Missouri State Horseshoe Pitching News Volume 20, Issue 1 An Award-Winning Publication February 2016 h o r s e s h o e National Association P i t c h e r s Prez Report by Ron Highley, President MOHPA The winter weather so far this year has been kind to our indoor tournaments. I know of only one tournament that has been canceled because of bad weather, and they were able to get it in the next weekend. In our neck of the woods, we have had plenty of rain and it has been cold, but thank goodness not at the same time. We have also escaped the flooding that has hit much of the southern and eastern parts of the state. We are trying this winter to visit a couple of indoor courts that we had not been to before. We made it to one a while back when we went to McCown s Good Luck Courts. What a nice and WARM facility that is. Virgle has an outdoor wood furnace and pours the wood to it. If you have not been down to Bucyrus, it is well worth your drive. Kudos to Mark Snead and Quail Ridge Horseshoe Club for hosting a Junior s and Cadet s tournament on February 6 along with their adults tournament. They had room for 16 kids and had 30 sign up, so Mark is already planning a bigger tournament. This was also Victoria s first tournament back pitching after her knee replacement in December. She pitched okay, but the knee did great! We have an Officers Meeting coming up the end of this month on February 27. We will be meeting at the site of the 2016 State Tournament in Jefferson City. If you have any items to bring to our attention or if you would like to attend the meeting, contact one of your MOHPA officers. The outdoor leagues and tournaments will be here before we know it. Maybe now he will RETIRE!! 15th Annual Holly Marie Memorial by Stan Griggs Another 18 angels have earned their wings and have finished in the top three places in their class at the 15th Annual Holly Marie Memorial Mixed Open at the Don Harris Arena in Liberty, Missouri, on November 7. The angel count now stands at 270; check to see whether you can find them on the courts at the next tournament you attend. The High Over Average awards Wings of Achievement were won by Sue Roberts (6.99% over average in the morning session) and Victoria Highley (9.08% over average in the afternoon session). Class A: 1st place, Gregg Craven (30 ), 75.2% (8 angels); 2nd place, Gina Baker, 61.3% (2 angels); 3rd place, Karen Goldizen, 55.0% (1 angel). Class B: 1st place, Victoria Highley, 52.1% (4 angels); 2nd place, Nancy Gunter, 45.8% (1 angel); 3rd place, Chuck Volpi Jr. (30 ), 38.8% (1 angel). It all began with Missouri s fantastic performance at the Team World in Beloit. We blazed the trail for the Royals going all the way, followed closely by the Chief s record-breaking run. Just what will 2016 hold for the world of sports and horseshoes? Come on, sign up for Team World; practice, practice, and start the winnings on to bigger and better. This issue of Shoe Biz includes entry forms to two really big events in our world: funding MOHPA with the Club Team Championship, and world recognition with the World Championship. There are invitations to compete or observe at the Team World and the Hall of Fame Invitational. There are words of encouragement and enticement, with the State Tournament to be held in our capitol city. Look for and respond positively to all. We welcome the return of From My Court to Yours and to the beginning of Junior Spotlight, both on page 3. It was with great happiness that I saw the new for Juniors and Cadets only tournament. I encourage other clubs to initiate this type of competition locally. I can tell you from hearing from my own grandchildren, they enjoy pitching within their peer group much more than pitching against adults. If you have concerns you think are worthy of bringing before the officers of the state, let them be known. They can be considered at the upcoming officers meeting to be held in Jefferson City. Do you have someone in mind who you consider worthy of the MOHPA Hall of Fame and why? Do the homework, dig up the dirt, and find the jewels in your club. Make the nominations. Support the MOHPA! by Donna Bastel As most of you know, the MOHPA Club/Team Benefit Tournament is the only fund raiser for the MOHPA. In 2015, we had a disappointing 53 entries, which included only 10 teams from across the Show Me State. If we schedule three sessions throughout the day, we can field 96 pitchers. PLEASE BE ONE OF THEM!! The 2016 event will be held on June 4 at the Quail Ridge courts in Wentzville. You will find the Entry Requirements and Entry Form on pages 10 and 11 of this issue of Shoe Biz. The cutoff date is May 20, 2016. Please poll your club members at your earliest opportunity and get your entries sent in. Your club cannot bring home the Championship plaque if you don t enter a team. Go for the gold, or maybe you d call it bragging rights. If you can t come up with five team members within your club, call someone who doesn t belong to any club and get them to join you. They can be from