CELEBRATING 22 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Kansas City Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - March 2014 President s Report Dear Fellow Golfers: Is it Spring yet?! We are getting close. Be sure to sign up for our first 2014 golfing event on April 12. Sign-up sheets will be at the General Meeting on the 20th. I want to give you a little teaser on an upcoming summer event on July 12. Mara Kelley and Bob McDonald will be sponsoring an all expenses paid (by Bob and Mara) golf outing with cocktails and dinner afterwards at the Golf Club of Leawood (formerly Leawood South GC) for a select few of our members. Here s how it works: At our April, May, and June general meeting Randy Gerard will be selling tickets to raffle off the winners. During our June meeting, Randy will randomly draw seven tickets to determine the winners for this event. At some point before the event, those seven members will select a partner of the opposite sex to accompany them to the July 12 event. Bob and Mara will then take those 14 members and along with themselves, determine the 4 foursomes that will be playing on July 12th. More than likely you will not be playing with your chosen partner. Because of the significant value of this event, the raffle ticket prices will be a little more than our normal raffles 1 ticket for $5 and 5 tickets for $20. The proceeds of this raffle will be used to help fund portions of our special events such as the Awards Banquet, road trips, etc. (Thank you, Bob and Mara, for your generous contribution.) Tickets can only be purchased in person at the April/May/June general meetings. Bob and Mara sponsored a similar event last year of which I was able to participate. The 14 members that are lucky enough to participate this year are in for a fantastic treat. We will be discussing this event in more detail in our meeting on the 20th. Remember: That rake by the sand trap is there for golfers who feel guilty about skipping out on lawn work. ~Dohn Kennyhertz, President Golf Chair Report The playing schedule is now complete. The only steps left are to confirm exact tee times, fees and event hosts. KCSGA is playing about 18 courses in 2014 - a great mix of the old reliables like Creekmore, Winterstone and Prairie Highlands, but also a few new courses like Eagles Landing and Eagles Bend. Courses run the gamut from the easier courses like Drum Farm to the toughies like Ironhorse. We are trying to make things easier for everyone, especially the hosts, by paying at the course. There will still be additional monies needed for any prizes, mulligans and the hole-in-one fund. Hopefully, everyone will be responsible and show-up if they have previously signed-up. A major push this year will be pace-ofplay. KCSGA has consulted with several tournament directors and received their input on completing a round in a reasonable time frame. So, here s to an exciting new year with KCSGA. Come and join us for the fun. Upcoming Events Include (see SinglesGolf.com/events) Memorial Day Weekend - May 22-25, 2014. Colonial Williamsburg, VA. And "all" was a lot. We had over 40 folks attending! We had a few from "meet-up" and some old members we hadn't seen in a while, too. The consensus is, "Less snow, more warm weather! We are all ready to play!" And that time is just around the corner. There has been some discussion about why we are starting the First Fridays at 4pm. Friday after work is a primo time at most of the establishments we have used, so we need to be there around 4 to get tables reserved. PLEASE, don t let that deter you from coming out later if 4pm is too early for you. We will still be there till the last golfer drops! Put time aside on your calendars for our April First Friday at Chuys on the Plaza. Chuys is where Figlios used to be located on the 2 nd floor at 47th and JC Nichols Parkway, overlooking the JC Nichols fountain. Chuys has a happy hour "Nacho Bar" from 4-6 with chips, ground meat, beans and fixings for nachos and various drink specials. We will be there starting at 4 and ending... when the last person heads out the door! Don t forget to mark your calendars for Casino Night, Saturday, April 19th. More information to follow from our gracious hostess of this event, Debbie Opfer. A fun time is guaranteed! ~Susie Harwood, Social Co-Chair 2014 Golfing with The Golf Guru For those of you that have met me and those who will meet me and for those that should meet me, I am Barney Coomes the Golf Guru of Orlando and all over Florida. I am proud to say I am a born and raised Missouri boy, lived in St. Louis, Kansas City, and Overland Park, I had to move on to the Bright Lights of New York City and have missed all that good BBQ, the Chiefs, and Cardinals. I want to thank all of the KC chapter that are coming to the 2014 Sunshine Fling at Mission Inn Resort. Those wonderful ladies that came in 2013 did one hell of a sales job to your chapter, thank you Konnee, Rhonda, and Judy. For those of you coming to join the FUN, remember to bring the GURU some BBQ. sauce. You all will be leaving all that cold and snow, and we have warm weather sunshine, wonderful food, great golf courses, dancing, and many more things for you to enjoy. Please be sure and mark your 2015 March calendars for yet another TBD site for another fun time. The Orlando chapter has decided to adopt all those that have been down playing some golf and working on their tan lines. They have enjoyed the weather and some very good golf courses to play. These wonderful