes with a knee injury. Smith also played limited minutes as she recorded her fourth foul with nine minutes left in the second period. St. John s went 2-1 over Seton Hall this season. The win was redemption for St. John s after losing on the road on March 4, which contributed to the Red Storm not earning a doublebye in the BIG EAST Tourney. SCOUTING LOUISVILLE The No. 4 seed in the bracket, the Cardinals are ranked No. 13/15 in the top 25 polls and boast a 23-7 record overall. Louisville averages 72.1 points per game with a 16.5 margin of victory. Louisville has three players who average double figures led by Shoni Schimmel with 13.7 ppg. She is aided by Sara Hammond with 10.3 ppg and Antonita Slaughter with 10.2 ppg. CAREER NOTES With six rebounds against Seton Hall, senior guard Shenneika Smith tied former teammate Joy McCorvey, current assistant coach at Michigan, for fourth on St. John s all-time rebounding list. Smith will go into Sunday s game with 777 boards. Amber Thompson s double-double against Seton Hall on Saturday was her fourth of the season and seventh of her career. Briana Brown s 14-point effort vs. Seton Hall was her 13th time scoring double figures this season and the most points she s scored since she recorded 16 on Feb. 2 vs. then-no. 3/2 Connecticut.