anywhere. The only requirement is that they are a current-year card holder. Three of your team members must belong to your club. The host hotel for 2016 is the Holiday Inn Express, 1155 Technology Drive, O Fallon, MO, 636-300-0999. They are holding a courtesy block of 10 rooms at $86 per night. If you make your reservations early, many more rooms are available. Just tell them you are pitching in the Club/Team Tournament at Quail Ridge. We look forward to seeing you there! From My Court to Yours by Jim Bainter This issue of Shoe Biz starts a new beginning for me as the MOHPA Secretary/Treasurer. As a result, I have resurrected the column I used as president: From My Court to Yours. This title seems appropriate because the focus of this column will be to provide useful information to all pitchers and to keep everyone abreast of MOHPA Secretary/Treasurer activity. First of all, I want to let you know that my article was not included in the October issue, so I wasn t able to thank everyone who has helped during the State Tournament over the past 5 years. Your hosts, Jim Caufield, Ed Eliason, and I, hope that you have enjoyed this fine indoor facility and the hospitality of the City of Lebanon. That said, it s on with the new. One of my early projects was to expand the current HSMaster Player Profile contained in the Horseshoe Master program that is used by many clubs and individuals to manage tournaments and leagues into a master database. This effort included combining the older DOS-based horseshoe management system (SHOES) with several Excel spreadsheets and Word documents. Thanks to the work Gregg Craven had done in the past to convert Vicki s membership list to a useable spreadsheet to import into the player profile, it is now 95% complete. I intend to use this expanded profile as the primary database for all MOHPA records. It will be easily imported directly into HSMaster for profile updates and easy for me to develop reports for NHPA and MOHPA requirements. Please ensure that your addresses, e-mail addresses, and phone numbers are current. I expect to provide profile updates to the officers and tournament directors at the end of each month, and more frequently if needed. For those of you who use e-mail, please note that I have created a new address, mo4dead@charter.net, for MOHPA-related activity. Please ensure that your contact list is updated. The old address is still good, but I will keep MOHPA activity on a separate computer. My cell phone 816-918-6789 will be my primary contact number. Many of you may have noticed the address published for me on the 2016 Membership application in the last issue of Shoe Biz was in error. It was almost correct in that it said Gravois Bluffs, not Gravois Mills. That s been corrected; luckily, there is no Gravois Bluffs and the post office used only the ZIP code. If you did not receive a 2015 State Tournament patch when you checked in last year in Lebanon, more patches are available. You can request them from me via mail or e-mail, and they will be available during the next State Tournament. Since I assumed the secretarial responsibilities from Vicki on November 1, I have endeavored to turn around all membership renewals within 2 days. Sometimes my schedule and the weekend mail service do not cooperate. Please have patience. There s a lot to learn and a lot to do. Finally, I would like to express my personal thanks and appreciation to Vicki for the work she has done for the MOHPA for the last 28 years. Because we are members of the same league, I have known Megan McCleod for a long time. For several years, we were neck and neck, and she has kicked my behind countless times in the years we ve pitched together. Megan started pitching in 2007 when she was 9 years old. She always watched her grandparents, Bob and Denise Bloss, and they really motivated her to start pitching. Megan won Rookie of the Year in 2007. In the years since, she has pitched in the World Tournament, and won second place last year in Kansas. She has several State Championships as well. Besides the big tournament winnings, she has countless ribbons, plaques, and patches from other championships and accomplishments that have added up over the years. Her grandparents have supported her over the years, and she now pitches with her younger sister, Jessica Wilson, and her aunt and uncle, Chad and Kelly Bloss. For the rest of her high school career, Megan wants to participate more and get into more tournaments. After high school, she wants to go to college and study to be a psychologist. (Maybe she ll come and help all of us crazies who pitch!) If Megan won a million dollars, she would first pay for her college, then help her family and close friends with any debt. Then she would start saving for her future family and dream house. Megan McCleod is a wonderful pitcher and a wonderful person, and we all have the pleasure of pitching with her. Last Shoe By Jeanette Claas Kelly Marie Combs March 28, 1967 November 22, 2015 Kelly Marie Combs was born on March 