Northwestern made its first Big Ten Tournament appearance since 2001 current head coach Jenny Haigh s first season at the Wildcat helm. NU set a program record by playing eight overtime games, going 3-3-2 in those contests. NU went 8-1-2 at home this season, including a 5-0-1 mark in Big Ten play; since the Wildcats home park was renamed from Lakeside Field to Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex they are 13-3-3. Three players Kelsey Hans (7), Ashleigh Garmon (4) and Tabitha Lowey (3) tied or broke the school record for Big Ten goals in a season. Wildcats Enjoy Successful Campaign in 2004 The Season Recap The 2004 campaign proved to be a successful one for a youthful women s soccer team, which advanced to the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 2001 on the strength of its best conference record since 1998. Bolstered by an unbeaten home slate, the Wildcats went 5-4-1 in Big Ten play, just the second time in the program s 11-year history the Cats posted a winning conference record. Overall, NU went 8-1-2 on the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex pitch; in fact, since the field s name was changed from Lakeside Field to the Thomas Complex, the Cats are 13-3-3. Northwestern received the fifth seed in the Big Ten Tournament, but fell to Illinois in the first round and was unable to come up with an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. Anytime you can make solid progress increasing your record while maintaining a strong schedule, earning a Big Ten berth you know that you have momentum going in the right direction, said NU head coach Jenny Haigh. That is what we accomplished this year; we created more momentum for our program, which was already moving in the right direction. I am really pleased with the group that is coming back, she continued. We will be experienced; and these women have a high set of expectations and are willing to set their sights on the next big thing for this program. The surprise of the season had to be freshman sensation Kelsey Hans (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville). The forward set the school record for goals in a season with 15, eclipsing by one the standard set by current Wildcat assistant coach Stephanie Erickson. In addition, Hans set school marks for goals (7) and points (15) in Big Ten play en route to garnering second-team All-Big Ten as well as a spot on the Big Ten s All-Freshman Team. Kelsey had a good year, said Haigh. She showed that she can really impact a game with her explosive ability, air game, and strength. We are excited to continue to work with her, because we think she will only get better and that is exciting. Having a consistent scorer was huge toward our success. Hans was joined on the All-Big Ten second team by sophomore midfielder Shannon Schneeman (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall). Schneeman established a record by scoring four times in NU s early 5-1 win over Colorado College, and also finished second in the conference with five Big Ten assists. Northwestern s other second-team All-Big Ten honoree was sophomore goalkeeper Whitney Jones (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West), who had a 1.28 goals-against average for the season and came up big in some of NU s best wins this season. Kelly Sitkowski (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Conant) also made it to the Big Ten s All-Freshman Team. Northwestern set a record this season by playing eight overtime matches, going 3-3-2. Senior defender Carolyn Hack (Downers Grove, Ill./North) proved to have a flair for the dramatic, as both of her goals this season were OT match-winners. Hans was also named one of 12 finalists for National Freshman of the Year by Soccer Buzz. Sophomores Shannon Schneeman and goalkeeper Whitney Jones joined Hans as second-team All-Big Ten honorees. Freshman midfielder/defender Kelly Sitkowski joined Hans on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. At 5-4-1, NU finished one win shy of the school record for Big Ten victories (6-3-0, set in 1998). NU finished with a winning record in the conference for the second time in history (also 1998). NU went 5-0-1 at home against Big Ten opponents, the second time the Cats went unbeaten at home in conference play (4-0-0 in 1998). NU shut out three Big Ten opponents (Iowa, Indiana, Illinois), a first since the 1997 team also shut out three conference foes. NU scored 19 Big Ten goals, the second-best total in history (21 in 1997). NU allowed 12 Big Ten goals, the fewest since 2001 (10) and the thirdfewest in the five years of the conference s 10-match schedule. In the last eight matches of the Big Ten season, NU allowed just six goals and had a goals-against average of 0.71; only Ohio State scored more than once against the Cats during that stretch, and the Buckeyes needed overtime to do it. NU had a conference goal differential of +7 (19-12), tied for the best in school history (also 1997, 21-14). Freshman Kelsey Hans set NU records for Big Ten goals (7) and points (15) in one season. Ashleigh Garmon (4 goals) and Tabitha Lowey (3) also broke and tied the previous school record for Big Ten goals, respectively. NU had eight goalscorers in Big Ten play this year, and 13 players tallied at least one point. Sophomore Shannon Schneeman a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree tied the NU record for Big Ten assists in a season (5). 2004 HONORS Second Team All-Big Ten Kelsey Hans Whitney Jones (GK) Shannon Schneeman SoccerBuzz National Rookie of the Year finalist (1 of 12) Kelsey Hans Big Ten All-Freshman Team Kelsey Hans Kelly Sitkowski Big Ten All-Tournament Team Shannon Schneeman CoSIDA Academic All-District Shannon Schneeman (2nd team) Academic All-Big Ten Tori Bohannon Ashleigh Germon Leslie Gittings Anne Helm Whitney Jones Julie Lipinski Tabitha Lowey Molly Maxfield Lindsey Veris Katie Wright

NU had a winning record for the fourth time in the program s 11-year history. NU had the fourth double-digit win season in its history (16 wins in 1998, 13 in 1996, 12 in 1997). Both of the aforementioned stats occured for the first time in Jenny Haigh s four years as head coach. NU went 8-1-2 at home this season, its third-best home record in history (8-0-1 in 1998, 9-1-0 in 1997); since the Wildcats field was renamed from Lakeside Field to the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex, they are 13-3-3. NU played eight overtime matches this season, a program record; the Cats were 3-3-2 in those matches, including a 2-1-1 mark in four Big Ten draws. All three OT match-winners this season were scored by seniors. NU went 1-4-1 this season against ranked teams; the win came in overtime against Wisconsin, and the tie came during the regular season against Illinois. NU scored 40 goals this season, the fourth-best season in that category in the program s history (52 in 1997, 49 in 1996, 47 in 1998). BIG TEN STANDINGS Big Ten Overall W-L-T Pts. W-L-T Pct. Top eight make Big Ten Tournament. THE COOL STUFF Of NU s 40 goals, 25 came from freshmen or sophomores. NU was shut out by just two teams this season, Illinois (twice) and Penn State (once); as a result, the Cats tied a school mark for the fewest times being shut out in a season. The other NU team that finished with three blankings was the 1998 squad. NU outscored opponents 40-27 this season, its best goal differential (+13) since 1998 (47-26, +21). NU cut down its goals allowed from 31 last year to 27 (22 during the regular season) this year despite losing a two-time first-team All-Big Ten defender to graduation (Molly Greene) and another two-time first-team All-Big Ten midfielder (Aileen Guiney). After allowing three goals to both Michigan and Michigan State during the first Big Ten weekend of the season, NU allowed only three of its last 12 opponents to score more than once (Ohio State scored twice on 10/8, Illinois State scored twice on 10/24). Freshman forward Kelsey Hans had 15 goals, the NU record for a single season; the old record of 14 was set by current Wildcat assistant coach Stephanie Erickson in 1996. Hans had 32 points this season, second on NU s single-season list; the record is 35, set by Erickson in 1996 (14 goals, 7 assists). NU had four players with five or more goals Hans, Ashleigh Garmon, Tabitha Lowey and Shannon Schneeman; that is a first since the 1998 team had five players accomplish the feat. Hans scored in two straight matches and three of the last four during the regular season. Garmon had goals in three of NU s last five regular-season matches. SINGLE-SEASON LISTS GOALS 1.
