Tishomingo County 4-H July newsletter June 27, 2017 Service Project Opportunity We will be working on rag quilts for needy children in the community on Tuesday, July 11 and Wednesday, July 12. We will begin at 9 AM and continue working for several hours both days, until the quilts are completed. Participants need to be at least 10 years old and/or have some experience sewing. Please let me know if you are interested in helping. This is a great opportunity to further develop your sewing skills and to volunteer your time to help others while also having fun! Upcoming Events There will be a painting workshop on Thursday, July 6 at 10 AM at the Extension Office. The robotics meetings will be held Monday, July 10 and 24 from 3-5 PM at the Extension Office. There will be a cooking class on Thursday, July 13 at 3 PM at the Extension Office. There will be a Cloverbud Camp for kids ages 5-7 July 17-19, beginning at 9 AM and lasting until approximately 11:30 AM each day. There will be a cake decorating workshop on Monday, July 24 at 9 AM at the Extension Office. 2017 Club Congress We had four senior 4-H ers to attend Club Congress this year at Mississippi State University May 31-June 2. The participants included Jonah Holland, Kelly Aurora, Kim Vogel, and Reuben Grissom. Jonah placed 2 nd in Consumer Education Visual Presentation, 2 nd in Career Pursuit, and 5 th in the PowerPoint Contest; Kelly placed 4 th in Conservation Visual Presentation and also participated in the Forestry Judging Contest; Kim received a blue ribbon for competing in the Consumer Education Contest; and Reuben competed in the Tractor Driving Contest. Congratulations, everyone! Jonah Holland Elected as State 4-H Council Vice President In addition to competing and placing in contests held during Club Congress, Jonah was also elected as State Council Vice President and selected to serve as a State Ambassador and a National Conference Delegate. This is a huge honor and we are very proud of him! Congratulations, Jonah! 2017 Project Achievement Day Tishomingo County was well represented at Project Achievement Day! The Wildlife Judging team (Chase Smith, Austin Rast, and Jackson Gray) placed 1st in the Wildlife Judging Contest. Austin was also the 2nd place high point winner in the Wildlife Judging Contest and Jackson Gray was the 3rd place high point winner. Vinny Sanders placed 1st in both Electric Judging and the Vet Science Visual Presentation contests. Congratulations and great job, everyone! June Dairy Foods Contest We had two 4-H ers to participate in the Dairy Foods Contest on June 6 at the Midway School Building: Maggie Clare Pruitt and Chase Smith. Both did a fantastic job preparing a dish containing at least one cup of dairy product! Congratulations to Maggie Clare for winning 1st place with her Tres Leches Cake and Chase Smith for winning 2nd place with his Slow Cooker Apple Cake! District Horse Photography Contest Results Jonah Holland and Maggie Clare Pruitt both entered photos in the horse photography contest. Jonah received first place for his photo Dining Al Fresco and second place for his photo Noble Grazing. Maggie Clare received fourth place for her photo The 3 Stooges. Great job, Jonah and Maggie Clare! 4-H Co-op Leadership Conference Each year, first place winners at State 4-H Congress, State 4-H Council Officers, and members of the 4-H State Ambassador Team are granted an opportunity to participate in the Cooperative Business Leadership Conference. This year's Conference will be held July 17-20 at Mississippi State University and is sponsored by the Mississippi Council of Cooperatives. From Tishomingo County, Jonah Holland will be attending.
Shooting Sports Club News The State Shooting Sports Invitational will be held July 28-29 in Starkville and West Point. Senior 4-H members who are participating should return their health forms and code of conduct forms to the Extension Office. Volunteer Registration Process If you regularly work with 4-H ers and haven t already gone through the background screening and application process to become a registered volunteer, it is very important that you do so as soon as possible. Northeast District Horse Show Results Congratulations to Noah Carpenter and Kristen Howell for competing in the Northeast District Horse Show that was held June 7-10 at the Starkville Horse Park! Noah competed in the following classes: Saddle and Gaited Mares, Saddle and Gaited Showmanship, Saddle, Horse Pleasure, Racking Horse, Quarter Horse mares, Western Showmanship, Western Pleasure, Western Horsemanship, Western Riding, and Reining. Noah was also the 2 nd place high point winner in the Western Classes. Kristen competed in the following classes: Saddle and Gaited Mares, Saddle and Gaited Showmanship, Saddle Horse Pleasure, Racking Horse, Pole Bending, and Barrel Racing. Livestock Show Information Any 4-H member that plans to show livestock, please let us know. We will need to go over some important information and dates. Also, if this is your first time to show, 4-H members and parents will have to go through the livestock ethics training, which can be done at the Extension Office. Dairy Foods Contest Recipes Tres Leches Cake Yellow cake mix 1 Tbsp. Mexican vanilla flavoring Eggs, water, and oil (as indicated on cake mix box) 1 can evaporated milk 1 can sweetened condensed milk 1 c. heavy cream Whipped topping Sliced fruit of choice Prepare cake according to directions on box, adding vanilla flavoring to mixture. Bake according to cake directions. When cake is done and removed from oven, use fork or skewer stick to make holes all over cake. Mix all the milk products together and pour over the cake, letting it drip down the sides. Refrigerate for 4-6 hours. Top with whipped topping and serve with fruit slices of choice. --Maggie Clare Pruitt, 1 st place, 4-H Division Slow Cooker Apple Cake 1 box cake mix 2 (20 oz.) cans of apple pie filling 8 oz. butter Pour apple pie filling into slow cooker. Top with cake mix and butter. Cook on high for 2-2.5 hours. Serve with vanilla ice cream if desired. --Chase Smith, 2 nd place, 4-H Division Southern Pecan Praline Sheet Cake 1 box Betty Crocker Butter Pecan Cake Mix 16 oz. can Betty Crocker Coconut Pecan Frosting 4 large eggs ¾ c. canola or coconut oil 1 c. half and half ½ c. chopped pecans 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk 3 Tbsp. butter ½ c. chopped pecans Preheat oven to 350. Grease or spray 9x13 baking dish. In mixing bowl, combine all cake ingredients except pecans. Mix well. Add pecans and stir. Pour into baking dish. Bake 40-50 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. For the glaze, melt butter in small saucepan over medium heat. Add sweetened condensed milk and stir. Heat thoroughly then add pecans. Stir again to combine and remove from heat. Pour over entire cake. --Betty Hickey, 1 st place, MHV Division Coconut Pie 3 egg yolks ¾ c. sugar 1 ½ c. milk 1 ½ c. shredded coconut 1 tsp. vanilla 4 Tbs. cornstarch 2 Tbsp. butter 1 pie crust, baked 3 egg whites ¼ tsp. cream of tartar per egg white 1 Tbsp. sugar per egg white For pie mixture, mix egg yolks, sugar, milk, shredded coconut, and cornstarch in blender. Add vanilla and butter to the mixture. Place in microwave safe dish, cooking for about 10 minutes and stirring every 3 minutes. For meringue, beat egg whites, cream of tartar, and sugar for about 10 minutes. Pour pie mixture in baked pie crust and pour meringue mixture on top. Bake at 350 for 11-12 minutes. --Joyce Borden, 2 nd place, MHV Division