28, 1967, to Anthony and Sheila Velasco in at St. Johns Hospital in St. Louis. Three years later, the Velasco family added a boy, Michael. They made their home in Overland until they moved to St. Charles in 1977. Kelly entered 4th grade at Central Elementary School in the Francis Howell School District. She then attended Hollenbeck Middle School, where I first met her. I was the secretary in the guidance office, and I picked her as a student helper to run errands for me. From that point on, she always called me Boss. She went on to attend Francis Howell High School, where she was active in basketball, but she loved playing softball. She would graduate in 1985. She worked at various jobs but the most recent one that she loved the most was working for the Wentzville School District in the Special Education Department with kids with disabilities. Three or four years after Kelly married, she and her husband adopted a baby, Alex, from Romania in 1999. He was 1 year old when he arrived in America. I remember Kelly telling me that it was an astronomical amount of money, but he was worth every penny of it. Once Kelly was out of school I would meet her once again on the courts at the Golden Triangle Baseball Park, where she was pitching in a league sometime in the 1980s. She joined the New Melle Horseshoe Club in 1992 and stayed with horseshoes until 2001, when she retired to become a full-time Mom. Alex became Kelly s whole life. She was an excellent mother and taught Alex all the things a son should and should not do. She and Alex were great Cardinals fans. They enjoyed attending the Cardinals Opening Day together for many years. They also enjoyed going to the lake to fish and walking through the woods. Alex, now 17 years old, has grown into a wonderful, athletic young man, one that she was very proud of. He is a junior at Wentzville High School. She returned to pitching with the Quail Ridge Horseshoe Club in 2009. She would always bring Alex. As soon as she joined the club, Kelly began pitching in tournaments. Taking that time off hadn t hurt her one bit. The first tournament she pitched in was the Shamrock Fling in March 2009, pitching a 47.97%. From that point on, she usually pitched in Class B, averaging anywhere from 45% to 50%. One time, Kelly arrived at a tournament to discover that she had been placed in Class A and wasn t happy one bit. It was out of her comfort zone. Kelly was a great competitor on the courts and was always full of energy. Going through her tournament records over the past 5 years, she won many 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards. She pitched in every tournament she could and was always ready for the next game. She attended as many Missouri State Tournaments as she was able and even managed to attend the 2012 World Tournament in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was the grand champion of the Hall of Fame Tournament held in conjunction with the 2009 World Horseshoe Tournament in Springfield, Illinois. She loved horseshoes and never got enough of it; she gave it her all. She pitched her last tournament on February 22, 2014, with 6 wins and 1 loss and averaged 44.7%. Her pitching career had gotten off to a great start until she was diagnosed with cervical cancer in May 2013. She was told that she had only 3 months to live, but she was a fighter and always believed that she could beat it. She was more concerned for her son than herself. A large tumor developed right after Halloween 2015, and at that time the doctors saw that there was nothing more they could do for her because the cancer had spread through her body. She died at home surrounded by her loving family, her son, father, mother, and brother. Kelly s ashes were spread on the lake where she enjoyed so many special moments with her family. The QRHC will always remember Kelly and her love of the game. We are saddened by her loss and the loss of her friendship. The QRHC members will honor her with a brick in her memory at the Dr. Jack Freeman Memorial Walkway. Her spirit will always remain within these courts. New NHPA Companion Logo The votes have been tallied and there is a clear-cut winner! With 32% of the total votes, the winning design for an updated NHPA logo that meets ALL of the requirements outlined in the contest rules was submitted by Bobby White of Pennsylvania. Not only can you tell at a glance that it is horseshoe pitching, you can also see male and female participation, the association name, and the website. This eye-catching design would look great on the back of a jacket or shirt and would need no explanation to those who view it. As explained in the contest and voting announcements, the intention is not to replace the existing NHPA logo, but to add a companion design that is easily identifiable to be used in promoting the association to the general public. An announcement will be made when the design becomes available to members. Bobby will receive a $50 prepaid Visa card for his winning design! A sincere thank you goes to every member who gave their time and effort to create and submit all the contest designs. 4

