& -H Balanced Bellows type A high capacity Safety-Relief Valve, but developed especially for services where the valve must operate under conditions of built-up or superimposed back pressure due being connected a closed blowdown system, and for those services where severe corrosion or fouling of working parts can be anticipated. The bellows subassembly is the only construction difference between style and valves and conversions from one style the other are simple. Bellows Style balanced bellows valve -H Open Bonnet type Style -H with open bonnet and Type C regular lifting lever is available as an option for ASME Section VIII steam applications. Only the bonnet need be changed convert a Style Type C Style -H. With the open bonnet feature, carbon steel spring material can be used +343 C (+650F). Style -H open bonnet valve 4

JLT & O-Ring JLT Liquid Trim Style JLT standard for liquid service Full lift and rated capacity at 10% overpressure with stable operation from a pressure relief valve specifically designed for liquid service. High Coefficient of Discharge The JLT Liquid trim construction has a high coefficient of discharge. Generally a smaller JLT orifice size may be selected than that of a conventional pressure relief valve sized for the same application. Smaller orifice sizes mean reduced valve and related piping costs. High Capacity at 10% Overpressure Published valve capacities are based on capacity certification tests performed at 10% overpressure. This eliminates the need use the traditional overpressure derating facr based on 25% overpressure is based on the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code that permits pressure in a vessel rise 10% above the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) of the vessel during an overpressure excursion. Seat tightness-metal--metal seats Pressure relief valve seat tightness Metal--Metal seat and soft seat As system pressure approaches the valve set pressure, the differential force tending hold the seats in contact is diminished. Consequently, obtain an acceptable degree of tightness capability, the valve must be designed and built with a high level of quality. MOTOYAMA pressure relief valves are carefully engineered and manufactures ti provide those features essential for good valve performance and continuous long term protection. The inherent high degree of seat tightness found in MOTOYAMA pressure relief valves is possible due the following design features. 1. Positive alignment of the seats through generous guiding and ball joints. 2. Minimum disrtion as a result of full nozzle construction and thermally balanced disc design. 3. Excellent flatness and surface finish of the seating surfaces by precision machining and cusm lapping. Cleanliness of the system and proper installation of the valve are also essential for good seat tightness. Definition Ambiguous terms such as "bubble tight", "drop tight", "zero leakage" and "commercial tightness" have been used in the past. Since these terms were used without uniform definition, they lacked true practical meaning. Now with the adoption of a standard that defines the terminology used describe pressure relief devices (ASME Performance Test Code PTC-25.3), and the adoption of a standard describing a method of determining seat tightness of relief valves (API Standard 527), there should exist a degree of uniformity throughout the industry. "Commercial" Seat Tightness Standard (API Standard 527) The following API Standard of "commercial" tightness has been adopted by industry and users in order clarify testing methods and tightness standards for the sake of uniformity. It applies pressure relief valves. The API Standard is as follows: Scope: This standard describes a method of determining seat tightness of pressure relief valves as covered in API Standard 527 Seat Tightness of Pressure Relief Valves. The maximum acceptable leakage rates are defined for commercial pressure relief valves with, metal--metal and soft neats for set pressures up 0 psig (414 barg). If greater tightness is required it can be supplied but must be specified on the purchase order or inquiry. See page 6 for O-Ring soft seat pressure-temperature limits. Test Apparatus A typical test arrangement for determining seat tightness for pressure relief valves is shown in Fig.1. Leakage measurement shall be made with use of a 5/16 in. (7.93 mm) OD tubing with 0.035 in. (.88 mm) wall. The tube end shall be cut square and smooth. It shall be parallel and 1/2 in. (12.7 mm) below the surface of the water A clamp type seat leak apparatus is available from Crosby. Contact the facry. Tightness Standard The leakage rate in bubbles per minute shall not exceed the values indicated in Table 1 below. For soft seated valves there shall be no leakage for one minute (zero bubbles for one minute) Set Pressure psig (barg) 15-1000 (-68.9) 0 (103.4) 2000 (137.9) 2500 (172.4) 0 (206.8) 4000 (275.8) 5000 (344.8) 0 (413.7) Table 1 Effective Orifice Sizes 0.307 in. 2 and Smaller MAX. Bubbles Per Minute Maximum Seat Leakage Rate Metal Seated Pressure Relief Valves MOTOYAMA Seat Tightness Standard- Water Service Valves(Style JLT) MOTOYAMA pressure relief valves are checked for seat tightness by a quantitative seat leakage test. All of the test fluid passing through an assembled valve is collected and measured under the following test conditions: 1. The inlet pressure is adjusted a test pressure which is 90% of the "Cold Differential Test Pressure". Valves set below 50 psig (3.44 barg) are tested at 5 psig (.34 barg) below the cold differential test pressure. 2. The seat leak pressure is maintained for a period of not less than ten minutes. Allowable Leak Rate The maximum allowable leakage rate should not exceed 10 cubic centimeters per hour per inch of diameter of nominal valve inlet size. For nominal valve sizes of 1 inch(25.4 mm) or less the leakage rate shall not exceed 10 cubic centimeters per hour. For soft seated valves there shall be no leakage for one minute. 20 30 40 50 60 80 100 100 Approximate Leakage Rate Per 24 Hours Standard Cubic Feet 0.30 0.45 0.60 0.75 0.90 1.20 1.50 1.50 Standard Cubic Meters 0.0085 0.013 0.017 0.021 0.026 0.034 0.043 0.043 Procedure With the valve mounted vertically, as shown in Fig. 1, the leakage rate in bubbles per minute shall be determined with pressure at the valve inlet held at 90 percent of the cold differential test pressure, except for valves set at 50 psig (3.44 barg) or below, in which case the pressure shall be held at 5 psig (.34 barg) below the cold differential test pressure. The test pressure shall be applied for a minimum of 1 minute for valves of inlet sizes through 2 in. (50.8 mm); 2 minutes for sizes 2-1/2, 3 and 4 in. (63.5, 76.2 and 101.6 mm); 5 minutes for sizes 6 in. and 8 in. (152.4 and 203.2 mm). Air at approximately atmospheric temperature shall be used as the pressure midium. 38

