October 2017 West Texas Fair & Rodeo Callahan County 4-H was well represented at the West Texas Fair & Rodeo. Blane Vinson, Grant Vinson, and Rayni Vinson showed Rabbits. Braiden Black, Brayli Collins, and Blane Pack showed Steers. Devin Burton, and Dillon Earles showed Swines. Trae Earles, Ryli Hollis, and Cassidy McLaughlin showed Heifers. Mikayla Kinslow, and Tara Kinslow showed Lambs. Ashlynn Vogler showed Goats. Devin Burton, Cassidy McLaughlin, and Grant Vinson participated in the Calf Scramble. Food & Nutrition Project meeting On September 20 th a Food & Nutrition Project meeting was held at the Extension Office. At the meeting members learned about all the different types of contests that the Food & Nutrtion Project offer. A few are the Food Show Individual members prepare a dish in one of four entry categories, the Food Challenge This is a Master Chef/Iron Chef contest with teams of 3-5 members, and the Food Bowl Quiz This is a Jeopardy type contest with teams of 4 members. If you are interested in participating in any of these contests please contact the Extension office. County Food Show On Saturday, October 28, 2017 we will be having our Callahan County 4-H Food Show. It will be held in the Callahan County Extension office, 2nd floor in the Courthouse in Baird. Judging will begin at 10:00 a.m. In order to participate in ANY 4-H event all youth must be an ACTIVE member on 4-H Connect at www.4honline.com before the event. If you need help with 4-H Connect please contact the Extension Office at (325) 854-5835 If you would like to participate in the County Contest you must email your recipe to the Extension Office, rbarcomb@ag.tamu.edu, no later than 5:00 p.m. on October 20 th. (All recipes must be typed in the body of the email. I will need to copy and paste it to the District 7 entry form and also email it to the District office. Recipes must include Name, Age Division and Category)

4-H AGE DIVISIONS The following contestant ages are as of August 31 Clover (2 nd grade and no less than 5 years old)- County contest only Clovers are not eligible for the County Livestock Show, see rule #1 in the show book, Shooting Sports, or Horse Shows Junior - age 8 and in the 3 rd grade, grades 3 rd, 4 th, 5 th Intermediate grades 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th Senior grades 9 th, 10 th, 11 th, and 12 th (contestant must not have reached their 18 th birthday on or before August 31) Contest Categories: Protein: All foods made from meat, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, processed soy products, nuts, and seeds are considered part of the Protein Foods Group. Beans and peas are also part of the Vegetable Group. Examples in this category are: Dishes that contain meat or meat alternative such as eggs, dry beans, peas or peanut butter. Fruits & Vegetables: Any fruit or 100% fruit juice counts as part of the Fruit Group. Fruits may be fresh, canned, frozen, or dried, and may be whole, cut-up, or pureed. Any vegetable or 100% vegetable juice counts as a member of the Vegetable Group. Vegetables may be raw or cooked; fresh, frozen, canned, or dried/dehydrated; and may be whole, cut-up, or mashed. Vegetables are organized into 5 subgroups, based on their nutrient content. Examples in this category are: Dishes that accompany a main dish (salads, relish trays, cooked fruits and vegetables). Grains: Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is a grain products. Grains are divided into 2 subgroups, Whole Grains and Refined Grains. Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel-the bran, germ, and endosperm. Examples in this category are: Quick, yeast, bread mixes, rice, pasta. Dairy: Dishes selected must contain minimum of a half serving of dairy. All fluid milk products and many foods made from milk are considered part of this food group. Most Dairy Group choices should be fat -free or low -fat. Foods made from milk that retain their calcium content are part of the group. Foods made from milk that have little to no calcium, such as cream cheese, cream, and butter, are not. Calcium -fortified soymilk (soy beverage) is also part of the Dairy Group. Examples in this category are: (macaroni and cheese, drinks, custards, cheese logs, etc.) Question, MyPlate, and Nutrients at a Glance packets are available upon request. Just contact the office with your age division and we will email them to you. Printed copies are available at the office for pick up. At the District contest Fancy or elaborate placemats, linens, centerpieces, candles, etc., are not allowed. However, at the County Food show it is allowed. The District Contest will be held on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at the Taylor County Expo Center Big Country Hall in Abilene. All 1 st Place winners will advance to the District competition. All County participants that will be advancing to District will be entered into the District contest by the Extension Office. The $5 fee for the District contest will need to be paid to the Extension office. If you have any questions please contact the Extension Office.

ATTENTION Livestock Show Participants! ALL 4-H members showing animals must be an approved 4-H member no later than NOVEMBER 1 st. ALL 4-H members showing animals at Major shows must have taken the Quality Counts test and have a Quality Counts number. 4-H members MUST participate in their Jr. Livestock associations in order to make the sale at the County show. MAJOR SHOW ENTRY NIGHT (November 9 th ) If you plan on taking your animal projects to any of the major livestock shows (Odessa, Fort Worth, San Angelo, San Antonio, Houston, and Austin) you must have your entries turned in by November 9 th. Entry forms are available at the Extension Office and everyone is encouraged to enter as soon as possible. November 9 th will be the latest that entries will be accepted. The Extension office on Thursday, November 9 th until 6:00 p.m. to accept entries.