Missouri Horseshoe Club News Liberty Horseshoe Club by Daphne Happy The Harris Indoor Horseshoe Arena continues to be the gathering place for pitchers in nearby areas when it s too cold to play outdoors in the Missouri winters. League play is held on Monday mornings and Tuesday evenings by the Liberty Horseshoe Club and on Thursday evenings by the Heart of America Horseshoe Club. Tournaments are held roughly every other Saturday sponsored by various members; some are benefit tournaments and others are memorial tournaments. Check out the Tournament Schedule on the MOHPA website and on pages 12 and 13 of this issue of Shoe Biz. Liberty has a new pitcher, Don Fox, called Dad by Tim Fox. Rumor has it that Don was playing golf a couple of weeks ago (in JANUARY!) and got a hole in one. Congratulations! And we re glad to see you have started playing in tournaments with us. We would also like to extend a warm welcome to recent new pitchers, Dennis Shreve from Liberty and Jerry Stewart from Kearney, who joined us in January for league play. Congratulations to Junior Pitcher, Savanna Johnson, on her recent graduation from Truman High School. She finished her classes mid-term and will walk with her class in May 2016. We wish her luck as she pursues a career in modeling. Tom McGovern is back pitching with us again after a couple of stays in the hospital battling a nasty infection. Stay healthy, Tom. Nile Abbott is also back pitching and getting his strength back after being hospitalized with pneumonia. Perry Mann had bypass surgery in December and is still recuperating. His address is 6401 Hedges, Raytown, MO 64133. Al Gwinn is healing from surgery to remove skin cancer from his face and reconstructive surgery. He hopes to return to pitching soon. Ray s address is 526 S. Crane St., Independence, MO 64050. Paul Hudson was in and out of the hospital to get a clog removed so quickly that we didn t even know he was there. He missed 1 week of pitching because of the incision in his leg. He reports that he is feeling better than ever. Eileen Barry, wife of Joe Barry, is getting shots and attending a pain management clinic for the arthritis in her spine and hopes to avoid surgery. Eileen s address is 708 Melrose, Liberty, MO 64068. Some of our older pitchers may remember John Eggleston from Maysville, who used to drive down with the Maysville Gang to pitch in tournaments with us a few years back. John passed away February 2 at 99 years of age. Our condolences go out to his family. Strawberry Shed Horseshoe Club By Tracy Archer Change alert! Hudson Hall, Est. 1990 is no more. Strawberry Shed is now the moniker of our friends to the south. Why Strawberry Shed, you ask? During picking time, the horseshoe barn becomes Strawberry Central as Frank and Ruth harvest the fruits of their strawberry-growing hobby. Our club is much honored to have had Frank and Ruth Hudson, our hosts and Tournament Directors, inducted into the Missouri Horseshoe Hall of Fame in 2015. Humble as they are, they were very appreciative of all of the hard work done by others to get them this recognition by the Hall of Fame. The framed award is very noticeable as it is proudly hanging on the wall just as you enter Frank s office in the Shed. The Strawberry Shed is always kept clean and maintained. Calling it a horseshoe barn doesn t do the building justice. Frank constructed the building himself and is continually performing upkeep so it will stay top-notch. Lately, Frank and Ruth have put a lot of extra time and work into the arena, and it looks better than ever. Fresh paint throughout and new lighting over the scorekeepers desks are just a couple of the recent improvements. Five annual indoor tournaments are held at the Strawberry Shed on the first weekends in November, December, January, February, and March. Typically, if enough entries allow, six classes of 6 people are filled, with Classes F, E, and D competing in that order on Saturday and C, B, and A on Sunday. Frank s goal is to provide an indoor venue during the winter for local pitchers so that they can pitch in enough sanctioned tournaments to be eligible to pitch in the State or National tournaments. Because Crane is close to the state borders, we also have pitchers from Arkansas and Kansas entering tournaments here. So if you have not had the opportunity to play horseshoes in the Strawberry Shed, be sure to come pitch with us. Tournaments are open to all pitching divisions. Independence Horseshoe Club by Nancy Gunter The Independence Horseshoe Club has elected some new officers for 2016: Rick Gwinn, President; Keith Johnson, Vice President; Nancy Gunter, Secretary/Treasurer/Tournament Concessions; Laura Johnson, Statistician; Robert Johnson, League Director. This is the time of year that we normally complain about the long snowy winter and look forward to spring s April showers and May flowers, but so far we have been very fortunate and haven t had much snow to deal with. Speaking for myself, I am looking forward to the change in seasons and getting back to being outside more. 6
