Sunshine Coast Region School Sport Track and Field Thursday 01 September, 2016 Friday 02 September, 2016 University of Sunshine Coast Sports Complex

GENERAL INFORMATION All of the essential information relating to the Sunshine Coast School Sport Regional Track & Field Trials is outlined below. Please ensure that you read this information carefully and you are familiar with all policies and procedures. CANTEEN A canteen will be available on both days for athletes/staff/spectators to purchase food and drinks. The canteen will be situated on the hill at the Chancellor State College end of the track. Athletes are also encouraged to bring their own water bottles. COMPETITION AREAS The Competition Area is the area located inside the fence-line. Athletes, Team Managers and Officials are the only personnel permitted in this area. All spectators are to remain outside the fence-line at all times. CHECK IN / UNIFORM All athletes are required to check in with their District Team Manager upon arrival. All athletes should be attired in their district or school colours for ease of identification. Shoes must be worn in both track and field events. Only exception is for 10-12 years track events where feet can be taped. FACILITIES The toilets are situated at the southern end of the building at the top of the grandstand. Additional toilet facilities are located in the University Stadium on the eastern side of the track. OFFICIALS Events will be officiated by district staff from across the Sunshine Coast Region. Districts have been asked to provide 2 officials who will be allocated to official duties. Each district will also have a team manager/s who will supervise their team and direct the athletes to their events according to the program. OUT-OF-BOUNDS The Rugby Field behind the Track Clubhouse is out of bounds. Districts need to ensure that their students are not playing on this field whilst the Regional Trials are being conducted. SEATING ARRANGEMENTS Districts are asked to sit on the hill or in the grandstand. There is minimal shade at the venue so districts will need to provide their own tents. At the end of the day, it is the responsibility of the each district to ensure their area is left in a clean and tidy state. Failure to do so will attract additional cleaning charges. SUN SAFETY & HYDRATION Athletes are advised to bring sunscreen, a hat and a water bottle. It is essential that athletes are well hydrated even in cooler weather. FIRST AID Qualified Sports Medicine personnel will be located beside the recording tent near the finish line. Athletes requiring strapping/taping need to provide their own tape. Please note that priority will be given to first aid requirements over strapping requests. It is recommended that 10 12 years athletes taping their feet do so before they arrive at the venue. TRANSPORT / PARKING Districts need to check the attached University Parking Map to locate parking and bus drop-off zones. Paid Parking Parking fees apply Monday Friday, 8am 6pm. To locate paid parking zones and pay stations, refer to the parking map. Free Parking Free parking is available at car park 15 (P15), off Claymore Road, approximately a 5-minute walk to the Athletics Track. Buses Drop off and pick up areas are located beside the Sports Stadium in car park 12a (see map).

AGES Athletes must be the age stated for each event. 18-19 Years born 1998 / 97 17 years born 1999 16 years born 2000 15 years born 2001 14 years born 2002 13 years born 2003 12 years born 2004 11 years born 2005 10 years born 2006 COMPETITION CONDITIONS - General COMPETITION RULES The Regional Trials will be conducted under the Rules of the IAFF Handbook except as varied by Sunshine Coast School Sport as indicated here or elsewhere. There will be no nominations or substitutions accepted on the day. Only athletes nominated by their District are eligible to compete. TRACK EVENTS All track events will use electronic timing and Photo Finish. Athletes in track events not run in lanes for the entirety of the event will be required to wear an allocated number attached to their right side which is clearly visible and not covered by their shirt/singlet. These numbers will be handed out during marshalling for that event. Team Managers need to make the recording tent & marshals aware of withdrawals / scratchings as soon as possible. Disqualification: Athletes may be disqualified if: They make a false start.* A false start is called if runners leave their mark with either hands or feet before the gun is fired; they jostle; obstruct or otherwise impede the progress of other competitors; during a race in lanes, they do not keep to their allotted lane. * False Start: For events designated to 10 15 years athletes, the first athlete to break will be warned. Any subsequent runner who breaks will be disqualified. For events designated to 16 19 years athletes, athletes will be disqualified on the first break. FIELD EVENTS In all field events, the winner is the athlete who has the longest or highest performance in the event, irrespective of the round in which the performance occurred. Each athlete will be permitted three attempts to place their best performance. Only flop mats will be used in the high jump events. Where time permits, the winner in high jump may be offered an opportunity to achieve a new record. PROCEDURE FOR TRACK & FIELD EVENTS Athletes who have a track and field event occurring at the same time must go to their field event first to register. They are to remain at their field event until they are called to marshal at their track event. Please do not go to your track event unless your age group has been called by the announcer.

