Welcome to Openwater Horten - Moss 10.000m 8. July 2017 Dear swimmers, friends and family! Congratulations to your spot at the OW Horten-Moss, with a 10k open water swim. In a couple of days, you will be swimming the most classic open water distance in Norway. First time swum in 1958 with five locals. The crossing time was 3 hours and 23 minutes. The record has been challenged many times since then. The record is now at 2 hours and 03 minutes by Knut Ivan Rasmussen. Anne Grete Haugan is the female record holder of 2 hours and 20minutes. Openwater swimmers believe that they can do the 10.000 meters crossing in less than 2 hours. Please make sure that you read the following information carefully as this is the final race manual. Mandatory prerace meeting will be held at the outside of the registration tent at 06:40. Please note it is essential to be there to start the race. Registration is open from 05:30 hrs. 2. Course condition report: At the race brief, we will give you the latest forecast with water temperature, air temperature, currents, surf, chops, and status on the jellyfishes if any. As per now we have 18 degrees water temperature and you can expect around 17-19 degrees on race day. The long-term weather report says calm winds from north-northeast and sunny conditions. Please mind our latest current forecast Friday afternoon. 3. One bag per swimmer will be handled at the start and returned to you at the finish line in Moss. Baggage will go in a van. Make sure you handle your bag yourself if any. THE RACE The 2017 race course is an epic swim crossing in the Oslofjord. We have one dedicated energy station along the course, and one cutoff at Jeløya (Stalsberget) within 2hrs and 15 min from start. The distance is about 5500m to boat #1 The Boat is marked with a flag and will be 200-300meters outside of Jeløya as marked. 3 of 13
If you know that you will bring along a boat/kayak that will follow the crossing to Moss, please let us know as early as possible. NEW Start procedures: In the 2017 race we will have 2 wave starts. The first group of swimmers will start 0715. If you plan to finish your swim at more than 3 hours and 20minutes please start in wave #1. Your average 100m speed will be more than 2.00min/100m. Wave #2 will start at 0745 and estimated finish should be less than 3hours and 20min. Ie. Less than 2.00min/100m swim speed. To waves will be more compact towards the finish line in Moss. Please give us a notice before Friday 7 th July by email with ref to start wave group. info@swimrun.no PLEASE REMEMBER to choose your wave position to INFO@swimrun.no IMPORTANT NOTICE: You need to walk through two beach flag and timing before you enter the water. Please state your name and number. MANDATORY EQUIPMENT: Mandatory equipment that the organization will supply Swimcap must be worn visible during the swim GPS tracker Timing chip PLEASE have our own whistle hooked at your wetsuit You are responsible to bring your own whistle. GPS Tracking / timing Racetracker Racetracker provides the GPS tracking at this event. Your friends and family can enjoy the race at our website. This is a realtime GPS tracking 4 of 13
and it is important that you carry your tracker in your swimcap during the swimcrossing. Together with the GPS Tracker, you will be wearing a timing chip. This is to ensure correct timing. Please return GPS and timing chip after finishing. Do not lose your timing chip/gps. It will not function if placed inside the wetsuit. The device will only work when placed in your swimcap. The GPS device and timing chip is mandatory equipment. Proposed equipment: Swimming wetsuit is strongly recommended for the swim crossing The wetsuit should not be thicker than 5-6 mm. A gel or two inside your wetsuit arm Neopren cap if you are not happy with 17-18 degrees in the water. Equipment for flotation purposes is not allowed ie pullbouy You can use a signal buoy for safety reason Neoprene sock is ok Swim gloves is not allowed 5 of 13