Valve installation Srage Relief valves are often on hand at the job site months before they are actually installed. Unless they are properly sred and protected their performance may be affected injuriously. Roughness in handling may damage flanges or cause misalignment of the valve parts. It is best leave valves in shipment cases, sre them in a dry place and give them a protective covering until they are be used. Installation Piping The valve should be mounted vertically in an upright position either directly on a nozzle from the pressure vessel or on a short connection fitting that provides direct and unobstructed flow between the vessel and the valve Installing a pressure relief valve in other than this recommended position might adversely affect its operations. Where rounded or beveled approaches cannot be provided ahead of the valve it is recommended that one size large riser or fitting be used. A valve should never be installed on a fitting having a smaller inside diameter than the inlet connection of the valve. Compliance with the above recommendations will assure clean positive valve operation. Many valves are damaged when first placed in service because of failure clean the connections properly when installed. Both the valve inlet and the vessel and/or line on which the valve is mounted must be thoroughly cleaned of all foreign material. The inlet connection bolts or studs should be drawn down evenly avoid straining the valve body with possible disrtion of the nozzle flange or base. The design and analysis of the inlet piping for a pressure relief station must include all of the valve operating forces (reaction forces) as well as the installation loads and forces. Outlet Piping Discharge piping should be simple and direct. Where possible a short vertical pipe discharging in the atmosphere is the most desirable type of outlet piping, and affords little trouble. (See illustration.) However, if this is impractical and the discharge must be piped some definite place, the precautions listed below should be carefully considered. All Valves: 1. MOTOYAMA valves are designed with reinforced inlet necks minimize effects of discharge piping loads. However, regardless of this reinforcement, discharge piping should be designed for minimum load on the valve under all conditions of valve operation. 2. Expansion joints or large radius bends of proper design and cold spring should be provided prevent excessive strain on the valve body under normal operating conditions. An excessive expansion load is a continuous source of trouble in improperly designed installations. (See illustration below.) 3. The piping should be anchored prevent any swaying or vibration while the valve is discharging. 4. Where possible, open drains should be provided prevent any accumulation of corrosive media in the valve body. Conventional Valves 5. When two or more valves are installed discharge in a common header the discharge pressure due the opening of one (or more) valve(s) may affect the opening pressure of the remaining valves in the system. 5a Closed Top Valves With Bonnets NOT VENTED The discharge line pressure of these valves will increase the opening pressure by the amount (p.s.i.) of the discharge pressure. 5b Closed Top Valves With Bonnets VENTED The set pressure of the remaining valves in the system will be reduced by the amount(p.s.i.) of the discharge pressure. Where either of the above conditions are unacceptable the use of Style Balanced Bellows valves as described below is recommended. Note: Conventional Valves with vented bonnets are not suitable for continuous back pressure. Bellows Valves 5c The Style Balanced Bellows Safety-Relief valve is particularly adapted installations where two or more relief valves must be vented in a closed exhaust system resulting in variable back pressures which would affect the performance of a conventional type relief valve. The metal bellows used in Style is so designed that the effective area of the bellows is equivalent that of the valve seat. Because of this balanced area design, back pressure surges, whether constant or variable, do not adversely affect the performance of the valve. These valves are regularly furnished with atmospheric vents from the bonnet. DISCHARGE PIPE Recommended Installation Discharging Atmosphere; Piping Direct as above or as in other illustration. Recommended Installation Outlet Pipe Designed for Minimum Strain on Valve; Piping Direct as above or as in other illustration. 39

Flanges and flange facing Dimensions of flanges conform current ASME (ANSI) standards. On full nozzle valve inlets, however the thicknesses are greater than the minimum required by ASME (ANSI) standards. Dimension X shown opposite should be used determine bolt length. Dimension X remains the same for raised face or ring joint flanges and is found on pages 10 through 36. All flange facings are finished with spiral serration. Concentric serration finish are optional. Flange facings on valves for marine or Navy use must follow government specifications. Drilling of inlet and outlet flange holes straddle the valve center line. and outlet flanges are spot faced on back for stud nuts. Center-face dimensions are Subject lerance of ±1/16"(1.5 mm) for valves through 4" inlet size and ±1/8"(3.2 mm) for valves with inlet size larger than 4". In addition standard raised face or ring joint flanges, ngue and groove or other facings are optionally available. 40
