MARCHING HOME: Hobart will play six games in the month of March and will have home field advantage for five of those contests: Binghamton, Marist, Georgetown, Rutgers (Mar 24), and Fairfield (Mar 31). DOUBLE DUTY: Two Statesmen play more than one sport at Hobart. Junior midfielder DAN SPINELLA and sophomore defenseman JUSTIN HAGER helped the football team to the NCAA Tournament as a fullback (3.5 yds/att) and linebacker (40 tkls, INT), respectively. WELCOME TO THE CLUB: The Statesmen s 12-7 win over St. John s on April 22, 2006, was the 700th victory in the storied history of Hobart lacrosse. In 105 varsity seasons, the Statesmen have an all-time record of 703-407-20 (.631). Hobart is just the third collegiate lacrosse program to reach 700 wins, joining Johns Hopkins and Syracuse universities. COACH K: Head Coach Matt Kerwick is in his sixth season at the helm of his alma mater s lacrosse program. The 2002 Patriot League Coach of the Year has a 36-40 record at Hobart and is 88-71 in 11 seasons as a head coach, including three-year stints at Alfred University and Randolph-Macon College. Last summer, Kerwick served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Lacrosse team that earned a silver medal at the ILF World Championship. TEACHER vs. STUDENT: Today s sideline bosses, Hobart s Matt Kerwick and Georgetown s Dave Urick, are well acquainted with each other. Kerwick played on Urick s final three national championship teams at Hobart. Urick hired Kerwick to serve as an assistant coach for the Hoyas in 1999. CHAMPIONSHIP TRADITION: Hobart has made 25 appearances in the NCAA Tournament (4 Division I, 6 Division II, 15 Division III) and has won 16 national championships (1 USILA, 2 NCAA DII, 13 NCAA DIII). Hobart is one of only two schools to compete in the NCAA Tournament in all three divisions (Cortland State is the other). ON THE AIR: All of Hobart s lacrosse games are broadcast by WEOS-FM (89.7/90.3 in Geneva, 88.1 in Ithaca). Outside of WEOS s broadcast area, fans can tune into the station s streaming audio online at www.weos.org. Veteran radio man TED BAKER will describe the play-by-play, while Mike Black will provide the color commentary. HOBART S ONLINE HOME: The official online home of Hobart and William Smith Athletics is located at www.hws.edu/athletics. Fans can access schedules, box scores, statistics, rosters and more. SCOUTING THE HOYAS: Seventh-ranked Georgetown brings a 3-1 record to Geneva following a 9-8 win at No. 14 Delaware on Wednesday night. Andrew Brancaccio is tied for the team lead in goals (8) after scoring the game-winner with 4:38 remaining against the Blue Hens. Brendan Cannon leads the team in scoring with 13 points (6-7), while Andrew Baird (8-4) is one point behind. The Hoya defense, led by goalie Miles Kass (8.53 GAA,.564 SV%), is allowing just 8.5 goals per game. Chris Nixon and Kass lead the team with 19 ground balls each. Georgetown Head Coach Dave Urick is in his 18th season at Georgetown, following 10 seasons at Hobart, where he led the Statesmen to the first 10 Division III National Championships. Not surprisingly, Urick is a member of the Hobart Hall of Fame (Class of 1990).

2007 GAME RECAPS #25 Hobart vs #3 Syracuse (Feb 18, 2007 at Syracuse, N.Y.) Four unanswered goals late in the fourth quarter saved the third-ranked Syracuse lacrosse team from a second straight loss to Hobart. The Orange rallied from an 11-9 hole to post a 13-11 victory in front of 5,252 fans at the Carrier Dome, reclaiming the Kraus-Simmons Trophy. Daryl Veltman and Jeff Colburn led the Statesmen with two goals and two assists each. Attackman Dan Hardy paced the Orange with three goals and two assists. Nick Currie gave Hobart the early lead, scoring on the game s first shot just 30 seconds in with a laser from the right side of goalie Peter Coluccini (13 saves). Senior Brandon Baer stopped the first two shots he faced, before Syracuse countered with back-to-back goals. Baer turned in a spectacular first start in the cage, recording 15 saves, including several from point-blank. It was back and forth affair that saw the lead change hands five times. Colburn s second score with 13:17 remaining put Hobart on top 11-9, but it proved to be the final score of the contest for the Statesmen. Hobart held an 11-9 advantage on faceoffs entering the fourth quarter, but Syracuse turned things around in the final frame, winning five of six at the X. Dan Spinella won 12 of 26 restarts. The Statesmen had a 38-37 advantage on ground balls, led by Matt Smalley and Matthew Ranaghan with seven apiece. A-5252 T-2:08 Hobart vs Bucknell (Feb 24, 2007 at Brooklandville, Md.) Tim Brandau scored with 1:16 remaining in overtime to lift Bucknell to an 11-10 victory over Hobart. Brandau led the Bison with two goals and two assists. The loss overshadowed several exceptional individual performances. Jamie Kirk recorded a game-high eight points, the most since Daryl Veltman produced eight points at Canisius last season. Kirk dished out seven assists, including four feeds to Veltman, who finished with six goals, the most by a Hobart player since Feb. 23, 2003, when John Bogosian 03 netted six against Butler. Bogosian was also the last Hobart player to hand out seven helpers (March 24, 2001, vs. Lehigh). Dan Spinella dominated the faceoff X, winning 17 of the game s 25 restarts, including all 10 in the second quarter, while Matt Smalley collected a game-high 11 ground balls, many of them on faceoffs, leading the Statesmen to a 44-29 advantage in that category. Smalley s total is the most by a Hobart player since Tim Booth 03 recorded 11 against Lehigh on March 22, 2003. Bucknell carried a 9-8 lead into the fourth quarter, but with 12:02 remaining in regulation, the final Kirk to Veltman feed tied the game. Hobart claimed its final lead of the day with 86 seconds remaining when Veltman finished a feed from Nick Currie. The Bison won the ensuing faceoff and evened the match 39 seconds later on Perry Menzies third goal of the day to set up Brandau s heroics. 