2011-12 WOMEN S GYMNASTICS GREETINGS FROM THE OHIO STATE WOMEN S GYMNASTICS TEAM! Dear Friends and Family of Ohio State Women s Gymnastics, We are half-way through our competitive season, and it has already been a season marked with great achievements! We hope that you have been able to follow us online, at our meets, and on TV as we have been televised on the Big Ten Network. We started the season with our highest ever season-opening meet score in program history, and we are currently ranked 11th in the nation, the highest our team has been since the beginning of 2009. And we have been maintaining this rank from week to week, remaining consistent and gradually improving on the details. It s an exciting place to be! Our team has also been excelling in the classroom, as we achieved the highest team grade point average of any women s team in the Autumn Quarter! The girls are also continuing to reach out to the community, serving in many ways, especially through the 2nd & 7 reading program, which promotes literacy in Central Ohio elementary schools. With three home meets and one away meet left before the championship season begins, there is still so much that you will see from these Buckeyes! We hope that you will be able to join us for our Friends & Family reception after the Penn State double dual! You will find more information about it in this newsletter. We also hope that you ll be able to watch us either live or on the BTN at our Big Ten Championship meet. The format is changing, and you can read about the new competitive format in the following pages as well. Thanks again for all of your support! We ll see you in St. John Arena! Be sure to keep looking for more emails with meet updates, and follow us on Facebook, Youtube and Twitter. GO BUCKS! 2011-12 WOMEN S GYMNASTICS SEASON RECAP AND OUTLOOK FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SEASON SO FAR! Week 1 We beat Minnesota in their home arena! Sophomore Sarah Miller stuck a HUGE vault and Senior Casey Williamson was named OSU s MVP with her strong bar routine and nearly flawless floor routine. Week 2 We continued to have strong performances at Michigan, but lost a close dual meet in Ann Arbor. Senior Aly Marohn performed a beautiful bar routine with a stuck double front dismount and sophomore Melanie Shaffer stuck a big double tuck dismount off beam! Week 3 In our first home meet, we crushed GWU by over 6 points with a season-high 195.90! Junior Colleen Dean scored a 9.90 on floor and won the all-around, and Sophomore Alex DeLuca posted a season-high 9.825 on floor. Week 4 Traveling to Pitt, we picked up another win with great performances on vault. Senior Nicole Krauter stuck for a career-high 9.875 and Casey won bars with a 9.825. Week 5 Our meet at Illinois was televised live on the Big Ten Network, and it sure was a close one! We had our season-high team score on beam with a 49.05, with Aly and Colleen both scoring 9.85. Week 6 We set a new season-high of 196.125 at home vs. Iowa on Friday night, then went to WVU for a quad meet with Auburn and Ball State as well, and won again! Our team went 4-0 this weekend, and we reached new season-high s on Beam (49.10) and Bars (49.075). Week 7 HISTORY IN THE MAKING! The Buckeyes won against Denver with a 197.625, the highest team score Ohio State has ever received! We also scored 49.50 on beam and 49.60 on floor to set new records. We earned TEN individual 9.9+ scores from Seniors Aly Marohn, Nicole Krauter, Casey Williamson, Junior Colleen Dean, and Sophomores Sarah Miller and Melanie Shaffer. Dean was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week for her 39.60 career high AA. PENN STATE DOUBLE DUAL & POST-MEET RECEPTION At our next home meet, which is this Saturday, February 25th at 4 pm, we will have a Friends & Family post-meet reception in the Varsity O Room of the football stadium. It will start as soon as the meet ends, approximately at 6 pm. We will have food and refreshments, and time for you to interact with team members and coaches. Please RSVP to the evite you should have received to let us know how many people will be attending! We re looking forward to seeing you! WHAT TO EXPECT FOR THE REST OF THE REGULAR SEASON We re going to have a string of BIG home meets to close out the regular season! Next up is Penn State, who is ranked right ahead of us at 10th in the nation. It s a co-ed meet, so there will be a lot of excitement surrounding that meet. The following weekend, we will be home against Kent State, the team that edged us out of NCAA s last year by one-tenth of a point! We want to pack St. John Arena for this meet! It will be a highly anticipated meet, and we will be passing out limited edition posters that feature our 2012 team motto of Our Honor Defend til the last.10. The Kent State meet will also be our Relay for Life meet, where fans can make donations to support our Gymbotz Relay team that Sophomore Sarah Miller has organized. Next, we ll travel to UNC to hopefully tally another strong away-meet score and pick up another win on the road before returning home for senior meet. We ll be competing on St. Patrick s Day against Oklahoma, and there will be several spirited promotions going on! We ll also honor our five seniors, who have done so much to help this program get to where we are at now. The following weekend, we ll be off to Iowa for Big Ten s! We re currently ranked 3rd in the Big Ten. After Big Ten s, we ll find out where we ll be going for Regionals either Illinois, Arkansas, NC State, Utah, Washington, or Auburn. There will be six teams at each regional site, with the top two qualifying on to NCAA s in Duluth, GA. It s going to be an incredible second-half of the season! BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS INFORMATION AND UPDATES This year, the Big Ten has added Nebraska, bringing the total number of schools with women s gymnastics up to 8! Instead of doing one, big meet with lots of bye rotations, this year we will be having two sets of quad meets with no byes! The meet should be much faster, to say the least. The sessions will be organized based on the team s national rank the week before the championship meet: the top 4 teams will compete in the evening session at 6 pm CST and the bottom 4 teams will compete at 1 pm CST. The Big Ten Network will be covering both sessions. BUCKEYE CHAT WITH SENIOR CASEY WILLIAMSON Hey Buckeye Fans! We re already halfway through the season and it s going fast! Practices are going well and our team is looking better than ever. It s getting around that time where we step into fifth gear and prepare for Big Ten s, Regionals, and Nationals. Since it s my last year, I am looking forward to competing in the Big Ten Championships and going to Nationals!! We are improving week by week and we are on the road to Nationals. This is the year we are going to make it! Our team s gymnastics is amazing and our team chemistry is strong. This year s team has been better than previous teams not because of our talent (although it is a key factor), but our team chemistry. This year we are all on the same page. We all know what goals we want to accomplish and we are all willing and ready to fight for them. This year our team is bonded. We are all best friends and get along so well with each other. This is by far the best team I have been on in all my years as a gymnast because of our strong bond that we all hold with each other. It s hard to believe that I will only be competing in St. John Arena three more times. As for my plans after my gymnastics career ends, I will graduate with a major in Psychology and a minor in Speech and Hearing Sciences. I am planning on having a fifth year to finish up all of my classes. After that I plan to move somewhere warm and work with marine animals, which has been a life-long dream of mine :) Things that I will miss the most about gymnastics are, of course, my gymnast body and physique. But, what I will miss the most are my teammates. I have so many great memories and experiences with my team that I will not experience once I am gone. I will miss the good times with them in the gym, traveling to competitions, and going to Nationals this year. But it s not over yet! The journey is still underway, and I m excited for the second-half of the season, and seeing as many Buckeye fans as possible at our meets! Thanks for all your support! GO BUCKS!
