2018-2019 Parents and Potential Cheerleaders, Thank you for your interest in trying out for the 2018-2019 Myers Park High School Cheerleading Program! Camp/ choreography days for tryout material will be held July 30th-31st, final try outs will take place August 1st. Parent meeting, apparel fitting, and apparel ordering will take place on Thursday, August 2 rd at 4pm. We are excited to begin gearing up for what is sure to be a great season filled with hard work, lots of fun, big goals, and new traditions. Our cheerleaders are some of the most visible students at Myers Park and in the community, and they are held to the highest of expectations and standards by our coaching staff. Cheerleaders who are selected for a team must make a substantial time commitment in order for our teams to run efficiently and successfully. Our cheerleaders support Myers Park High School athletics at all regular and playoff football and basketball games as well as competing on the regional and state level. This packet is very detailed and explains all of the high expectations to which we hold each cheerleader and how we conduct our program. We fully believe that making the decision to tryout should be a family decision and not just the cheerleader s decision. Should your child make either the Varsity or JV game day team or the competition team, the family is just as committed as the cheerleader is to helping our program run successfully all season. Please print and read all of the information in this packet carefully to be sure you and your cheerleader understand what will be expected of them before trying out. 2017-2018 FINANCIAL COMMITMENTS Cheerleading is an expensive sport, just like other sports at Myers Park. There are apparel and other program needs that are associated with our sport that simply must be met in order for our program to continue to grow and excel. The following is a list of items that will be purchased for this season. Prices are estimates at this time and are subject to change. Should your child make either the JV or Varsity team, the amount due is based on what your cheerleader needs to purchase for the season. If your child makes the team, we will discuss the process for ordering apparel and accessories at our cheerleader/parent kick-off meeting on Thursday, August 2nd. All Game Day Cheerleaders MUST pay for the following: Athletic Participation Fee: $200 ($100 due at the beginning of each football and basketball season) At the beginning of each season, pay by credit card online or write a check directly to Myers Park High School. I understand that he/she must abide by the rules and regulations set forth by the coaches, athletic director, and principal of Myers Park High School, and be present for all practices and games. I understand that all required forms must be completed and turned in by the first day of tryouts, or my child will not be able to tryout. I understand the procedures of cheerleading tryouts and I agree to abide by the final decision of the judges. I understand that beginning August 1, practices and camp/ clinics are mandatory and my child will be in attendance. I understand all financial costs involved as stated in the 2017-2018 Financial Commitments section of this packet. 2018-2019 Attendance Policy All practices, games and other scheduled activities with the squad are mandatory! Cheerleading is a team sport that relies on the cooperation, teamwork and the participation of each member on the team to work with each other. It is imperative and a key success factor that each member is present at all scheduled practices, games and events. MISSING PRACTICE OR A GAME: CHEERLEADERS (NOT PARENTS) MUST CALL COACH DIRECTLY IF SHE HAS TO MISS A PRACTICE OR GAME: Cheerleaders should contact the coach as soon as she/he knows that she/he is going to be late or miss a practice/game. Cheerleaders must give advance notification if a practice or game has to be missed. Please do not notify coach a few minutes before practice/game starts! PLEASE NOTE: If a cheerleader misses practice or a game she is expected to contact another squad member to see what was missed. The cheerleader will need to make sure she is caught up on everything before the next practice. EXCUSED ABSENCES -The following absences are excused: 1. Academic work: Notify the coach in advance and also have the teacher email the coach directly. 2. Sick: Notify the coach before practices/games if you are sick and did not come to school. If you miss a practice due to being sick, please have your parent email me and provide a doctor s note by the next practice. Please read the attached Athletic Participation form for the school's policy in regards to attendance. 3. Family emergency/death in family UNEXCUSED ABSENCES - Examples of unexcused absences: 1. Non-emergency doctor s appointments 2. Work/Babysitting 3. Sports/clubs/activities outside of MPHS 4. Family parties, weekend trips or vacations DISCIPLINARY GUIDELINES: 1. Late to practice: conditioning 2. Late to game: out quarter breaks, conditioning 3. 1st unexcused missed practice: Out for one quarter of the next game 4. 2nd unexcused missed practice: Out of half of the game 5. 3rd unexcused missed practice: Meeting with cheerleader, out the next two games but still required to attend 6. More than three excused missed practices: Meeting with cheerleader, out half of the next game 7. Unexcused absence for a game: Out the next game, required to attend, out of quarter breaks for the game following the first game back 8. Excused absence for a game: Out quarter breaks for the following game *Cheerleaders should be on time and present at all scheduled events*

