DO NOT restrict the access of ambient air to the sensor. Note: Prolonged exposure to excessively high concentrations of toxic gas may cause the sensor to produce erroneous readings. All Sensidyne gas detection equipment is functionally tested and calibrated with known zero and span gases before shipment to the customer. To ensure proper operation calibrate at regular intervals. Failure to calibrate in accordance with the instructions in this manual and at regular intervals may result in the product malfunctioning. Verify concentration of calibration span gas before making calibration adjustments. Concentration can be altered by: Deterioration of the concentration of compressed calibration substance sources during storage. Interaction of the calibration substance with materials used to contain and transfer the substance, as for example, absorption onto and permeation through certain plastics. Interaction of the calibration substance with materials with ambient contaminants, as for example, absorption into water. Sudden changes in pressure may cause temporary fluctuations in the sensor reading. 8

SECTION ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 OVERVIEW This manual provides specific information concerning calibration, specifications, and interferents of the Sensidyne SensAlert Sensor. Each sensor is capable of detecting the presence of potentially hazardous concentrations of toxic, combustible gas, or Oxygen. The sensor assembly is mounted to the transmitter by inserting the three guide pins on the sensor assembly into the 3 matching holes on the sensor interface assembly. The sensor assembly is then pushed upward to engage the sensor interface cable connector. SensAlert Sensors may be interchanged without any special tools or adjustments. When a new sensor is installed in the unit, the transmitter or monitor automatically recognizes the new gas type, range, and measuring units and adjusts the electronics accordingly. The sensor information is also sent to a SensAlert controller (if one is connected), where the controller makes the necessary electronic adjustments for the new sensor. NOTE Catalytic Combustible and Infrared sensors require a 3-wire transmitter for operation and will not work with 2-wire transmitters. Sensor specifications can be found in Appendix A: Specifications. Product specifications for transmitters, monitors, and controllers can be found in the respective operation and services manuals. 1.2 SENSALERT INTELLIGENT SENSORS 1.2.1 SensAlert Disposable Sensors SensAlert Universal Transmitters and the SensAlarm Universal Gas Monitor can use either toxic, combustible gas, or Oxygen sensors (see Figure 1.1). Toxic and Oxygen sensors are electrochemical sensors designed to respond to the presence of a specific gas. Gas molecules permeate the sensor membrane and initiate an electrochemical reaction in the sensor. Combustible sensors are catalytic oxidation type or IR used to detect most combustible gases in the 0-0 % range. The sensor assembly consists of either a sealed or refillable sensor attached to a circuit board. Non-volatile memory on the circuit board contains essential sensor identification information that is communicated to the monitor during sensor installation. A female connector mounted on top of the circuit board mates with a male connector mounted inside the sensor interface assembly. Note Some biased sensors are shipped with attached battery boards to maintain biasing for up to 1 year (see Figure 1.2). Battery boards should remain attached to the assembly until just prior to sensor installation (maximum 15 seconds). 1.2.2 Sensor Storage Sensors should be stored in their original containers at 3 20 C (37 68 F) Cooler temperatures are preferred. If not stored in their original sealed containers, sensor should be stored at 30 50 %RH (sensors in sealed containers will reach their own equilibrium moisture level). Sensors should be allowed to re-equilibrate at their use temperature prior to testing or calibration (30 minutes to 1 hour is usually sufficient for cold stored sensors). Biased sensors must be stored on their battery bias boards or they could need 24 72 hours to re-equilibrate once they are plugged in for use. Long term storage of oxygen sensors is not recommended since these sensors can be consumed during storage. 1.2.3 SensAlert Refillable Sensors In addition to the above items, SensAlert refillable sensors are mounted on their sensor board via a coaxial (BNC) connector. The sensors may be removed from their PCBs for inspection and servicing. A table of refillable replacement/service parts is shown below. Note Sensor membrane caps are custom fit to each refillable sensor to maximize sensor performance. Always insure that the number on the membrane cap matches the cap code number on the side of the sensor, otherwise performance may be degraded, or cap may be damaged. SECTION TWO CALIBRATION EQUIPMENT & SERVICES 2.1 INTRODUCTION All Sensidyne gas detection equipment is functionally tested and calibrated with known zero and span gases before shipment to the customer. However, it is recommended that qualified personnel verify operation after initial installation using known zero and span gases. Repeat verification at 30 days and 60 days after initial installation, with deviations in zero and span recorded. The calibration or functional check interval can then be adjusted to suit that application s conditions. For further information, please consult the ISA Recommended Practices for gas detectors. 2.2 ACCESSORIES & CALIBRATION GASES Standard calibration accessories for SensAlert Transmitters and SensAlarm Monitors include gas bottles, regulators, carrying cases, and calibration cups. All calibration gases are shipped in either disposable aluminum or steel cylinders. Aluminum cylinders contain 58 liters of the calibration gas, while steel cylinders contain 3 liters. Each calibration gas cylinder is shipped with an MSDS sheet (a NIST traceable calibration certificate also is available upon request.) Contact Sensidyne for information on ordering specialty accessories or gases. 12