TRAFFIC AND SAFETY: We are working with the Coastal Administration and Tjøme Radio. (Maritime Radio) The Kiel ferry will pass inbound before you are half way to Jeløya. There will be kayaks and small boats to take care of you both left and right. A kayak will be around 25m in front of the lead group. One Kayak will follow the slowest swimmers together with other boats. You can bring your own support kayak. It is important to be at the pre-race kayak meeting at 0620 hrs. at the registration in Horten, Fyllinga WITHDRAWALS: If you withdraw from the race at any point in time after the prerace meeting, you are obliged to inform the Race Office immediately by calling +47 40004858. If you withdraw during the race inform your nearest boat, kayak or aid station. CUTOFF: You need to be at south Jeløy (1. boat) at 0930. This is our first and only cutoff. If you should fail to reach Jeløy by 2hours and 15 min, we need to pick you up by boat. WEATHER Yes, it will be! We have had some nice days now and this means that the current water temperatures are quite warm and around 17-18 degrees. It can change very quickly and you should plan for racing in heavy rain and water temp at 16 degrees. Air temperatures could be between 13-18 degrees C. Do not forget to eat, drink and sleep to perform! This is a 100% though competition. Believe us!!! Latest weather forecast, water temperature and tidewater will be presented at our prerace meeting. Weather conditions can change rapidly and unexpectedly. The Race director and the staff and volunteers will report and maintain a constant state of awareness as to all conditions that may affect the event. You need to pass each chekpoint. 1. Jeløya. 2. Stalsbergt. 3. Finishline PLEASE NOTE due to special weather conditions we may have to divert from our course or delay or postpone the start. Safety first. This is a worst-case scenario. ENERGY ON THE COURSE You need to plan your race nutrition carefully. As always, we work with 6 of 13
Fresubin Energy and in addition we have CYL Airnergy, Coke water and gel. This is to make sure that you maximize your performance throughout the whole race and especially during the FINAL 2000m. Take your time at the aid station. HORTEN-MOSS OPEN WATER COURSE It has been a lot of work with local government and the Traffic Central to ensure an epic swim course for you and your teammates. Swim together if you find some others pace. Is both social and even safer. Section 1: Fyllinga Marina to Jeløya The start line will be at the Lighthouse in Fyllinga Marina. The line will be marked with to beachflags. Take it easy the first 200-300 meters and get your diesel engine up and running. Start signal will be a horn pushed 3 times. We will count down from 5 min, 3 min, 2min, 1 min and finally last 5 seconds. Head towards Jeløy straight EAST. Distance is 5500m to the first boat / bouy. Keep in mind that you need to pass the boat at your right. It s not allowed to pass the energy boat/buoy at your left. This is an easy swim and you may be corrected to check your course by our boats or kayaks. We expect an outbound current / tidewater. The water will flow outbound Oslofjord. The tidewater will turn around 12:00hrs. Please have in mind that we can have local surface currents as well. Aim often, and swim the shortest way to Jeløya. Updates on local surface current will be given Friday and Saturday morning. Due to this tide predictions aim north of Jeløya. At any circumstances, do not swim together with the ferries 7 of 13
Current / tidewater Section 2: - Stalsberget to Reiertangen Still a real open water challenge with an outbound current. You will have Jeløya at your left all the way to Moss. If you have it on your right, you are swimming in the wrong direction! Always sight for the next peninsula. At your left. 8 of 13
Section 3: Reiertangen Moss Sjøbad Finishline Keep up your good speed! Its only 2000m to the finish line. You are almost there. You may have some tidewater at your front the last 2000m. Stay strong! Landside on your left and do not try to enter the first or second Marina. The finish line is straight ahead and aim for a small lighthouse. You cannot miss the finish line. Otherwise our boats and kayaks will guide you. 9 of 13
Finish line! Be aware of possible front tide water! After you have crossed the finish line it is a mandatory finisher picture in front of the finisher arc. At 1230hrs we will have a price ceremony at Moss Sjøbad (Finishline) 10 of 13

Finishline Under certain circumstances the Race Director may be required to deviate from the race rules and guidelines to ensure a safe race or to award true sportsmanship The 10-kilometer swim is swimming s equivalent of the marathon run. In track, the event is moved out of the confined space of the track stadium and out onto the open road. In open water swimming, the event is moved from the controlled environment of the pool to the relatively uncontrolled open water venue. For the elite athletes, a 10-kilometer marathon swim and marathon run are roughly equivalent in time approximately 2 hours. Stay focused and enjoy the nature! 11 of 13
