2018 Spring Learn to Row Informational Packet Hello! My name is Tamara Clayton. I am the Head Coach for the Tulsa Youth Rowing Association (TYRA); and I will be your primary contact for the upcoming Learn-to-Row (LTR) course. I am writing to provide you with important logistical information about the upcoming week, and to inform you of how practices will be run. We have a full schedule planned for all of the participants, and look forward to welcoming you to our program! LTR will piggyback our competitive program this week practices will be held and operated identically with the structure of our competitive practices. This is a great way for interests to see if they can properly balance rowing and school. It is our hope that upon completion of this week of training, participants will have a better understanding of the sport of rowing. We also hope that you will consider joining our Competitive Program (8 th -12 th grade) or being a member of our Recreational growth Program (7 th - 12 th grade)! Athletes wanting to join the Competitive Program in the spring are required to complete one of the following: a summer camp, a basic training/ltr course, or a growth session. More information about our Competitive and Recreational Programs will be provided throughout the week! If you have any questions about our programs from a parental perspective, please do not hesitate to contact our current board president: Adam Kupetsky president@okrowing.org. Financial questions can be directed to our treasurer - treasurer@okrowing.org Without any further ado, I ll send you on your way! Please review the following pages prior to your first day of LTR. YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE TWO FORMS COMPLETED IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR LEARN-TO-ROW COURSE! (If you have already successfully completed a swim test with us in the past, you need to only do it once. However, the USRowing Waiver needs to be updated every 12 months) 1. USRowing Waiver - Go to this link: https://membership.usrowing.org/individual/join - Enter your personal information to see if USRowing has a membership record for you on file. o Club or Team Name: Tulsa Youth Rowing Association (NOT Tulsa Rowing Club) o Team Code: 9QY36 - Membership Type: Basic Membership-Free (Admin. Fee $9.75) - Continue filling out the required information for your Profile (Step 2), Education (Step 3), and Compliance (Step 4) before proceeding to Check Out (Step 5). - Once successfully completed and the admin fee has been paid, the coaching staff is able to view your completed profile/waiver online. No need to print this document; however, please record your USRowing Membership ID# just in case we run into any issues. - Without this waiver, participants are not allowed to use our facilities or equipment. 2. Swim Test - A blank swim test form is attached at the end of this packet. - Please have the form completed prior to the start of practice on Tuesday, January 9. - The YMCA normally allows free swim tests at their facilities even if you are not a member. Call in advance and ask if a lifeguard will be available. COST $100 Paid in full at time of registration Includes one official TYRA practice T-shirt CLOTHING AND ATTIRE The best clothing to wear is TIGHT FITTING. Current athletes usually wear practice t-shirts and spandex shorts (basketball shorts and giant/baggy shirts will get caught in moveable parts and can result in tears or grease stains ruining that article of clothing or damaging the rowing equipment). Some of our athletes will wear loose shorts over their spandex bottoms during warm-up and stretching, and take the loose shorts off when it comes time to get into a boat or on a rowing machine. It will be important for you to bring running shoes and your own water bottle. Please do not forget a water bottle! There will be water fountains for refilling purposes if needed (at the beginning and end of each practice). TYRA does not support the use of shared water bottles.
DIRECTIONS TO THE TU ROWING TANK (on the TU Campus) The rowing tank is located in the Mabee Gymnasium building found at the 8 th and Florence intersection on the TU campus. This is building #82 on this PDF Campus Map. You can enter the building from any side. The actual rowing tank is located in the middle of the building. Once inside building #82, the entrance into the tank is labeled on a glass door (look for TULSA ROWING) by a huge trophy case. Hard to miss it! One of the coaches will try to stand in the hallway if someone does get lost. If TU is present, please do not enter the rowing room until a TYRA coach has given permission. GENERAL RULES FOR THE TU TANK (We will review these in person) First and foremost, we need to keep the mentality of keep it cleaner than when we arrived. We are TU s guests. As a college facility, TU may be showing possible high school recruits their facility at any given time. We do not want to leave a mess and present TU as unprofessional. Please do not use or climb on any workout equipment without prior consent from a TYRA coach. This is not only for safety purposes, but TYRA is not authorized to use certain TU equipment. Private Locker Rooms and Bathrooms can be found at the end of the hallway after entering the glass door titled TULSA ROWING. Personal belongings can be left here. Please do not leave personal items in the practice room, as it produces clutter. Cellphones, MP3 players, etc are NOT ALLOWED to be used during practice. These items tend to be a distraction to not only your fellow athletes, but to the coaching staff as well. DIRECTIONS TO THE TU BOATHOUSE (in Catoosa) The BH has no physical address to input into a GPS/maps program. If you do wish to use a GPS/maps program, only use google maps (iphone maps app will take you to the wrong location). Plug in: Rogers Landing Public Use Area or click on the link below: https://www.google.com/maps/place/rogers+landing+public+use+area/@32.2120413,- 95.7198751,16z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x87b658bbe99dc79f:0xee122b363180023f In addition to the link above, here are directions from the TU campus to their BH in Catoosa: o Go North on Harvard o Take I-244 East, which turns into I-44 East o Exit 241 onto 66 East toward Catoosa/Claremore o Stay on 66 East for approximately 4 miles. You will pass Reasor s, the Blue Whale, and Molly s Landing. o After crossing a small channel of the Verdigris River (the first giant truss bridge after the blue whale and immediately after Molly s Landing), turn right into Roger s Point Park. o Follow the road straight toward the J. Bird Sr. Shell Nest (the official TU name of their BH).
