Petersen previously served as an Assistant Coach for the AHL s Springf ield Falcons in 2014-15 under current Monsters Head Coach Jared Bednar. Prior to his coaching career, Petersen enjoyed a 14-year professional playing career as a f orward, including 398 career NHL games played spanning parts of ten seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars from 2001-2012. Steve McCarthy, Assistant Coach A f ormer first-round selection by the Chicago Blackhawks (23rd ov erall) in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Trail, British Columbia nativ e Steve McCarthy enters his first season in professional coaching with the Monsters in 2016-17. A member of the Monsters 2016 Calder Cup Championship team, McCarthy logged 302 career NHL appearances as a defenseman for the Blackhawks, Vancouver Canucks and Atlanta Thrashers during a prof essional playing career that spanned 16 seasons f rom 2000-2016 and also f eatured stops in the AHL, KHL and ECHL, along with stints in the top Finnish and Swiss leagues. Darryl Seward, Video Coach A Newf oundland native, Darryl Seward returns to the Monsters in 2016-17 f or his second season as Cleveland s Video Coach and f ourth season in the AHL, f ollowing stints with the Springf ield Falcons (2014-15) and Syracuse Crunch (2012-13). Prior to his professional coaching career, Seward served as an Assistant Coach for the QMJHL s Moncton Wildcats for four major junior seasons from 2008-2012. LATEST TRANSACTIONS ALL-STARS ABOUND: The Monsters and the AHL announced Thursday that Cleveland RW Oliver Bjorkstrand (22GP, 10-5-15, 6 PIM, -4) and Monsters captain, LW Ryan Craig (31 GP, 4-5-9, 14 PIM, -5), w ere named to the Central Division s roster for the upcoming 2017 AHL All-Star Classic in Allentow n, PA. It s the first AHL All-Star appearance for both players. ROSTER TURNOVER: The Monsters holiday break featured multiple pieces of roster movement, including the Columbus Blue Jackets recall of D Dalton Prout follow ing a tw o-week conditioning assignment to Cleveland, the emergency re-call to Columbus and reassignment to the Monsters of RW Oliver Bjorkstrand, the assignment of rookie D Jacob Graves to the ECHL s Cincinnati Cyclones and the release of veteran RW Aaron Palushaj from his AHL SPC and his subsequent signing with Dinamo Minsk of Russia s KHL. LW Markus Hannikainen w as additionally recalled by Columbus on Wednesday and reassigned to Cleveland on Thursday before being recalled by the Blue Jackets for the fifth time this season on Friday. FORSBERG, DEAD AHEAD: Monsters G Anton Forsberg currently ranks in the AHL s top-ten in goals-against average (2.23, 10th). SHOOTOUT SUCCESS: The Monsters currently rank third in the AHL in shootout conversion rate this season (.462). LEAPING IN FRONT: So far this season, the Monsters boast an impressive 8-3-0-1 record when scoring the first goal of games. TEMPER, TEMPER: Stars D Dustin Stevenson currently ranks fifth league-w ide and second among AHL defensemen in penalty minutes this season w ith 71 to his credit thus far in 2016-17. Stevenson s five major penalties also rank tied for the league-lead among blue-liners this year. ALL-STAR APPEARANCE: Texas D Julius Honka (23 GP, 3-13-16, 45 PIM, -4) was announced on Thursday as a Pacific Division representative at the 2017 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Capital BlueCross. BAD BEHAVIOR: As a team, the Stars currently rank in the AHL s top-ten in penalty minutes per game this year. So far in 2016-17, Texas has averaged 17.0 penalty minutes per contest, the league s seventh-highest mark. SHOOTOUT STANDOUTS: The Stars currently rank in the AHL s top-three in shootout conversion rate, successfully scoring at a.500 clip in the shootout this year, the league s second-highest such figure. PLAYING FROM THE FRONT: The Stars currently boast an impressive 13-3-0-0 mark when scoring first in games so far this season. PK STRUGGLES: Texas overall penalty kill ranks dead-last league-w ide (74.0%, 30th) and the Stars home PK numbers aren t much better (77.0%, 24th).