ELIGIBILITY OF NON-PARTICIPATING ATHLETES FOR REGIONAL SELECTION Consideration will be given to requests for exemption for athletes who are unable to compete at the Regional Trials as long as the reason for the request meets the selection policy criteria. This Absentee Application for Exemption from Sunshine Coast Region Sport Trial can be found on the Regional School Sport website www.sunshinesport.eq.edu.au Requests for exemption must be received 24 hours prior to the start of the day of the Trials. No requests will be accepted on the day of the Trials. A request for exemption does not guarantee selection in the Regional Team. An athlete s results from their District Trial will be the major basis for consideration for selection. SELECTION PROCESS Once athletes have finished either a track or field event, the officials will indicate who is eligible for selection in the Regional Team. These athletes will be then be directed to report straight to the recording tent. Ribbons will be distributed and personal contact details will be recorded on provided tablet devices for selection into the Regional Team. Athletes will be asked to provide their name, best email contact address and best mobile contact number/s. Once details have been recorded for the selected athletes, they will receive a Regional Track & Field Invitation to attend the State Championships and a Student Details Booklet. These documents have strict return timelines which must be followed if the athlete is to attend the State Championships. Please read carefully and follow all instructions. Once the athlete has been selected, they will have the opportunity to fill in and submit their Student Details Booklet and confirm their selected events. They also have the chance to try on and purchase regional apparel and pay their team levy. Payment can be made by EFTPOS only. No Cash! All of these tasks can be completed at the Sunshine Coast School Sport Uniform Shop located beside the university stadium. We strongly recommend that athletes take this opportunity which will save them time when it comes to collecting apparel from Sport Office based at Maroochydore State School prior to the State Championships. PROTESTS Protests should be brought to the attention of the Regional Trial Convenor and respective Referee within 15 minutes of the completion of the event concerned. Protests/concerns will only be accepted from District Team Managers. The decision of the Convenor / Referee is final.

SPECIFIC COMPETITION CONDITIONS FOR 10 12 YEARS SELECTION CRITERIA FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS ABLE BODIED ATHLETES The Sunshine Coast Region can only nominate the following number of athletes per age group and gender to the 10-12 Years State Championship. There are NO qualifying standards for these events. 100m 4 athletes Field 3 athletes 200m 3 athletes Multi - Event 2 athletes 800m 3 athletes Relay 1 team SELECTION CRITERIA FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS MULTI CLASS ATHLETES (PARA/DEAF) Multi class athletes who meet the qualifying standards for their event will be invited into the Regional Team. There are no restrictions on the number of athletes selected. A multi class athlete will be unable to compete in the state championships unless documentary evidence has been provided to verify the athlete s disability classification for both track and field events. A multi class athlete has the option of competing in a multi class event OR a comparable event for able bodied athletes. TRACK FORMATS 100m & 200m - The 100m and 200m events will be conducted as a heats and finals format. The fastest 10 athletes across all 100m heats will progress to the final. The fastest 8 athletes across all 200m heats will progress to the final. Regional Team selections will be based on the Final. Starting blocks for 100m & 200m are optional but if used, must be supplied by the athlete. 800m - the 800m events are generally conducted as a straight final. In cases where there are too many athletes for a straight final, there will be two timed finals. The fastest 3 athletes over both races will be selected in the regional team. MULTI-EVENT (Tetrathlon) Districts are able to nominate one athlete per age group (10, 11, 12, Boys & Girls) for the multi-event which will consist of 100m, 800m, Shot Put and Long Jump. Athletes nominated for the multi-event must have qualified for at least one of the listed events on merit (preferably two or more) at their District Trial. Athletes can be in individual events and the multi-event. This is the same situation as at the State and National Championships. If an athlete is already nominated for an event, which is also part of the multi-event, their time in their 100m heat / 800m timed final and best of three attempts (field) will count towards their points score. A separate multi-event will be run for athletes not nominated for individual 100m and 800m events. In the field events, Shot Put and Long Jump, any extra multi-event athletes will join the existing programmed event. No separate multi-event will be conducted for field events. Note: A multi-event athlete who competes in an event for selection as the multi-event nomination, is ineligible for selection in an individual event in which he/she did not qualify for at the District Carnival, irrespective of their placing in the event at the Regional Trial. FOOTWEAR The use of spiked running shoes (up to 7mm spikes) will only be permitted in 100m, 200m, Long Jump and High Jump. They must only be worn just prior to and during the event. Immediately after the track event is finished, athletes must remain in their lane, remove their running shoes and await instructions from the Officials. No running spikes are permitted in the 800m events Shoes (no running spikes) must be worn in Shot Put and Discus.

