The Kredich Report Coached 2008 Olympic silver medalist and 100m fly American record holder Christine Magnuson Coached 14 All-Americans to 79 certifi cates in three years at UT Athletes have set 10 Lady Vol records, including new marks in all fi ve relays. Directed Richmond to four consecutive Atlantic- 10 championships, and his athletes set 50 school records. Four-time Atlantic-10 Coach of the Year Led Brown women s team to four straight league titles Energized men s swimming team at Brown to four consecutive winning seasons MATT KREDICH Head Swimming Coach Fourth Season Matt Kredich enters his fourth year as the head coach of the Tennessee women s swimming team this fall after guiding the Lady Vol swimmers to one of the best seasons in school history in 2007-08. The Lady Vols fi nished fourth at the Southeastern Conference Championships, placed eighth at the NCAA Championships and were represented at the 2008 Olympic Games. For his efforts, Kredich was named the SEC s Co-Head Coach of the Year and got to travel to Beijing to watch one of his athletes, Christine Magnuson, snag two silver medals for the United States swim team. Kredich was hired on April 30, 2005, to shape the Lady Vol program into one of the nation s elite teams after turning around underperforming programs at the University of Richmond and Brown University. After laying the foundation in his fi rst two seasons at UT, evidence of Tennessee s elite status were found in his third season, not only at the SEC Championships, but at the NCAA Championships and ultimately at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. At the Olympics, Magnuson placed an exclamation point on the end of her fi nal collegiate season by winning silver medals in the 100m butterfl y and the 400m medley relay, setting the American record in both events. Magnuson also won the 100m fl y title at the U.S. Olympic Trials, captured the 100y fl y NCAA Championship and was named SEC Female Swimmer of the Year in 2008. Under Kredich s guidance, Magnuson, who began taking butterfl y seriously only recently, jumped from having the world s 13th fastest time in the 100m fl y in 2007 to being the second-best competitor in the world in the event in 2008. A 23-time All-American, her performances have solidifi ed the Kredich-guided Lady Vol swim team as an elite collegiate program and a legitimate player on the national and international stage. Even before the Olympics, Tennessee was well represented at national and postseason meets. Six current Lady Vols and three former UT swimmers competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Two incoming freshmen also competed at the Trials, a testament to the program s growing notoriety and success. The highlight was Magnuson winning the 100m fl y. Additionally, junior Michele King tied for the U.S. Open championship in the 50m free this past summer. In Kredich s fi rst three seasons at UT, the program has cemented itself as one of the best in the nation. The UT swimming and diving team enjoyed tremendous success in the classroom, in dual meets, and was at its best in the championship season. During his three-year tenure, Kredich has produced 14 All-Americans at Tennessee, who earned 79 All-America certifi cates. Kredich s third season in Orange and White was his most successful yet. In addition to an eighth-place fi nish at the NCAA Championships, as well as fourth-place in the SEC, the Lady Vols also went 5-3 in dual meets with all three losses coming against teams ranked in the top-three at the time. The eighth-place fi nish at NCAAs coupled with the 10th-place fi nish in 2007, gave Tennessee back-to-back fi nishes in the top-10 at the national meet for the fi rst time in school history. Magnuson, who became only the second Lady Vol swimmer to win an individual NCAA title, led nine athletes to 26 All-America certifi cates as UT fi nished with 179.50 points and set four school records. The Lady Vols fi nished No. 7 in the fi nal dual meet CSCAA rankings. The Lady Vols followed back-to-back fi fthplace conference fi nishes with a breakthrough fourth-place fi nish at the 2008 SEC Championship on Feb. 20-23 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. UT scored 477 points and 13 school records fell over the course of four days. Magnuson won three individual events and was part of a victorious relay en route to earning the prestigious Commissioner s Trophy, awarded to the female who earned the most points for her team. Tennessee medaled in nine different events, fi ve swimmers earned fi rst-team All-SEC and Aleksa Akerfelds was named SEC Freshman of the Year. In the regular season, UT began the season 3-0 in dual meets behind wins over Lou- Kredich s Year-By-Year Results 10 In three years at Tennessee, Matt Kredich has produced 14 All-Americans who earned 79 certifi cates. isville and SEC rivals No. 17 Kentucky and South Carolina. The Orange and White also defeated Big Ten foes Northwestern and ana. Tennessee s only dual meet losses came Indi- against No. 1 Auburn, No. 2 Georgia and No. 7 Florida, and all were close meets. The Lady Vols also competed at non-scoring meets, the Hoosierland Open and the Bulldog Invitational, to wrap-up