CHEERLEADERS ARE EXPECTED TO FOLLOW ALL THE GUIDELINES THAT WERE STATED IN THE ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION FORM! This form was filled out by the cheerleader and parent/guardian before tryouts. Cheerleaders/Athletes are role models and must follow the guidelines that are listed to ensure a safe and productive cheerleading season. TRANSPORTATION FOR PRACTICES & GAMES Parents and Cheerleaders are responsible for scheduling their own transportation to and from practices and home games. Please note that coaches must stay until all cheerleaders are picked up, so please make every attempt to be on time. Transportation for all away games will be provided by the school and each cheerleader MUST ride the bus to and from the game. Cheerleaders cannot drive to and from any away game. This is a CMS Rule! There are two exceptions to the rule listed above. The exceptions are as follows:. A cheerleader can ride home with their parent/guardian after an away game only if they email the coach in advance and make sure they personally (face to face) check in with the coach prior to leaving with their child. Cheerleaders can also ride with another cheerleader's parent after a game. In order for this to happen the coach must receive an email from the parent/guardian in advance and the parent driving a cheerleader that is not their child must personally check in (face to face) with the coach prior to leaving the game. Myers Park High School Cheerleaders must: Meet the eligibility requirements set forth by the NCHSAA and CMS Be a current or rising student of Myers Park High School Maintain a quarterly GPA of 2.0 or greater (this will be checked during tryouts before selecting teams!) Have an attendance record of 85% or higher for the previous semester (no more than 13.5 absences in one semester allowed this will be checked during tryouts before selecting teams!) Turn in a tryout application and signed parent & cheerleader permission forms Turn in a proper and up to date physical form for the current year of participation Turn in all official NCHSAA and CMS documents needed before athletic participation TRYOUT REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS 1. Tryouts will be held in a fair manner conducive to allowing each athlete to show their best abilities and potential. 2. A tryout will consist of performing designated skills in front of judges in small groups. 3. Required skills that will be judged include Jumps, Motions, Cheer/Chant, and Cheer Dance. Cheerleaders must be able to execute a clean Round Off Toe Touch to be considered for a team. Cheerleaders may also demonstrate any standing and/or running tumbling skill they wish for bonus points, but this is optional. A list of score ranges for optional standing and running tumbling is provided for you in this packet. 4. Selection of the team will be based on point totals assigned by judges. 5. Acceptance of a candidate shall be on the basis of ability, the coaches agreement, acceptance of the team rules, and without prejudice to race, gender, ethnicity, or religion.

VIDEO TRYOUTS: (MUST BE PREAPPROVED BY JULY 28th ) This is ONLY for EXTREME circumstances and there will be NO EXPECTIONS to having conditions approved by the Program Directory and Athletic Director. In the event you are eligible and have a confirmed video tryout authorized, you will receive the tryout material the SAME DAY as cheerleaders attending choreography/ camp days. Videos of ONLY material that is taught that day will be emailed to cheerleader at 6pm on the day material is taught each day. Videos consisting of INTRO, MOTION DRILL, JUMPS, CHEER, and DANCE must be sent in by 9AM on Wednesday, August 1st. All videos sent after 9AM will NOT be eligible to continue in the tryout process and further elimination from the tryout process. Judges will all see videos and score them as all other cheerleaders for the tryout process. If any video candidates, you will be required to report to mandatory meeting on Thursday, August 2nd and attend mandatory practices beginning August 6th. CLINIC DAYS AND FINAL TRYOUT DAY ARE CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC (no parents, friends, spectators etc.) TRYOUT ATTIRE CLINIC DAYS Please come prepared to be physically active. Cheerleading shorts and tank are recommended (please no denim or basketball shorts). There should be NO cheerleading references or logos anywhere on your clothing unless it s Myers Park. ATTIRE: Myers Park colors (green/ black/white) Cheerleading shoes or athletic/running shoes should be worn. Hair must be pulled out of the face and into a ponytail. A bow should be worn. NO JEWELRY OR GUM. NO EXCEPTIONS. Bring plenty of water/sports drinks and healthy snacks. FINAL TRYOUT DAY All potential cheerleaders trying out must wear plain black shorts and a black tank top (please no denim or basketball shorts). There should be NO cheerleading references or logos anywhere on your clothing. Hair should be pulled out of the face and into a clean and neat ponytail. A solid bow may be worn in the hair. LOOK POLISHED AND GAMEDAY READY! Cheerleading shoes or athletic/running shoes should be worn. NO JEWELRY OR GUM. NO EXCEPTIONS. Bring plenty of water/sports drinks and healthy snacks. TRYOUT RESULTS Results will be posted on the Varsity and JV cheerleading pages of the Myers Park High School Athletics website by 3PM on Wednesday, August 1st. Team placement will be posted by athlete name.