GENERAL RULES FOR THE TU BOATHOUSE (We will review these in person) No speeding! Please keep it under 10mph due to the possibility of boat/people traffic. Parking (refer to picture below). Again, TU has graciously allowed us to use their BH. With this said, let s continue to abide by the keep it cleaner than when we arrived mentality. Always throw away your trash/disposable water bottles! If TU is having a practice at the same time as our scheduled practice, the TU coaching staff has requested that all TYRA athletes gather and talk outside of the boathouse. TU has had issues with trying to communicate their practice plan to their athletes with TYRA talking in the background. There are cubbies at the front for phones, keys, water bottles, etc. If you bring a backpack or larger item, please leave them in the bathrooms located in the back of the BH. This will prevent any pile-ups of items that may become a tripping hazard. Males: TU is an all-female rowing team. They have two bathroom facilities in the back of the boathouse. ALWAYS USE THE BATHROOM ON THE RIGHT when facing the two doors! This is marked as a unisex/family bathroom. If TU is present, please lock the main bathroom door to prevent female TU athletes from entering. They are told to only use the female facilities when we are present, but there may be one or two who might forget. If you have to change, please use the locked stalls within the bathroom. Cellphones, MP3 players, etc are NOT ALLOWED to be used during practice. These items tend to be a distraction to not only your fellow campers, but to the coaching staff as well. They can also get damaged by the water (athletes have dropped items into the river many times).
DIRECTIONS TO SANDUSKY AVENUE CHRISTIAN CHURCH Our indoor land practices are generally held at the Sandusky Gymnasium. 1101 S Sandusky Ave Tulsa, OK 74112 There is a giant parking lot to the east of the complex (S Toledo Ave divides the facilities from the parking lot). Please park here. Entrance to the gym is via double metal doors on the far eastern side of the complex (the doors closest to the parking lot mentioned above). Do not attempt to enter through any glass doors, as they will be locked! There are a few steps leading down to the metal gym doors, and we will try to keep these doors propped open on the first day. Athletes can be picked up or dropped off in front of these doors. We only ask that you drive with caution in this area. GENERAL RULES FOR SANDUSKY Again, this facility is not owned by TYRA. This is an active church that allows TYRA to use its facilities. Please keep it cleaner than how you found it. This facility is large. Downstairs is a basketball court and personal items can be left along a wall. TYRA s indoor rowing machines are located on the mezzanine upstairs. Please do not be tempted to pick up any equipment and play with it without first receiving permission from a TYRA coach. You will find basketballs, volleyballs, hockey sticks, etc. Athletes are not allowed in any storage closet, the kitchen, or anywhere pertaining to the stage area (on stage, behind the curtains, backstage, etc). These doors are kept locked, but in the event that they are not, I wanted to make sure no one goes exploring where they are not allowed. WEATHER CONSIDERATIONS If we have to change the location of a practice or cancel practice because of the weather, we will send out an email to the registered addresses that you have provided. If you would like to include an additional email, please email me as well. We can row if it is raining as long as there is no lightning, debris in the river, or fast current. Not saying that we will, but know it is a possibility. If this is the case, bring a towel to practice or a change of clothes for your ride home. Practice changes are typically done by 12:00pm noon on the given day. If you are unsure, feel free to call/text/email Coach Tamara Clayton.
PARENT ACCOMODATIONS/VIEWING Day #1 (TU Tank) This will be our Open House and official Bring a Friend to Rowing Day. It is a free day to allow interests to come and see if rowing is a right fit for them. Our entire competitive team and competitive coaching staff will be present. We will have physical waivers on hand for those who may not have filled out their USRowing Waiver as stated above (this is temporary and will not suffice after 24hrs). Athletes will use Concept 2 indoor rowing machines and the indoor rowing tank. Day #2 (TU Boathouse). A tour of the boathouse will be given, and proper rowing terminology and safety procedures will be taught. If all runs smoothly, we will carry a boat down to the dock and learn how to make individual adjustments for your seat (based on height and flexibility). We will not go out and row today. We do not mind if parents want to stick around and learn as well, we just ask that you stay off in the distance and allow your child to mingle with the athletes. Communication is big in rowing! Parents also like to take pictures of the kids carrying the boat down to the dock for their first time. Remaining days at Sandusky These practices will generally be fitness and technique days. We will use Concept 2 indoor rowing machines and additional activities such as body circuits, team building exercises, running, or games.
