Hiking, Biking & Beer Adventure There are two sides to an active beer tour activities and beer. We think adding activities to a typical tour of breweries is not only healthier but makes for a more local experience that highlights the region you are visiting. Our activities consist of hiking and biking in and around Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Each day we plan a different hike or bike ride, always with multiple options so you can take the easy route ( I had too much beer last night ) or the hard route ( I have to work off my next meal ). We also visit six different breweries in three states (Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming) in six days, planning unique interactive visits such as blind tastings, harvesting of hops, and a course on brewmaking with a head brewer. Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, and the surrounding areas are among some of the most beautiful places on earth and taking an active beer tour is a great way to experience the region. Each day you will build up a thirst that can only properly be quenched by a delicious, cold, regionally crafted brew from the tap at the local brewery. You don't have to be a beer expert or an athlete to enjoy this tour. You just need to be ready for some fun! DAY ONE............................... We meet at noon in downtown Bozeman if you arrive early, or at 12:30 PM at the Bozeman airport if you fly in that morning. After introductions we ll visit Montana State University s Hopyard to learn more about both hops and barley and actually have the chance to try our hand at harvesting. Next is a short hike on a local trail followed by happy hour at the Bozeman Brewing Company. Dinner tonight is at Montana Ale Works, which boasts over 40 Montana beers on tap. For those of you with energy remaining, we ve timed this tour to coincide with the annual Montana Brewers Festival where you can enjoy live music, beer from most of Montana s breweries, and fun. Accommodation: Magnuson Grand City Center, Bozeman, Montana DAY TWO............................... After breakfast at a local downtown café we depart for Big Sky, Montana where we will enjoy a short but scenic three-mile hike to a waterfall. You are on your own for lunch in the ski resort s town center and, in the afternoon, we ll mountain bike rolling trails through thick forest and mountain meadows for five to ten miles. The ride ends at the Lone Peak Brewery where we ll shuck the hops we harvested yesterday. The Lone Peak brewmaster will then use these in a current batch while sharing information about the process, flavors, and theories. Dinner tonight will be at the Cinnamon Lodge, where we will be staying, followed by a campfire on the banks of the Gallatin River. *If you are interested in fly fishing the Gallatin River on this day instead of hiking and biking, we can help you arrange a private guide and gear rental. Accommodation: Cinnamon Lodge, Big Sky, MT

DAY THREE............................. This morning we head into Idaho and Harriman State Park where we hike along and high above the Henry s Fork River. The hiking options today are three to eight miles of easy rolling terrain. Then it is on to Grand Teton Brewing in Victor, Idaho for post-hike beers and an educational course on beer making with Brewmaster Rob Mullin. A scenic drive over Teton Pass brings us to Jackson and our downtown Jackson hotel for the evening. Dinner is just a short walk away at the Snake River Brewpub where we ll have not only dinner, but a tour and tasting. Tonight you might want to explore Jackson s quaint downtown streets. Accommodation: The Lexington, Jackson, Wyoming DAY FOUR.............................. This morning s activity is biking, and the majestic mountains of Grand Teton National Park will tower above us as we bike along a paved pathway in the park. Today s mileage is eight to twelve miles, with the option of a short hike as well. After the ride relax and soak in the Teton vistas while you munch on a slice of gourmet pizza or a calzone at one of our favorite spots for lunch in the park. We then head to the country s first National Park, Yellowstone, for a short walk along the boardwalk among the geothermal features of West Thumb. Dinner tonight is at the Old Faithful Inn s Bear Den. After dinner we ll take an evening walk to watch Old Faithful Geyser erupt under the light of a full moon! Accommodation: Old Faithful Snow Lodge, Yellowstone National Park TRIP DETAILS 2011 DATES September 9-14 COST $1,700 per person $600 single supplement (single supplement is always optional; otherwise we will find you a roommate of the same gender) LOCATION The tour takes place in Yellowstone and Teton Country in the states of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE We ll meet you midday in Bozeman, Montana, which has its own airport, allowing you to fly in that morning. We finish in Billings, Montana on the last day, so you should get an open jaw ticket into Bozeman and out of Billings. Upon booking, we will send you a Pre-Departure Packet with information on how to travel. DAY FIVE............................... A short, one and a half mile hike to the top of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone s impressive Lower Falls allows for some great photo opportunities and a chance to stretch our legs before our scenic drive over Dunraven Pass and through Yellowstone s wildlifeladen Lamar Valley. Today we will likely have many animal sightings such as bison, bear, moose and elk. We ll stop for lunch in the small historic mining town of Cooke City, Montana, located just outside the Northeast entrance of the Park. From Cooke City we ll

drive the Beartooth All-American Road, the highest elevation road in the Northern Rockies. When we reach the crest it s time to get out and hop on our bikes (they ll be waiting for us at the top) for a twelve-mile downhill cruise into the town of Red Lodge you ll barely have to pedal. The small town of Red Lodge is home to Red Lodge Ales (and Zephyr Adventures!), where we will sample the local brews and then head to dinner at the Carbon County Steakhouse. Accommodation: Yodeler Motel, Red Lodge, MT DAY SIX................................... This morning after breakfast, we ll enjoy the fall colors on a twomile to four-mile hike. From there we drive to the Billings Airport, dropping off those flying out in the early afternoon. If you have a later flight or choose to extend your stay in Montana we ll have a tasting at the Yellowstone Brewing Company and lunch downtown, with a second airport drop off at 2:30pm. BREWERIES & ALE WORKS Bozeman Brewing Company, Bozeman, MT www.bozemanbrewing.com A locals favorite, featuring the Bozone Select, a light amber ale that has a medium malt body gently balanced by a hint of hops. Gr Ale Works, Bozeman, MT www.montanaaleworks.com Originally a warehouse owned by the railroad, the Ale Works building has a cool atmosphere, great food, and lots of local and regional beers on tap. Lone Peak Brewery, Big Sky, MT www.lonepeakbrewery.com A quiet brewery in the mountain meadow of Big Sky, brewing and serving great beer such as the Headplant Pale Ale, Buck Snort Porter, and Hippy Highway Oatmeal Stout. Grand Teton Brewing, Victor, ID www.grandtetonbrewing.com Situated at the base of the Teton Mountains, this was the first brewery in the Grand Teton region. Snake River Brewing, Jackson, WY www.snakeriverbrewing.com A downtown Jackson brewery serving beer and winning awards around the nation. Red Lodge Ales, Red Lodge, MT www.redlodgeales.com Sam knows his beer and the industry. It s easy to understand how this once small taproom is now growing into one of the region s larger breweries brewing and serving beers in its new LEED-certified brewery.

Yellowstone Valley Brewing, Billings, MT www.yellowstonevalleybrew.com Bring some vinyl and they ll play it for you while you kick back on a couch in the brewery and taste some of the region s finest.