another grueling schedule. With a year at the helm under his belt in the 2006-07 season, Kredich guided Tennessee to a 4-4 dual meet record against some of the nation s top programs, a fi fth-place fi n- ish at the SEC Championships and 10th at the NCAA Championships meet in Minneapolis, Minn. For the fi rst time in 11 years, the Lady Vols cracked into the top 10 at the NCAA Championships by scoring in 11 (200y IM, three-meter diving, 100y fl y, 100y free, 200y back, 200y breast and all fi ve relays) of 15 events they entered for a 127-point total. The team brought home 26 All-America certifi cates for their efforts and set six school records. Kredich and company took a No. 14 national ranking into the SEC Championships held in Lexington, Ky., Feb. 7-10. Tennessee s 349.5 points earned it a fi fth-place fi nish at the meet for the second straight year. Kredich crowned his fi rst SEC champion when Magnuson took over the top spot as the fastest Lady Vol in the 100y butterfl y. She also broke her own school records in the 100y and 200y freestyle as well, and UT swimmers medaled in the 800y free relay, 200y IM, 100y fl y and 100y free at the conference championship meet. During the 2005-06 season, the fi rst under Kredich s direction, the Lady Vols showed improvement and success by every measure. The team broke 11 of the 19 school records in swimming events. Tennessee sent eight swimmers to the NCAA Championships in 12 events and vaulted from 24th in 2005 to a 12th-place NCAA fi nish in 2006 while earning 27 All-America honors. Lady Vol swimmers excelled in a wide variety of disciplines as the Orange and White tallied points in 11 different events. The team total of 104 points was good enough for a 12th-place showing and was the highest scoring output for the team since 1997. At the SEC Championships, held in Knoxville Feb. 15-18, UT swimmers broke fi ve school records as the Big Orange scored in every event contested. The fi fth-place fi nish was a marked improvement over the seventh place fi nish one year earlier. The Lady Vols also had a successful dual meet season under Kredich s guidance. Tennessee s 5-2 mark its highest dual meet win total since the 1998-99 campaign included victories over Louisville, Northwestern and SEC rivals Alabama, South Carolina and Kentucky. A third-place fi nish at the prestigious Purdue Invite helped to highlight the successful 2005-06 regular season. The Tennessee women also excelled in the classroom in 2005-06, achieving a team GPA of 3.30 for the year, the highest in team history. Two of three graduating seniors were awarded prestigious postgraduate scholarships by the Southeastern Conference. Kredich was hired as the head coach at Tennessee after dramatically turning around the University of Richmond women s squad. During Kredich s tenure, the Spiders sent their first-ever swimmers to the NCAA Cham- pionships, had their fi rst-ever All-Americans, and won their fi rst-ever conference championships. In his four years at Richmond, the Spiders won four Atlantic 10 Championships while Kredich was named conference coach of the year all four years. His Spiders also were selected by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) as an Academic All-America squad from 2002-04. Prior to that, at Brown University, he turned a 2-9 women s swimming program in 1992 into Eastern Women s Swimming League Champions in 1996 and 1997. His teams then competed solely in the Ivy League and went on to win the 1998 and 1999 conference crowns. Additionally, he also energized the Brown men s team which was coming off a 3-8 mark when he took over the team in 1996. He led the Bears to four consecutive winning seasons and four top-fi ve fi nishes in the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League. In the process, he was recognized as the EISL Coach of the Year in 1996 and 1997. He also earned EISL Men s Coach of the Year in 1998. In his nine seasons with the Bears, he coached 50 all-conference performers, four Honorable Mention All-Americans, and several Olympic Trial qualifiers ers, Olympic Trial finalists and two Olympic athletes. In the classroom his athletes collectively achieved 12 Academic All-America team awards, one fi rst-team Academic All-America award and several postgraduate scholarships. Prior to coaching at Brown, Kredich was the assistant men s swimming coach at Harvard from 1991-92. He also has served as an assistant women s swimming coach at Stanford (1990-91) and as a graduate assistant coach for the men s and women s swim teams at Duke (1998-90). As a standout backstroker at Duke, he garnered All-Atlantic Coast Conference and All- Academic honors and was a seven-time U.S. National qualifi er. Kredich received a B.A. in biology from Duke in 1988 and received his M.A. in teaching degree from Duke in 1990. A native of Durham, N.C., Kredich and his family reside in Knoxville. His wife Kimberley is a choral conductor, artist and advocate for children with disabilities. They have three sons: Benjamin, Miles and Coleman. 11

