THE GREATER PHILADELPHIA LOCKSMITHS ASSOCIATION www.gpla.org President Orvis Kline, CPL, CAL Vice President & Newsletter Editor Michael Nimmo Treasurer Martin Arnold Recording Secretary Nelson Dayton, CML Corresponding Secretary Paul Kline, RL Sergeant at Arms Bruce Wallen Board of Directors Chairman of the Board Clifford L. Shafer, CPS, CML Sven K. Hellwig, Sr., CRL Edward Fitzgerald, CML Barry Wilensky, CRL Dana Barnum, CML, CPS John Williams, CRL In this Issue: Presidential Viewpoint Minutes from February Membership Meeting Calendar of Events Safety Recall from GM SJLA 25 th Anniversary Gala The Professional Locksmith The Monthly Publication of GPLA Volume 60 Issue 3 March 2014 PRESIDENTIAL VIEWPOINT OK whoever ticked off Mother Nature PLEASE apologize and tell her you didn t mean it!! Enough with the snow already! Although I must admit that it hasn t been all bad. I estimate that there have been 10,364 sets of keys lost in the snow! And that s just in our area! My son and I have been happily making replacement keys for, it seems, a goodly portion of those lost keys. Make sure you attend our next General Membership Meeting on March 17 th to pick up some tidbits on working with SFIC systems and learn how to determine the master key for any master key system with just ONE working system key!!! This program will be presented by John Truempy and will include some hands on for anyone interested (hands on after the business portion of our meeting). Stay tuned for other useful programs at future meetings. I would like to thank those members who have agreed to chair the various committees that are so essential to the functioning of our Association. I encourage ALL members to become involved in serving on those committees that make YOUR Association, GPLA, one of the best in the world! I especially want to thank Bill Neff for producing our 2014 Roster for us again! These new Rosters (or Roosters, as some affectionately call them) will be available at the upcoming meeting. One of my goals is to bring the GPLA website into the present! It was initially developed around 1995 using software that hasn t been supported since 2002! Two of GPLA s premier web designers, Bill Neff and Murray Bilker (who are both members of my Electronic Communications Committee well, actually they are the ONLY members of that committee) agreed to make that happen! Bill developed a sample home page using new, modern software and I liked the looks of it, so Bill will now lead in the new look for GPLA s website. Stay tuned for updates on progress. See you on the 17 th. Fraternally, Orvis A Kline, CPL, CAL President, GPLA

Minutes of the February 2014 GPLA General Membership Meeting The February GPLA General Membership Meeting was held at Headquarters February 17, 2014, and was called to order by President Orvis Kline at 7:34 pm. There were no guests. Associate Member Jim Handschuh conducted a 20-minute program on the Trine line of electric strikes. Minutes: Cliff Shafer made a motion, seconded by Dana Barnum, to accept the previous meeting s minutes as published in the newsletter. It passed unanimously. Treasurer s Report: There was no report due to there being no Board meeting this month. Correspondence In & Out: Paul Kline had none. Orvis reported he had received an inquiry from Lockmasters concerning our 2014 convention. President s Report: Orvis reported that he wants our meetings to be informative, and will have educational programs on safes, autos, and i/core as examples. Health & Welfare: It was reported that Jim Sundstrond s wife had surgery on her other foot. Convention: Cliff reported that the convention will be earlier this year September 9-13, 2014. The committee had their first meeting earlier this month. John Williams is the new education chair and Bill Young is the new VIP chair. Bill Neff will be working on a new GPLA website, which will incorporate the convention site, rather than two separate websites. Membership: Mike Nimmo received an application for Apprentice Member from Nick Denaro, who works for Dana Barnum at South Penn Lock and Safe. Martin Arnold gave a breakdown of our current membership of 110: Active-58, Associate-5, Apprentice-2, Charter-1, Shop-14, Honorary-5, and Retired-25. Legislation PA/NJ: Ed Fitzgerald reported there are new guidelines for continuing a NJ license; mainly the education requirements have been lowered for the 2013-2016 period. Holiday Party: Paul Kline reported the Cannstatter is already booked for December. He will check the Pennsauken Country Club. Program: Mark Bolno is talking to John Truempy for the March 17 meeting. New Business: Cliff reported that Ron Marcinkowski would like one or two more people to be available to help respond to an emergency at the headquarters building, such as if the burglar alarm goes off. This led to a discussion on possibly rekeying the door locks. Also, Marty is in touch with the landlord concerning the roof leak in the bathroom. (Continued on page 4)

(Continued from page 2) Good of the Association: Orvis warned against the use of credit cards that contain RFID technology, as the signal is relatively easy to steal. 50/50: $30 was won. Several other people won various items. Orvis won a Trine electric strike that was donated by Jim Handschuh and Trine. There was a motion to adjourn at 9:28pm by Sven Hellwig, seconded by Martin, and carried unanimously. Respectfully submitted, Nelson Dayton, Recording Secretary Locksmith related Safety Notice General Motors has issued recall notice #13454 stating that there is a risk, under certain conditions, that the ignition switch may move out of the run position, resulting in a partial loss of electrical power and turning off the engine. If the ignition switch is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury or fatality. This defect relates to vehicles in model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR, 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit, 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice, 2007 Pontiac G5, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. Per the GM recall notice, parts are not currently available. The GM dealer will replace the ignition switch at no charge once parts are in stock in April. The notice states to direct all questions or concerns to your local dealer or the Pontiac Customer Assistance Center at 1.800.762.2737.