If athletes do not have suitable shoes, it is further recommended that the athlete s feet are taped before they compete. Athletes needing to have their feet taped by a Sports Medicine Trainer on the day must provide their own strapping tape. However, there may be time constraints depending on the number of athletes requiring taping, so it is advised that the athlete s feet are taped before they arrive at the venue. Feet should be taped in the recommended manner as shown below.

SPECIFIC COMPETITION CONDITIONS FOR 13 19 YEARS SELECTION CRITERIA FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS ABLE BODIED ATHLETES For all events (track and field) the Sunshine Coast Region may nominate all athletes who have attained the state qualifying standard at the Regional Trials. If the Sunshine Coast Region does not have an athlete who has qualified for a particular event, the region will be entitled to ONE (1) automatic entry for the event. An athlete may only nominate in a maximum of FIVE (5) events (excluding relays). SELECTION CRITERIA FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS MULTI CLASS ATHLETES (PARA/DEAF) Entry conditions for multi class athletes will be as above. A multi class athlete will be unable to compete in the state championships unless documentary evidence has been provided to verify the athlete s disability classification for both track and field events. An athlete with a disability has the option of competing in an MULTI CLASS event OR a comparable event for able bodied athletes. EVENTS NOT CONDUCTED AT THE REGIONAL TRIALS Nominations for Hammer Throw, Pole Vault, Walks, Steeple Chase, 200m & 400m hurdles must have been submitted with District Nominations by the due date prior to the Regional Trial. Athletes who have made the state qualifying standard in their event will be invited into the Regional Team. Nominations for Pole Vault and Hammer Throw must include a Certificate of Competency / Qualification which is signed by an accredited coach in these events (minimum Level Two A.T. & F.C.A. qualification) stating that the competitor has achieved the state qualifying standard. Competency, for the purposes of this certification, means that the student can execute the technique at a standard that is not likely to cause an unreasonable risk to the safety of either themselves, other competitors or officials. TRACK FORMATS All track events for 13-19 Years will generally be conducted as straight finals. In cases where there are too many athletes for a straight final, there will be timed finals. Any athletes who run a state qualifying time in their event will be invited into the Regional Team. Some events will be conducted as multi age events (eg. 17, 18-19 years) but athletes will be placed and selected according to specific age groups. HURDLES Hurdles are placed in each lane for all hurdles events. Athletes must keep to their lanes throughout all races. Hurdles competitors may be disqualified if they trail their leg or foot alongside any hurdles or cross any hurdles not in their own lane, or in the opinion of the referee, they deliberately knock down a hurdle by hand or foot. STARTING BLOCKS Starting blocks are optional at Regional Trials but if used, must be supplied by the athlete. Please note that starting blocks are compulsory at the State Championships for 100m, 200m, 400m and hurdles events. These starting blocks will be supplied at the State Championships. FOOTWEAR Footwear is compulsory for all events. Running spikes must meet the following criteria: o o Up to 9mm for track events Up to 12mm for jumps