Michael Gillespie lost his wife, Debbie, on August 14, 2015. Our club also has several members who are currently dealing with health issues. We want to keep them all in our prayers. The Corporate Challenge is coming up on April 17, and our next league tournament is the Spring Open in May. We are looking forward to a great 2016 filled with fun, fellowship, and horseshoes. Capital City Horseshoe Club by Mel Bruemmer The Capital City Horseshoe Club has been diligently preparing to host the 2016 State Tournament. We have the portable pits and clay in storage. The host hotel is the Capital Plaza. Many other details are being worked out, and the #1 challenge of getting ads for the program book is being tackled by the club. The CCHC wrapped up play for 2015 in October. The Fall League winners were Billy Knife (1st), Jerry Weller (2nd), James Driver 3rd), and Mel Bruemmer (4th), with 17 players participating. The Club Championship was won by Steve Johnson at our annual club picnic. The club will sponsor eight tournaments and three leagues, along with hosting State Tournament in 2016. Please see the Tournament Schedule on pages 12 and 13 and pick out a time to pitch with us at the beautiful Washington Park Courts. Peculiar Lions Park Horseshoe Club by George Chichura Not much going on in Peculiar this time of year. We have a few members playing in leagues in Liberty. Ralph New has been to Bucyrus and Crane. The Highleys Ron, Victoria, Warren, and Memo went to Quail Ridge for the Future Champions Tournament. It was encouraging to see so many Juniors there. A few could not play because they were filled up! Warren and Memo had one loss each. Memo beat Warren, but Warren took first place with a 25% ringer average. Victoria Highley pitched her first seven games since undergoing knee replacement surgery just 8 weeks ago. What an outstanding recovery! We are looking forward to a great Summer season, especially going to Montgomery, Alabama, for the World Championships, and we ARE going to take back our KS vs MO border war title! I made four apple pies today. The pecans didn t do too well last year. I had a big job at the church last month installing four new heavy-duty outlets for the kitchen, using 150 feet of steel conduit, 750 feet of #10 wire, and three volunteers me, myself, and I. Horseshoe pitchers remember, If you always do what you always did. you always get what you always got! The league here in Peculiar starts April 28. Quail Ridge Horseshoe Club by Jeanette Claas There was no white Christmas in St. Charles County, but we were drenched with bucketsfull of rainfall. Plenty of people were out sandbagging trying to keep their homes and businesses dry. Even up by Mid Rivers Mall, the creeks were overflowing and I-70 was closed for a while. People were rerouting every direction trying to get to their work and homes. It seems that now everything is under control and we wait for our first real blast of winter. Our fall tournaments started with the NHPA-Sanctioned Club/ League Tournament in October with tournament director Jerry Smith. Illinois Team #2 was the grand champion: Austin Bailey, Ken Reid, and Denise Dailey. Mike Guilaume and Terri Leoffler were the tournament directors of the October Fest, and Rich Altis was the grand champion. The November tournaments began with Fall Team Tournament with Jim and Carol Howard as tournament directors. It was full and exciting and took up the entire Saturday. The team from Jefferson City was the grand champion: Steve Johnson, James Driver, Steve Steck, and Jerry Weller. Our Annual Turkey Trot a few days before Thanksgiving saw tournament directors, Jill Knobbe, Ralph Hummel, and Dave Sullivan putting on the show. Gary and Dee Null donated five baskets of goodies, and a silent auction was held with some very lucky winners on hand. Charlie Ward of Mexico won the turkey basket, but Ed Pashia was all smiles as he earned the Grand Champion title. Dee Null of QRHC fixed up a Christmas basket with a ham and all the trimmings for the Jingle Bell Rock Tournament. Jan Kreienkamp was the lucky winner! Tournament director Carol Compton was unable to attend due to back surgery. Her husband, Gaylord, had to double up on his job. Mike Dentsbier also stepped up to the plate to help out. Ed Griffith was the grand champion in the exciting A Class. By the time you receive this issue, we will have hosted a few more winter tournaments. Mark Snead will be holding a Junior and Cadet tournament on the same date as our Happy Hearts Tournament. As of now, 13 pitchers will be participating. We are hoping that this will be successful and that we can continue to hold these tournaments for the young ones our future horseshoe pitchers. We made a change in our tournament schedule this year, as you can see when you read the Tournament Schedule on pages 12 and 13 of this issue of Shoe Biz. We are moving our East vs West