SECTION FOUR REFILLABLE SENSOR MAINTENANCE 4.1 OVERVIEW Periodic preventive maintenance of SensAlert refillable sensors is required to ensure proper operation of the system. The following sections describe certain simple maintenance procedures that may be performed in the field. Field maintenance should be limited to : General inspection Electrolyte replacement Membrane cap replacement General inspection, electrolyte replacement, and membrane cap replacement should be performed at regular three (3) month intervals. These maintenance procedures should also be performed following prolonged exposure to high concentrations of the target gas. The sensor assembly should be replaced if it is damaged when it no longer performs properly, or as scheduled. NOTE If the sensor assembly is damaged or defective, DO NOT attempt to repair it. Return the entire sensor to Sensidyne for service. NOTE The three (3) month maintenance schedule is based on normal operating conditions (see Appendix A: Specifications). Excessively severe or dirty environments may require these maintenance procedures to be performed more frequently. 4.2 GENERAL INSPECTION This inspection procedure should be performed every three (3) months (normal operating conditions). Refer to Figure 4.1. 1) Perform a visual inspection of the area surrounding the transmitter to ensure air flow to the sensor is unrestricted. 2) Remove the sensor retainer from the transmitter 3) Remove the sensor assembly from the sensor interface assembly by gently pulling down. 4) Remove the sensor electrode from the PCB by holding the edges of the PCB and pulling the sensor off the coaxial (BNC) connector. 5) Position the sensor vertically with the membrane cap facing down. Hold the sensor up to a bright light at eye level. The electrolyte should be visible, with its level just below the vent hole. If the electrolyte is not visible, or the level is well below the vent hole, the electrolyte should be replaced. (Go to Section 4.3.) 6) Refer to Figure 4.1. With the membrane cap still facing down, inspect the cap for leakage. NOTE Leaks - regardless of their source - tend to migrate toward the face of the membrane cap. If a leak is visible, determine its source by first blotting off excess electrolyte, then placing the sensor (cap-side down) on a piece of paper. 19

7) Remove the sensor and examine the surface of the paper: If the wet area forms a ring, electrolyte is leaking from the edges of the cap, indicating that it may not be securely sealed. a) Remove the cap and apply silicone grease to the threads. (Do not get grease on the inside surface of the cap, on the face of the cap, or on the membrane itself. If you do, discard the cap.) b) Replace the cap and tighten it using the Sensidyne Torque Tool. Re-inspect for leaks. If leaks are still visible, replace the membrane. If the wet area forms a dot, the leak is coming from the membrane itself. a) Remove the membrane cap and closely inspect the membrane for tears or punctures. If tears or punctures are visible, replace the membrane cap. If the membrane appears undamaged, apply silicone grease to the threads of the cap. (Do not get grease on the inside surface of the cap, on the face of the cap, or on the membrane itself. If you do, discard the cap.) 8) Position the sensor with the membrane cap facing up. 9) Inspect the membrane cap to ensure that the holes exposing the membrane are not clogged. Gently blow away any dirt that may be clogging the holes. Do not touch the membrane. ) Inspect the holes again. If the dirt is still clogging the holes, the membrane cap must be replaced. (Proceed to Section 4.4.) 11) Once all applicable maintenance procedures have been performed, mount the sensor by presssing it into the coaxial (BNC) connector. Mount the sensor in the transmitter by inserting the three (3) guide pins into the sensor interface assembly. Rotate the sensor assembly until the guide pins are properly seated in the counter bore holes. Push the sensor assembly upward to engage the electrical connection. 12) Make certain the sensor retainer is properly installed. 13) Allow the sensor to stabilize for one (1) hour before attempting calibration. WARNING Vapors from silicone grease will quickly poison a catalytic bead combustible sensor. Do not use silicone grease where its vapors can migrate to a catalytic bead combustible sensor. b) Replace the cap and tighten it using the Sensidyne Torque Tool. Re-inspect for leaks. If leaks are still visible, replace the membrane. (Proceed to Section 4.4.) 21

