Boys Football League Report Thursday 25 th February 2016 @ Newsome High School. The team for this fixture was: Alfie Burrows (c), Jake Rhodes, Joseph Sherwood, Tom Barker, Daniel Broadly, Bailey Mallinson, and Owen Smith. Whenever we play other teams in the league, we always have a battle on our hands, as we play in the Year 6 League. Today was no exception, as our Year 6 boys were away at Castleton. Our first match was against Fixby. A couple of the boys in their team were nearly as tall as our supporters. Initially, we were a little intimidated by their physical size and unfortunately they scored an early deflected goal which gave Jake in goal no chance. However, that was the catalyst which was needed for our captain, Alfie, to lead by example, attacking down the wing showing great skill and determination. We eventually lost the game Fixby 4 Helme 0 Next we played Reinwood Juniors. We started this game in a much more positive manner, putting passes together with everyone working and supporting each other. Bailey made a few great saves in goal which lifted our spirits even further. Alfie, Tom and Owen played some great attacking football, while Jake, Daniel and Joseph worked hard in defence to close players down. In the end we were lucky to concede 2 goals making the final score Reinwood Juniors 2 - Helme 0. The Reinwood coach (who coaches at Manchester City) commented on how skilful you all were and was particularly impressed by Bailey in goal and Alfie down the wing! Finally we played the host side Newsome Juniors. Their coach didn t see us much of a threat as commented on the size of our players. But our pocket rockets soon got stuck in. Daniel played well in goal and Jake took on the role of lone striker up front. We came close to scoring several times forcing their keeper to make a few good saves. In the final couple of minutes, we were really unlucky to be awarded a penalty against us for an accidental hand ball (I would have said ball to arm ) in the box. Daniel stood tall in goals, but had no chance against an extremely powerful shot. Final score Newsome 1 Helme 0.

Everyone played extremely well, showing a fantastic team spirit, along with skill, determination and courage by the bucket load. Thanks as always to our supporters, you are always there for us come wind, rain or freezing temperatures! Mrs Hutson Are you a girl aged 8 11? Do you love dancing? Would you like to take part in a brand new performance piece with professional performers? COME ALONG TO AN AUDITION AT LAWRENCE BATLEY THEATRE ON 18 or 19 MARCH 2016 Internationally renowned performance company Fevered Sleep (feveredsleep.co.uk) are looking for enthusiastic young performers, with some dance experience, to devise and perform in our major new project, Men & Girls Dance. We re running a series of free, creative audition workshops in March. These will be fun, informal and led by the Artistic Director of Fevered Sleep. Following these workshops, we will invite ten girls to join the performance company for a four-week period of creation and rehearsals in May-June, which will lead to two performances at the Lawrence Batley Theatre. Enthusiasm, commitment and a sense of adventure are more important than dance experience or technique. The rehearsal period will be SUNDAY 15 MAY and then SATURDAY 21 MAY ONWARDS. Everyone who attends a session in May needs to be available to rehearse full time (Monday to Friday) from 21 May 3 June. PERFORMANCES ARE: FRIDAY 3 and SATURDAY 4 JUNE, 7.30pm AUDITION TIMES & DATES (you only need to come to one session) 18 MARCH 4.30PM 6.30PM 19 MARCH 11AM 2.30PM

Places at the audition workshops are limited please visit https://feveredsleep.wufoo.eu/forms/lbtaudition-workshop-with-fevered-sleep/ to apply online. If you have any further questions contact Rose Condo, Head of Community Engagement at 01484 4844458 / rose@thelbt.org or contact Fevered Sleep directly on 020 3815 6430 / admin@feveredsleep.co.uk Perfect Paralympic Challenge Tournament On Friday 12th February, our Paralympic Challenge sessions were celebrated in style with a KS2 intra-school tournament. The children worked in 6 mixed age teams, named after 6 inspirational Team GB Paralympians. They had 6 different Paralympic Challenges to visit where they worked as a team to score as many points as possible. During Boccia Shrinking Circle the children aimed their Boccia balls at a target circle that got smaller each round played! On to another Boccia challenge Target Ball. Here the children were trying to score points by moving the football with their Boccia balls. Whichever numbered square the football finished in was the team score. Two Sitting Volleyball challenges next. The first was Spike to Score which

involved serving a partner who would spike the ball towards 4 different target spots to score points. The second was Over the Net where the children worked as a team to hit the ball over the net to each other. The rally was counted up as the points scored.

Goalball Challenge Zigzag Team Pass was lots of fun. The children had to use their listening skills to send the bell ball up and down the team zigzag. Goalball Shoot to Score involved shooting the bell balls into a net to score. Team Sarah Storey 171 Team Gordon Reid 162 Team Ellie Simmonds 138 Team Hannah Cockcroft 135 Team Aled Davies 131 Team Jonnie Peacock 131 When all results were in, the top two teams competed in a mass Sitting Volleyball match final. The other teams spectated and cheered on the finalists so much that the hall roof nearly lifted off! The match was close but Team Gordon Reid came out on top with a score of 35 to 34. Libby was chosen as a Goalball star, Baden as a Boccia star and Tom as a Sitting Volleyball star. All three demonstrated the Helme values all afternoon and were great team players. They were awarded mini Mandevilles, the London 2012 Paralympic mascot. Once again, the Helme children performed at their very best - a joy to watch and be part of! Thank you all! Mme Brian