Challenge to May and adding the Don Claas Memorial Tournament on April 2. All proceeds from this tournament will go to help raise prize money for our Annual Hall of Fame Tournament. Dalton Rakestraw will be the tournament director, assisted by the Claas family. In a bit of other news, the best-looking female pitchers at QRHC turned 60 years old this past November. Congratulations to Ginny, Jill, and Jan! We are getting a new facelift at the Hall of Fame Facility. One of our newer members, Mark Neubauer, is giving it a new coat of paint, and it is already looking much nicer. Club News, from page 7 The QRHC has been hit hard over the past few years with the deaths of many members. Most recently, it was Kelly Combs, 47 years and much too young to die (see Last Shoe on page 4). The QRHC adopted Kelly s son, Alex, as our Family Christmas Project. On December 21, Alex and his grandparents were invited to the courts on League Night and we presented Alex with many gifts. More than $1500 was collected from our very generous members and the other horseshoe pitchers who helped out. Alex beamed when he was presented with a hoverboard by Paul Spell. A memorial stone and picture album of Kelly s events in horseshoes were given to him. It was a very special horseshoe moment for each of us. We are looking ahead in the year 2016 for many good things to come our way and are hoping to have many new pitchers join the club. I was at the courts this Sunday afternoon and noticed a lot of new pitchers coming for practice. Rich Altis was right smack in the middle of them teaching and encouraging them all to get a few ringers. Every Sunday, Rich and Mary donate their time to do this. Thank you, Rich and Mary. Come by and pitch some shoes with us. We ll leave the light on for you! Ringers in 2016! Shelbina Library Park Horseshoe Club By Scott Raimer Our 2015 league had 12 participants, including two junior pitchers. For the second year in a row, had one shift in which each member had an opportunity to pitch against every other member as we played as one shift. The starting times for some of the matches were staggered to allow this. All games for this league were a handicapped 50 shoe count, in which each member played two games each night against one opponent. This year s league champion was Pat Heathman and the runner up was David Day Sr. Our rookie of the year was Conner Chinn, who was also one of our junior pitchers. The recipient of the sportsmanship award as chosen by the membership this year was Scott Raimer. We are all looking forward to another season of horseshoe pitching in Shelbina for 2016. Join us. Future Champions Youth Tournament by Jeanette Claas Quail Ridge Horseshoe Club held its first tournament for Juniors and Cadets only. It was a most exciting day as Tournament Director Mark Snead watched the 16 kids between 7 and 15 years of age arrive at the National Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame for this event on Saturday, February 6, 2016. The tournament was held on the same day at the completion of QRHC s Happy Heart Tournament on the Jack Freeman Courts. Some of the participants had arrived earlier in the day because they had parents and grandparents participating in the Happy Hearts Tournament. It was a long day for the little ones to wait; however, we found some on the outside courts having fun with some warm-up practice! Others were watching the A Class adult horseshoe pitchers, hoping to get some tips before they began their competition. Among the adult pitchers were several former Youth World Champions: Denise Daly, Girls World Champion; Dalton Rakestraw, former Boys Junior World Champion; and Walter Ray Williams, Jr., former Boys Junior World Champion. The tournament consisted of a round-robin format. The Juniors pitched three games each of 40 shoes or 30 points, whichever came first, and the Cadets pitched five games of 20 shoes. Throwing 120 and 100 shoes, respectively, in this tournament would qualify them to pitch in the Missouri State Horseshoe Tournament, if they so desired. Each competitor was given a t-shirt with his or her name on front right and the words Future Champions beneath the horseshoes-and-stake logo on the left front. On the back of the shirt was their last name and state. These shirts can also be worn at the state tournament or at any tournament they would like to enter. The t-shirts were donated by Mark Snead and Dee and Gary Null. A hand towel was given to each pitcher by Sarah Geisler and Cindy Cooper, who are both new QRHC members. They also received a hook (pick-up hook) from NHPA GRS Gary Null. Their names were lit up on the monitor screens, and the kids took to the courts to begin their competition. For most, it was their first tournament ever. An adult was at each court to give assistance to the kids if needed. The spectators, consisting of parents, grandparents, and horseshoe pitchers, were as excited as the kids on the courts. The competition took approximately 2 hours. Trophies were donated by the family