DAVE PARRINGTON Head Diving Coach 19th Season Now entering his 19th year as the men s and women s diving coach at the University of Tennessee, Dave Parrington has achieved unparalleled success coaching on the collegiate, national and international levels. In this past year Parrington made signifi - cant additions to a résumé full of accomplishments. He coached his 28th diver to an SEC Championship, judged the 2008 U.S. Olympic Diving Trials, helped select the 2008 U.S. Olympic Diving Team and, most signifi cantly, a scholarship was created in his name. The Dave Parrington Tennessee Diving Scholarship is a $250,000 scholarship endowment created as part of Head Football Coach Phillip Fulmer s $1 million donation to The Campaign for Tennessee. The announcement was made during Tennessee s offi cial dedication of the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center in August. The endowment will ensure a scholarship for a Tennessee diver for years to come. During the 2007-08 season, Lauren Le- Roy wrapped up a stellar career by becoming Parrington s 28th pupil to claim an SEC title, doing so on the three-meter board. LeRoy also earned her second consecutive All-American award by placing ninth on the one-meter board (301.20) at the NCAA Championships. She also competed at NCAAs on the three-meter and the platform, while recording eight fi rst-place fi n- ishes throughout the year. LeRoy was named SEC Diver of the Week on Oct. 22, while senior teammate Vicky Linnnell earned the award on Nov. 13. LeRoy ended her career with the UT record on the three-meter board (367.60) and as the No. 2 performer all-time on the onemeter board (321.30). Nine Lady Vol divers have acquired 37 All-America citations during Parrington s time at UT. During the 2006-07 season, he took Le- Roy to her fi rst NCAA Championships and Senior National Meet and guided her to 11 fi rst-place fi nishes, including a sweep of the one-meter and three-meter events at fi ve different meets. Her 15th-place fi nish from the three-meter board (276.10) at the NCAA Championships put her in the record books as the ninth Lady Vol to receive All-America honors under Parrington s tutelage. Another recent diver who compiled signifi cant accolades while at UT is Lauryn McCalley. McCalley earned All-America honors in three NCAA Championships. At the 2004 NCAAs, she picked up two certifi - cates, which brought her career-total to fi ve. She took sixth-place on the three-meter board and fi nished in 12th on the one-meter board. In 2003, the Georgia native placed fi fth on the one-meter at the 2003 NCAA Championships while notching sixth place on the three-meter. She was also seventh on the one-meter as a freshman the previous year and sixth on the three-meter. McCalley continued to experience success following her career, as she was named the 2005 NCAA Woman of the Year. The prestigious award is presented to an NCAA female athlete who exemplifi es athletic, academic and personal excellence. In addition to being a fi ve-time All-American, McCalley was named the Southeastern Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2005 with a 3.95 GPA, and served as UT s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president during the 2004-05 school year. Internationally, Parrington has traveled and served in coaching capacities for many international squads and events. In addition, to serving as a judge and a selector for USA Diving this past summer, Parrington has extensive experience coaching a variety of athletes in international competition as well as serving as the diving coach for his native Zimbabwe in the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games. He was named by USA Diving as one of the selectors for the USA Diving World Cup team which competed with much success in China in July 2006. In 2003, Parrington traveled to the 2003 FINA World Championships in Barcelona. As the coach of Zimbabwe, Parrington had the opportunity to coach former Vols Evan Stewart at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics and Gabi Chereches in 2000 for Romania in their quests for medals. Parrington coached Stewart to fi rst place at the 1994 World Championships and Shannon Roy to a sixth-place fi nish at the 2001 World Championships, both on the one-meter event. Stewart and Roy also each won gold at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on the one-meter and three-meter, respectively. In addition, Parrington led former Tennessee Volunteer Phil Jones to 11th place in the fi - nals on the three-meter at the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona. Earlier in the decade, Parrington tutored former Lady Vol Jaime Sanger through an incredible string of performances for the Big Orange. In 2003, he witnessed Sanger earn her third-consecutive SEC crown in the one-meter, while she placed second in that event at the NCAA Championships. During her time at Rocky Top, Sanger claimed two SEC Diver of the Year awards, three SEC titles, four All-America certifi cates, became a member of the U.S. Senior National Team

