MISSOURI RIVER LODGE X-Stream Fly Fishing & X-Stream Hunting 2012 Year End News Letter Wow what a Great Season!!! We would like to Thank All of You that came out and made this a Wonderful Year!!! Once again our spring fishing did not disappoint anyone. It was a mild weather year in the spring and this produced our best dry fly fishing of the year. Very low water with midges and Blue Wing Olives brought these big fish to the surface. The air temperature this year was very comfortable (in the 60-70 degrees) and very little wind. We had many 50+ fish days this spring and would love to see more of you book a trip for this up and coming year to try your hand at the Missouri River Spring Time fishing. As we moved into June, it seemed as if the fish Gods brought out the wind. Again the air temperature was in the 70 s and the fishing was good. We did not get very much run off this year due to the low snow pack, but it just seemed to blow hard every day this June. July followed with no wind but our air temperatures soared into the 90 s every day. As the water temperature stayed into the high 50 s and low 60 s the fishing was insane. The caddis and PMD s were in full force. However the writing was on the wall that how long would this last. The weather was warming, the water too fast and there was not enough snow pack to keep it cool. August rolled around with the hope of hoppers to keep the fishing
going through the dog days of summer. It was the worst year I have ever seen for the grass hoppers. There were very few real hoppers around which made the fishing very tough through the heat in August. The lake above the Land of the Giants turned over a month early which made that fishing go from 40-50 hookups to around a dozen a day. This made it pretty tough to get through the month of August. However we manage to get everyone into enough fish to make everyone happy. September could not come soon enough. The low water and high air temperatures made the river full of grass. The lower river was almost impossible to fish with all the weeds floating down stream. We were constantly cleaning weeds off our flies, but if your flies got into the water clean it usually produced a fish. We finally got some cooler nights which started dropping the water temperature and the river began to come alive again. October was very similar to our Spring time fishing. All the fish in the river were back in that optimal water temperature and it seemed like every fish in the river was up feeding again. The leaves were all changing into their fall colors and the fishing was spectacular. We had an awesome group of 8 guys brave the elements and come and fish in November. Of course the weather can be unpredictable and it was. The first day was in the 40 s, and the second and third days it snowed and got into the high 20 s and low 30 s. These brave guys battled the elements and it paid off. They were the only ones on the river and caught fish at will. This goes to show that the spring and fall fishing are well worth it if you re willing to add a few extra layers of clothes. All in all we made it through a challenging, but great year of fishing. We urge you to book your trips early as we are already starting to fill up. Take a good long look at your spring and fall calendars and see if there is a time that that will work for you. You can call or email us to reserve your dates today.
2012 Big Fish of the Year Well it was a very interesting year with our biggest fishing coming from the lower river in May. This fish stayed on the board until the first week in August when Janice Maki landed a very large 26 ½ inch brown trout. Janice is our first woman to win the big fish of the year! She was done fishing this hole and was going to give it to her husband. With a little needling from me and her husband she made one more cast and hooked into this monster. Janice managed to battle this beast and do everything right to get him into the net. Janice and her husband come every year for their anniversary and this year we gave them an anniversary present to remember for a life time!!! Way to go Janice (Girl Power)!!! She will get her name on our plaque and receive a free day of guided fishing next year during our 2013 season.