of the late Charlie Lawrence, and new name plates were put on them. Each child received a trophy, and they were absolutely delighted! The results were as follows. Juniors Class A: 1st place, Maddy Lawton, 11.67%; 2nd place, Garrin Bantle, 6.67%; 3rd place, Phillip Wing, 11.02%; 4th place, Eli Bezayiff, 5.93%. Juniors Class B: 1st place, Veronica Burns, 8.33%; 2nd place, McKalla Sanders, 7.50%; Reese Compton, 5.83%; 4th place, Nolan Cooper, 1.67%. Cadets Class C: 1st place, Warren Highley, 16.00%; 2nd place, Guillermo Ramirez, 8.00%; 3rd place, Vito Biendo, 2.00%; 4th place, Jade Rakestraw, 0.00%. Cadets Class D: 1st place, Alexis Szombathy, 6.25%; 2nd place, Ty Ware, 1.92%; 3rd place, Nate Cooper, 1.92%; 4th place, Lilyan Silman, 1.67%. It was a great tournament for the kids and adults alike. Plans are being made for future tournaments for the youth only. Mark Snead took it upon himself to organize this tournament because he saw a need for a kids tournament. Mark, a 3-year QRHC member, is a horseshoe enthusiast and an asset to the club. He participates in all leagues at QRHC and actively helps behind the scenes to help make the club an outstanding facility and a great place to pitch. MOHPA Hall of Fame by Dee McIntire The deadline is approaching to send your write-up of your nomination for that special someone in your horseshoe circle who you think should be in the Missouri Horseshoe Pitchers Association Hall of Fame. Even though the deadline for submission isn t until June 1, it will be here before you know it! The Hall of Fame Committee will be accepting nominations for inductees into the MOHPA Hall of Fame for 2016 through June 1, 2016. 2015 NHPA Achievement Award By Joe Faron Bob Rogers of the Quail Ridge Horseshoe Club was the recipient of the 2015 NHPA Achievement Award. Bob is the designer of the Hall of Fame and Museum in Wentzville, Missouri. In 2006, an article appeared in the local newspaper (St. Charles County) about the signing of a lease between the NHPA/NHPF and the St. Charles County Parks Department to build a new NHPA Hall of Fame & Museum in Quail Ridge Park in Wentzville. Mary Lou Rogers (wife of Bob Rogers, graphic designer and owner of Gingko Design) noticed the article and contacted me to inquire about the project. She asked whether Bob could submit a concept for the project. It should be noted that Bob and Mary Lou live only about 3 miles from the New Melle Horseshoe Club. [Bob and I had never met before the initial meeting.] A meeting was scheduled at which Bob and I discussed Gingko s experience and capabilities. Bob agreed to produce exhibit concepts to demonstrate how the dedicated space might be developed. I took the concepts to the World Tournament in Gillette, Wyoming, to review with Dave Loucks and the NHPA Council. After the review, the NHPA Council asked me to get a second bid, at which time I asked St. Louis Design to submit a bid for the design and construction of the exhibits. After reviewing both bids, the NHPA council chose Gingko Designs, and Bob was notified. Bob proceeded to review all of the NHPA artifacts, documents, photographs, and other memorabilia. A design concept and floor plan were produced and approved, and work progressed on the individual display components. Exhibits were fabricated and installed. The original cost began at $100,000 and that was just for the museum. When Bob began the project, he was somewhat familiar with horseshoe pitching, mostly from picnics and family reunions. He recalls one day when his father came home from work and announced that he was going to practice and win the St. Louis church league championship. He had pitched horseshoes as a kid on a farm in Jackson, Missouri. He drove two stakes in the ground, began practicing every day for a few weeks, and won the tournament (both singles and doubles); he then came home, put the stakes and shoes away, and never pitched horseshoes again. Bob pitched with him sometimes during practice, but that was the extent of his horseshoe-pitching experience. The thing that most surprised and impressed Bob when he began delving into volumes of documents and items in the Hall of Fame collection was the level of organization and participation. Communicating this aspect of the sport became one of Bob s main objectives during the design and production of the exhibits. After finishing the project, Bob joined the local Quail Ridge Horseshoe Club and the NHPA and has remained a member. He continues to oversee the exhibits, keeping them maintained and updated, and develops new displays while working closely with Bob Dunn, NHPA Historian, and me, Joe Faron, NHPF Vice President and Facility Manager. Through the years, Bob has given the NHPA advice and has consulted on numerous projects, including highway signs, the Brick Plaza, the mural in the Jack Freeman courts, all signs and changes in the facility s lobby and café, brochures, and the design of the NHPA/NHPF flag. He also designed the Museum logo. We thank Bob Rogers for all for his tireless work.