The 1995 season marked a fi rst for Parrington, as divers Bonner and Stewart were crowned national champions, making Parrington just the fourth diving coach in history to have men s and women s three-meter NCAA champions in the same season. Bonner also became the fi rst Lady Vol swimmer or diver to claim an NCAA title. On September 22, 2006, she was inducted into the Lady Vol Hall of Fame. The 1994, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001 SEC Men s Diving Coach of the Year and the 1997 and 2003 SEC Women s Diving Coach of the Year, Parrington joined the Lady Vol staff in 1990 from the University of Houston. While with the Cougars, he built a reputation as one of the nation s top diving coaches and earned Southwest Conference Women s Coach of the Year honors in 1990. In seven seasons as a coach at Houston, seven of his divers gained NCAA All-America honors. Since 1994, UT divers have captured one gold and one bronze medal at the World Championships, six NCAA titles, four U.S. Diving golds, six U.S. Diving synchronized gold medals, four Commonwealth Games medals (two of which were gold) and set two NCAA Championships records. In 1990, he served as head coach of the U.S. Junior Olympic team that traveled to Aachen, Germany. In 1997 he was one of three U.S. coaches who traveled to the World Cup in Mexico City, and he served as head coach of the U.S. Team at the FOX Sports Challenge in Brisbane, Australia. In 1999, Parrington served as the coach of the U.S. team at the Swedish Cup and Pan Am team as well as being team leader for the U.S. in the 2002 Canada Cup. He was also on the U.S. coaching staffs for the 2003 FINA/USA Grand Prix and the 2003 World Championships. The coach of eight junior national champions and 15 U.S. Senior National Team members, Parrington was the winner of the 1988-89 WHOSAM award, recognizing his commitment to excellence. Parrington was also the 1997 U.S. Diving Summer National Coaches Award for Excellence recipient. In addition, he has served USA Diving as a member of the U.S. Diving Safety Certifi cation, Judges Certifi cation committees, Olympic International committee, the Committee for Competitive Excellence, and most recently as a selector for the USA 2008 Olympic team. Parrington is a native of Rhodesia, now known as Zimbabwe. He competed on both the national diving and water polo teams, representing Zimbabwe in three-meter and platform diving at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. At the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center dedication in August, Parrington was presented with a scholarship endowment in his name by UT head football coach Phillip Fulmer and his family. 13

14 The Arndt Report Coached 2008 Olympic Silver medalist and 100m fly American Record Holder Christine Magnuson Coached 14 All-Americans to 79 certifi cates in three years at UT Athletes have set 10 new Lady Vol records, including new marks in all fi ve relays. Coached 10 All-Americans as head coach of men s and women s swimming team at Lewis University Captain and All-Big Ten swimmer at Michigan JEN ARNDT Assistant Swimming Coach Fourth Season In 2008, Jen Arndt helped lead the Lady Vols to their best NCAA Championships fi nish since 1989. Joining head swimming coach Matt Kredich is fourth-year assistant Jen Arndt. Kredich and Arndt are one of the most dynamic and innovative coaching duos in the country. Evidence of their efforts over the past three years have been seen in UT success on conference, national and international levels. After winning four Southeastern Conference titles, capturing SEC Swimmer of the Year and winning the U.S. Olympic Trials crown in the 100m butterfl y, Christine Magnuson became a breakout star at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Magnuson, who saw dramatic improvements in three years under Arndt and Kredich, won silver medals in the 100m fl y and 400-medley relay, setting American records in both events. In addition to Magnuson, six current UT swimmers and two recent Rocky Top graduates competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials this past summer. These performances came on the heels of another outstanding season for the Lady Vols. In their third season at the helm, Kredich and Arndt led UT to a 5-3 dual meet record, a fourth-place fi nish at the SEC Championships and an eighth-place fi nish at the NCAA Championships. Overall, thirteen school records fell during the 2007-08 season. The eighth-place fi nish at NCAAs was Tennessee s best national meet fi nish since 1989. The Lady Vols scored 179.50 points and set school records in the 400y free relay, 50y free and 100y fl y. Nine athletes took home 26 All-America certifi cates at the NCAA meet. At the 2008 SEC Championships, 13 school records fell and four swimmers, Magnuson, Michelle King, Brittany Nauta and Carly Mathes, earned fi rst-team All- SEC honors as UT scored 477 points to place fourth. The foursome combined to win the 200y free relay, while Magnuson captured top honors in the 50y free, 100y free and 100y fl y. In their second season in Knoxville, Kredich and Arndt guided UT through one of the toughest schedules in the country to a 4-4 dual meet record. Five UT records were broken at the 2007 SEC meet in Lexington, Ky., as Tennessee totaled 349.5 points for fi fth place. The 100y and 200y freestyles, as well as the 100y fl y records, fell at the hands of Magnuson. In addition, the Lady Vols set new 400y and 800y freestyle relay marks.
