Spencer Stadium Meet Al Schmidt Regarded and respected nationwide as an authority on endurance running and training, Al Schmidt enters his 21st season at the helm of the Mississippi State s men s and women s track teams. Since his hiring on Oct. 22, 1988, Schmidt has parlayed his 37 years of collegiate coaching experience into many individual and team accomplishments for MSU, Schmidt both on and off of the track. In his previous 20 seasons, Schmidt has produced 33 All- Americans and 35 SEC champions. In 2008, Schmidt coached two athletes to become SEC Champions. Marrissa Harris won the heptathlon with a school record of 5,600 points. Jamil Hubbard won the 400- meter SEC title. During the SEC Outdoor Meet, 14 athletes qualified for the NCAA Regional Meet and 10 athletes scored in their events. The men placed eighth and the women placed 11th. LAST YEAR S SHOWING IN PHILLY Mississippi State men s and women s track teams delivered some of their best performances of the season last year at the 2008 Penn Relays. The week at Franklin Field was highlighted by the Lady Bulldogs advancing to the Championship of America final in the 4x200-meter relays. This was the second time in school history MSU had a women s relay in the prestigious final round. Along with the women s 4x200, the men s 4x200- and 4x400-meter relays advanced to the Championship of America section. The women s team of Bridgett Rose, Priscilla Gaines, Gabriel Dillon and Marrissa Harris entered the final with the eighth fastest time, 1:35.77. They stayed on pace running 1:38.09 in the finals to remain in eighth place. O Neal Wilder, Jamil Hubbard, John Bailey and Kendall May won their preliminary heat of the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:23.05 and finished third in the final. The foursome of Bailey, Hubbard, Chris Woods and Wilder posted regional qualifying marks in the 4x400-meter relay final, running 3:09.03 to finish fourth. In individual events, Harris posted a regional qualifying and MSU second all-time jump of 20 feet, 4.5 inches in the long jump to finish second. Harris also broke her own 100-meter hurdle record, running 13.44 seconds to head into the events final ranked ninth. DOGS, LADY DOGS RANKED The Bulldogs enter the Penn Relays ranked No. 32 in this week s USTFCCCA polls, while the Lady Bulldogs were ranked No. 43. BULLDOGS, LADY BULLDOGS COMPETE IN PRESTIGIOUS PENN RELAYS THIS WEEK Mississippi State travels to Philadelphia, Pa., this week to compete in the annual Penn Relays, an event that always attracts the top teams and athletes from across the country. Competition begins on Thursday, April 23 and concludes on Saturday, April 25. It s the first of the final two warmups for the SEC Championships in mid-may for MSU, which is coming off a successful weekend at Auburn where three firstplace finishes were posted. After the Penn Relays, MSU returns to Oxford for the Ole Miss Open. MSU TRACK TEAMS HAVE 29 REGIONAL QUALIFYING MARKS MSU men s and women s track and field team already has 29 Mideast Regional Qualifying marks logged in with only half of the outdoor season completed. The men s team has accumulated 19 marks for the season. The Bulldogs have multiple qualifiers in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. They also have qualifiers in the 400-meter dash, 400-meter hurdles, 4x100- and 4x400- meter relays, triple jump and high jump. The Lady Bulldogs have multiple qualifiers in the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump. They also have two heptathletes that have provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. CHERRY OFF TO QUICK START Freshman D Angelo Cherry, who broke the American Junior record in the 60-meter dash at the 2009 USATF Indoor Championships, is quickly making a name for himself. Cherry, a native of Jonesboro, Ga., ran a personal-best 10.16 seconds to win the Texas Relays university section 100-meter dash crown, a time that is currently ranked second in the SEC. QUICK WEEKEND RECAP MSU is coming off a successful weekend at Auburn, where three first-place finishes were captured. For the men, Dwight Mullings won the 400-meter dash (46.61), while Emanuel Mayers claimed the 400-meter hurdles (52.49). For the women, Marrissa Harris won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.51.
