Thirty-eight seconds later, Peila, who also had nine tackles, sealed the win with a 8-yard touchdown interception return. Peila leads the GNAC with six interceptions for 9 yards. The yardage total is a GNAC single-season record, breaking the old mark of by Brandon Kennedy of Central Washington in. Peila has career interceptions for yards, which is shy of Kennedy s career GNAC record. Peila s two picks were very crucial plays, Western Oregon head football coach Arne Ferguson said. They really put the game away. Schedule Date Opponent Site Time 8//...Northwest Christian... Monmouth... p.m. 9//... Humboldt State... Arcata, Calif.... p.m. 9//... San Francisco State... In Ferguson s first season at the helm in, he took over a program that finished -9 the year previous and pushed them to a - mark, finishing the season on a three-game win streak. Ferguson has carried that same momentum into three consecutive winning seasons and a Rotary Bowl Championship. The GNAC coaches poll Western Oregon was picked third in the GNAC preseason coaches poll with points. Central Washington was selected as the conference favorite, garnering points and four of five first place votes. Ferguson took over the football reigns in, and promptly turned a -9 team () into a - club that fall. The Wolves then went - in, losing all four games by a total of just points. He then guided WOU to one of the best records in program history with a 9- mark and a victory in the Rotary Bowl. In 8, the Wolves went - with a - record on the road. He then followed it up with a - campaign in 9 and a - mark in to bring his career record to 9-. The coaching staff John Bartlett Eric Davis Brian Harris Gavin Romanick Matt Overlin Keith Akina Josh Manning Chester Anonson Solomom Tapasa Caleb Singleton WOLVES Coaching In addition to being the head coach, Ferguson also operates as the team s defensive coordinator. Last year, the Wolves defense ranked th in the country in opponent third down percentage (8.) and 8th in both scoring and total defense. Coach Ferguson also helped guide four-year letterwinning safety, Caleb Singleton, to multiple All- American awards. Ferguson was also instrumental the development of wide receiver Demario Ballard and linebacker JT Gilmore, both of whom received free agent deals in the NFL prior to the season. Ferguson s heart and soul is all Wolves red, because for over years he has been involved as a player, assistant coach, and now head coach of the Western Oregon football program. Ferguson played his college football in Monmouth from 98-88. He began his coaching career at Western Oregon in 989 and has been on the sidelines at McArthur Field ever since, minus a one-year stint in the high school coaching ranks (Silverton, 99). He coached the defensive backs and linebackers at WOU before becoming the defensive coordinator in 99. His defensive squad that season was one of the most feared in the conference and was a major component in the Wolves CFA title drive that year. A 99 graduate of Western Oregon, Ferguson was a three-time All-CFA choice, earning first-team honors in 98 and 98 and was a second-team pick as a senior. He led Western Oregon with tackles, seven pass deflections and three interceptions in 98. He played on the last Wolves teams to post back-to-back winning seasons (98 and 98), a distinction that he would like to see erased with an above-. campaign this fall. Ferguson graduated from Vale High School in 98, where he was a standout in football, basketball and baseball.he and his wife April make their home in Monmouth, where they are parents to sons Logan, born in August of, and Brooks, who came into the world August,.
