My personl interest in strted studies in New Engl n spred both in Virgini. When I decided crete retirement cdemic position here in Arknss, I nturlly expressed n interest in lerning more bout Ozrk. Contcts t Bufflo River fice in Hrrison subsequently invited me study tht where it occurred in ir prk. Along wy, I ( help series intrepid, het chigger resistnt grdute students) discovered lot bout our locl. Here s short synopsis wht we found out. One most significnt discoveries is tht our ws rel. This ws in doubt becuse nor vriety leves nuts tht look lot like those Ozrk vriety grows s shrub in Applchins. We were ble find intct remins Ozrk three feet in dimeter. This ws no shrub! We found number fllen ded s tht were intct enough mesure ir structure in detil n use our mesurements flesh out wht would hve looked like in life (see figure). The ws s big or bigger thn oks hickories growing on sme dry ridgep sites dy. Chinqupin hd single dominnt trunk, but lso series little dwrfed stems rryed round bse, which must hve given distinct look tht ws quite different from tht or s growing it. We soon found tht our lrge s died in 1957. How could we do tht? The simplest wy ws find remins lrge ded. Then find nerby ok. The first time we did this ws long ccess rod t Turner Bend. This white ok ws bout 8 feet from bse log. We ok strd increment core from tht looked t growth ring structure. You could esily count bckwrds from smpling dte (2010) set unusully thick growth rings strting in 1958. This ws cler unmbiguous indiction tht sudden deth big hd drmticlly improved growing conditions for ok it hd once overshdowed. We sw sme results t or loctions in northwest Arknss yer in which competing s sw improved growth ws lwys 1958. Thus, now ded s must hve died in 1957. In spite, is very common on Bufflo River. How cn tht be? It turns out tht fungus is inhibited by soil bcteri. So roots cn re-sprout grow for few yers until finds m kills m bck ground. Poet Robert Frost tlked s smoldering t roots. But he spoke in error. My previous studies showed tht lrge s originlly killed by did not normlly generte new sprouts. They just died. The sme ppers be true for Ozrk. The sprouts we see dy represent old seedlings. These re seedlings tht represent ongoing reproduction in yers before rrived.