2007 GAME RECAPS Binghamton vs. Hobart (Mar 3, 2007 at Geneva, N.Y.) Hobart won its home opener, dispatching Binghamton 12-5 on McCooey Field, breaking open a close contest with nine second half goals. Three Statesmen recorded four points. Daryl Veltman netted four goals, while Jamie Kirk dished out four assists and Sean Murphy tallied two of each. Steve Carlson led the Bearcats with two goals and an assist, while Nate Kerstein added a pair of goals as well. Thanks to an assist from Kirk, Veltman scored the game s opening goal on the extra-man at 11:21. Nine minutes later, Murphy finished a feed from Kirk for a two-goal advantage. Binghamton won the ensuing faceoff and needed just eight seconds to record its first goal on a shot by Jake Boyce. Veltman, set up by Jeff Colburn, made it a 3-1 game with the only goal of the second quarter. The Statesmen started the third frame with back-to-back scores by Nick Currie and Colburn. Carlson interrupted Hobart s flow with his first goal, but the Statesmen responded with consecutive goals by Chris David and Murphy. Binghamton managed back-to-back goals spanning the third and fourth quarters to cut Hobart s lead to 7-4, but, with a behindthe-back shot, Veltman sparked a 4-0 run that put the home team firmly in control. Brandon Baer earned the win with eight saves, while Max Silberlecht turned away three shots in relief. Binghamton s Larry Kline made a career-high 16 saves. For the third straight game, Hobart won the battle for ground balls (40-27). Matt Ranaghan picked up a game-high seven GBs for the Statesmen. Hobart also enjoyed a strong showing at the faceoff X. Dan Spinella won 10 of the 16 restarts he took, helping the Statesmen to a 10-8 advantage. The Statesmen raced out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back in a 17-5 triumph over Hartford at Al-Marzook Field. Jeff Colburn scored a game-high five points (4-1) for the Statesmen. Hobart dominated every aspect of the contest, outshooting the Hawks 48-28, holding a 52-39 advantage on ground balls, and winning faceoffs 19-7. The Statesmen killed off all five of Hartford s extra-man opportunities and scored on their lone man-advantage. Hobart also rode their hosts relentlessly, as the Hawks were unsuccessful on 12-of-29 clear attempts. Daryl Veltman had three goals and an assist, raising his career total to 99 (65-34). Only five Statesmen have record 100 career points since Hobart moved to Division I in 1995. The Statesmen also got a goal and two assists apiece from Jamie Kirk and Sean Murphy. Faceoff specialist Dan Spinella posted a 14-3 record at the X and collected a team-high six ground balls. Brandon Baer earned the win, making nine saves in the first half. Max Silberlicht made two stops in the third quarter, while Brad Hester and first-year Kevin Gibbs combined for four stops in the fourth. The Hawks sent three goalies into the contest. John McMahon was saddled with the loss after making 12 stops in three quarters. Daniel Clough scored twice for Hartford. Colburn scored the game s first two goals, followed by a pair of Veltman tallies. Colburn capped the first quarter scoring with his third goal of the contest. The Hawks got on the board 25 seconds into the second quarter, but the Statesmen netted five of the next six goals to carry a 10-2 lead into halftime. Hobart cruised through the second half, subbing liberally, and secured its second straight win. 2007 GAME RECAPS Marist vs. Hobart (Mar 13, 2007 at Geneva, N.Y.) Daryl Veltman recorded the 100th point of his career while leading the Statesmen to a 10-5 victory over Marist on Mc- Cooey Field. Veltman netted a pair of goals and set up two more to raise his career total to 103 points. The junior needed just three and a half minutes and one shot to reach the 100-point plateau in his 32nd career game. He is the fastest of the sixth Division I Statesmen to reach that milestone, beating Nathan Roost 98 by one game. Hobart outscored the Red Foxes 4-1 in the first quarter and cruised to victory. The Statesmen won all of the major stat categories, outshooting their guests 45-31, collecting more ground balls (43-24), winning more faceoffs (13-6), and clearing at a much higher rate (91.6%-64.2). The Hobart defense was sharp all afternoon, but excelled in man-down situations, killing off all six of Marist s extra-man opportunities. Chris David netted a hat trick for the Statesmen, while Jamie Kirk handed out three assists. Jeff Colburn also contributed three points on two goals and an assist. Matt Smalley collected a game-high seven ground balls for Hobart, while Matt Ranaghan and Dan Spinella each picked up six. Spinella dominated the X, winning 12 of the 16 restarts he took. The Statesmen might have won by a much wider margin if not for Marist goalie Ryan Penner. The sophomore turned back 16 shots and helped his own cause with the second of the Red Foxes two first-half goals. With Hobart employing a 10-man ride, Penner saw Hobart starter Brandon Baer (9 saves) stray too far from his cage. Penner launched a shot from his own restraining box that bounced just inside the crease and hopped up just under the cross bar. Baer played 43 minutes before yielding to Brad Hester and Max Silberlicht, who combined for four saves in relief.
