Construction Competent Person Series Description: This series is designed to meet OSHA s competent person training requirements in four specific construction operations. OSHA standards require employers to identify a competent person in a variety regulations including Fall Prevention and Protection, Excavation and Trenching, Confined Space Entry, and Scaffolding. OSHA defines a competent person as one who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surrounding or working conditions, which are unsanitary hazardous, or dangerous to employees and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them. The series includes both classroom theory and practical onsite exercises in each session. Participants will earn a certification for each session completed. By combining the four sessions we can offer training at a reduced and more affordable cost. Individual course descriptions included. Who Should Attend: Training is intended for employees who have the responsibility for ensuring a safe, healthy and sanitary work environment. Construction Supervisors/Foreman Construction Managers/Superintendents Construction Company Owners Competent Person Series Completion Requirements: Participants are required to be present and actively participate in all learning activities including written exam and hands-on exercises to receive certifications. The presentations and materials are in English (Spanish courses are available upon request). Learning Aids: Guides and handouts will be provided at the start of each course. Participants should come prepared with a note pad and pen. We will be covering a great deal of information in a short period of time; your punctuality will be greatly appreciated. Fall Prevention and Protection: Participants will learn about the nature of common fall hazards in the workplace. Training includes an in-depth discussion on the use and operation of guardrail systems, personal fall arrest systems, safety net systems, warning line systems, safety monitoring systems, controlled access zones, and other fall protection to be used. Training covers correct procedures for erecting, maintaining, disassembling, maintenance, storage, and inspection of fall protection systems. This Fall Prevention and Protection Competent Person Training is based on the requirements of the OSHA Regulations, ANSI Z359.2, and industry standards. Who Should Attend: Required for participants who might be exposed to fall hazards or are responsible for the immediate supervision, implementation and monitoring of a managed fall protection program. Initial training and refresher training when the employer has reason to believe that any affected employee does not have the understanding and skills required to ensure safety. Attending participants must bring Hardhat, Safety Glasses, Work Gloves, Boots, Reflective Vest or Jacket and proper Work Clothing for participation in the operator practical evaluation exercise. Safety Equipment Recommended Attending participants should bring their personal fall protection systems equipment including; harness, lanyards, anchorage systems and other fall equipment for inspection and practical training.
Permit Required Confined Space Entry: Participants will be trained in depth to identify types of confined spaces; the specific risks and hazards of confined spaces, and emergency procedures so employee can perform duties assigned. Includes training on attendant, entrant, and entry supervisor duties. Participants will be trained on basic atmospheric testing procedures, general ventilation practices, and common entry procedures. What is a confined space: A confined space has the following characteristics: Its size and shape allow an employee to enter it, it has limited openings for participants to enter and exit, and it is not designed for continuous employee occupancy. Who Should Attend: Required for participants who enter or preform confined space work. Initial training required and refresher training required whenever workplace processes/procedures change. Includes: Confined Space Non-Entry Rescue Practical Activity Non-Entry Rescue Course Description: Training on performing non-entry confined space rescue. Participants will practice making confined space rescues by simulating rescue operations in which they remove manikins or actual persons from confined spaces. Who Should Attend: Required for participants that will be responsible for attendant duties. Initial training and annual practical and simulation refreshers are required. Attending participants shall bring Hardhat, Safety Glasses, Work Gloves, Boots, and proper work clothing for participation in the confined space practical entry exercise. Each workgroup shall bring fall protection, harness, tripod, hoist, or entry system, and working atmospheric monitor, and ventilation equipment.
Excavation and Trenching: The course is designed to assist participants in identifying and assessing potential and existing hazards inherent to working in or around excavations and trenches. Attendees will be familiarized with related regulatory requirements and the duties and responsibilities of the competent person at an excavation site. Participants will receive a certification of completion and a competent person card by actively participating in the course and demonstrating knowledge in the classroom and at the training site. What is an excavation or trench: An Excavation is any man-made cut, cavity, trench, or depression formed by earth removal. A Trench is a narrow excavation where the depth is greater than the width. Who Should Attend: Required for participants that are exposed to excavation hazards. Initial training and refresher training whenever processes, procedures or requirements change. Includes: Excavation and Trenching Field Exercise and Practical Activity Course Description: Construction site training on worker safety while performing excavation and trenching activities. Participants will create an excavation plan, conduct site hazard assessments, practice soil sampling techniques, and select and inspect protective systems for entry. Who Should Attend: The course is designed for participants that are required to be familiar with the role of the competent person. Initial training before associated job tasks and refresher training whenever processes, procedures or requirements change. Attending participants shall bring Hardhat, Safety Glasses, Work Gloves, Boots, Reflective Vest or Jacket and proper Work Clothing for participation in the excavation and trenching practical exercise. Each attending workgroup shall bring protective systems (shoring, shielding), working atmospheric monitor, and ventilation equipment.
Scaffold User and Erector Description: Attendees will learn about the general nature of hazards as these relate to the use and work on scaffolds. Course covers maximum intended load, load-carrying capacities, electrical hazards, fall hazards and falling object hazards in the work area, proper use of scaffolds, material handling on scaffolds, and the correct procedures for erecting, disassembling, moving, operating, repairing, inspecting, and maintaining scaffolding. Who Should Attend: Required for participants who perform work while on a scaffold, or those involved in erecting, disassembling, moving, operating, repairing, maintaining, or inspecting scaffolding to understand the procedures to control or minimize those hazards. Initial training required and refresher training required whenever workplace processes/procedures change, or the employer has reason to believe that an employee lacks the skill or understanding needed to ensure safety. Includes: Scaffolding Supervisor Training and Practical Activity Scaffold Supervisor Course Description: Course will teach attendees how to preplan scaffold construction to ensure proper loading and use of the scaffold design. Participants will learn how to determine the correct type of scaffold necessary for the job, determine the maximum load of the scaffold, how to assure a good foundation for the scaffold, and how to avoid electrical hazards. Who Should Attend: Employers are required to have a minimum of one employee onsite that is considered to be competent to recognize any hazards associated with the work in question. Recommended for participants looking to become involved in the scaffold selection, setup, and hazard avoidance on the construction site. Attending participants shall bring the following items: Hardhat, Safety Glasses, Work Gloves, Leather Work Footwear, Reflective Vest or Jacket, and proper work clothing for participation in the scaffolding practical exercises.