4.3 ELECTROLYTE & MEMBRANE CAP REPLACEMENT Sensidyne recommends replacing the membrane cap whenever the electrolyte is replaced. Electrolyte replacement should be done every three months. The electrolyte replacement schedule is based on normal conditions (see Appendix A: Specifications). Temperatures and/or air speeds higher than specified, or humidity lower than specified will increase the frequency of electrolyte replacement. 8) Remove the new membrane cap from its packaging. Ensure that the cap code number matches the code number in parenthesis on the outer wall of the sensor (shown as X in Figure 4.1). CAUTION The sensor operation may be degraded by using a membrane cap bearing the wrong code number. CAUTION The code number on the replacement membrane cap must match the code number in parenthesis on the outer wall of the sensor. A mismatched membrane cap can seriously impair the performance of the sensor. Electrolyte replacement should be done before replacing the membrane cap to ensure the membrane is not contaminated with old electrolyte. Replace the membrane cap and electrolyte as follows (refer to Figure 4.1): 1) Remove the sensor retainer. 2) Remove the sensor assembly from the sensor interface assembly by gently pulling down. Remove the sensor from its PCB by pulling it off the coaxial (BNC) connector. 3) Position the sensor vertically with the membrane cap facing up. 4) Carefully unscrew the membrane cap and lift it off the sensor. The membrane will be retained within the cap. Do not touch the surface of the membrane or any internal part of the sensor. 5) Safely dispose of the spent electrolyte. Shake the sensor to remove all of the electrolyte. 6) Re-orient the sensor vertically with the sensor reservoir surface facing upward. Fill the reservoir with distilled or de-ionized water. Discard the water and shake out any excess droplets. 7) Slowly pour 4-5 ml of fresh electrolyte into the sensor. This amount is sufficient to fill the sensor to approximately 0.5-1.0 cm (0.2-0.4 in) below the threads of the reservoir. A low profile drop of electrolyte should adhere to the surface of the center post. 9) Ensure that the threads of the membrane cap are freshly prepared with silicone grease. Applying a sufficient amount of silicone grease to fill the threads of the cap. (Do not get grease on the inside surface of the cap, on the face of the cap, or on the membrane itself. If you do, discard the cap.) ) Replace and tighten the cap using the Sensidyne Torque Tool until it is secure. Wipe away any excess silicone grease that escapes from around the edges of the membrane cap. NOTE Do not use any tools other than the Sensidyne Torque Tool to tighten the membrane cap. The sensor membrane cap may be damaged by over-tightening. 11) Position the sensor with the membrane cap facing down. Lightly tap the sensor 3-4 times to moisten the inside of the new membrane. 12) Once all applicable maintenance procedures have been performed, mount the sensor by presssing it onto the coaxial (BNC) connector. Mount the sensor in the transmitter by inserting the three (3) guide pins into the sensor interface assembly. Rotate the sensor assembly until the guide pins are properly seated in the counter bore holes. Push the sensor assembly upward to engage the electrical connection. 13) Make certain the sensor retainer is properly installed. 14) Allow the sensor to stabilize for one (1) hour before attempting calibration. 22

APPENDIX A USING THE SENSOR INTERFERENT TABLES Although highly selective for a particular gas, a sensor is not always completely specific. Certain sensor types will also respond to another gas, particularly if the other gas has similar physical/chemical properties. This other gas is called an interferent. Every effort is made to identify and minimize these interferences. NOTE The Tables are intended for guidance only. For the most accurate measurements the monitor should be calibrated using the target gas under investigation. Example shown below: Chloride The (Threshold Limit Value) for each interferent is included in this column. The is listed in (parts per million), %v (% by volume) or in some cases as an (ACGIH, 1999). A C before a indicates a ceiling limit. The exposure concentration level for the interferent is listed here. A single number (or range of numbers) represents the amount of interferent needed to register a sensor response as if it were the target gas. If the number is paired with in the Column any gas amount below that number will have no effect on the sensor. 12.5 %v 0 0.5 6.7 + 1 Ethylene 3.1 %v 0 %v 7000 + 1 Cyanide C 4.7 5.6 %v 0 no data Sulfide %v 2.2 + 1 Nitric Oxide 0 Nitrogen 3 + 1 Sulfur 2 5 + 1 The (Lower Explosive Limit) for each interferent is included in this column. The is listed in %v (% by volume). Three asterisks () mean the interferent is not combustible in air under normal conditions. The response of the sensor to the interferent is listed here. If the response is listed as then the interferent has no effect on the sensor below the amount listed in the column. If the response is listed as + 1 the effect on the interferent is positive (additive). This means that the sensor will act as if there were 1 more of the target gas then is actually the case. If the response is listed as 1 the effect of the interferent is negative (subtractive). This means that the sensor will act as if there were 1 less of the target gas then is actually the case. The unit of measure can be either, %vol, or %. INTERFERENT NOTE If an interferent is present and there is no target gas, certain transmitters will not display the interferent response until the EFFECT of the interferent reaches ± 4. This is due to a display blanking that occurs between -3 and + 3 on transmitters that display gas concentrations AS WHOLE NUMBERS ONLY (no decimals) [see Sensor Table on page 3 for list of applicable sensors]. 23