people are always welcome with the Orlando chapter, you all have a second home with Orlando. I have to thank Bob Haefele for putting so much work into getting everyone all organized to play with our chapter, but we do wonder why Bob putts with a little kids putter, maybe Bob should try a BIG BOY putter and he could sink some birdie putts on our tricky greens. I got a few good tips from Mark Slater about ASGA and I have been in the golf business all my life, thanks Mark. Now I know who to always pair myself with in a shamble, give me Donna Deleon every week, this chick hits a long ball and with new clubs to boot. Now we even let guys who play from the wrong side of the ball join us, so Tom Piepmeier you come back again to Orlando and I will schedule a left handers course for you. The winner of the prettiest smile goes to Alleyne Johnson, WOW what a smile and I worked with some top female models in New York and hers is a solid 10. Our little firecracker from the Philippines, Luisa you made so many Orlando people HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY, I wish you were around more to get these Orlando people smiling more. Corrine and Sandra, I know you girls had a good time, even if the first day of golf at Disney was tough, I know you enjoyed the course and we want you to come back and visit. Of course Orlando and myself can not forget to mention Barb Gawlik she is special and not just because I have her as a smoke buddy, she really does care about people and some of you do not know my problems, Barb does and she knows just what to say and do, Love you Barb. Now how in the world can we not mention Frank Chop. We could, but we won't. I thought I had the ugliest swing in golf,

guess what? Now I don't, Frank's is worse than mine. As we call him in Orlando, Pork Chop does have some game, and he sure enjoys the ladies in Orlando, you go Frank. I will end this little article with a THANKS again for your club s support of the Sunshine Fling. We invite anyone from KC to join Orlando anytime you come to Florida for a visit. I will see and meet the rest of you at Mission Inn. DO NOT FORGET MY BBQ SAUCE. All the ladies you save a dance for me. Gentlemen, I will introduce you to some nice ladies to dance and play golf with. ~Barney, Golf Guru Who said..?? 1. Ninety percent of putts that are short don t go in. 2. There is, and always will be, room for improvement. 3. Why quit? Your clubs have no idea how old you are. 4. I just it as hard as I can, and if I find the ball, I hit it again. 5. Do your best one shot at a time and then move on. Remember that golf is just a game. We re Not Getting Any Younger While we re young it s a slogan popularized by the United States Golf Association (USGA) to encourage greater awareness by golfers of their pace of play. As much fun as we have golfing with our ASGA friends, perhaps one of the most commonly heard complaints we hear (beside lipped-out par putts) are 5+ hour golf rounds. Have you spent a lot of time waiting to take tee or approach shots, or has your foursome found wide-open fairways and greens because the previous foursome was already several holes ahead? Occasionally, we do encounter circumstances beyond our control. However, more often than not, the issue is pace of play. Next time you re at a golf course (and, really, it won t be that much longer), look at your scorecard or posted signs on the course. Increasingly, courses are using the USGA Pace Rating System or similar means to provide a gauge as to how quickly they should be completing their rounds: typically, 2 to 2¼ hours for the front or back nine holes. When your round starts to extend beyond 4½ hours, well, foot a tappin, you start muttering, C mon folks, while we re young. Pace of play is an issue, and it s an issue we re already encountering even as we line up our 2014 season course schedule. We re returning to some of our favorite courses of past years, and we d like to be given preferential tee times as repeat customers, but we re not alone. The question we re being asked is: If we let your group start earlier, is your last foursome going to finish so we can let others tee off after you and complete their round? It s no fun when the marshal follows your group or, worse, asks you to skip a hole. It s also no fun or fair for the other players in your group if your pace of play is holding up the works. Our membership is a diverse group with golfers of all skill levels, all of whom are welcomed and encouraged to play with us, enjoying and experiencing all of the courses where we play. Those of you who have played with us in past seasons have seen our hints for keeping up the pace of play; we ll continue to share them with you when we post the pairings for our events. Lower handicap players often use the Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) guidelines, and pick up their ball at double or triple bogey. Higher handicap players (like me) should play to a maximum of double par (and that includes your mulligan or provisional shot). Let s face it, how much fun can you have on a single hole? The USGA offers My Pace of Play Pledge : As one who loves golf, I understand my critical role in improving pace of play. I will examine my own habits on the golf course to identify ways that I can pick up the pace. I will Tee It Forward and play from the set of tees best suited to my driving distance, in an effort to speed up play and have more fun. I will practice ready golf during stroke play; I will hit when I am ready to play, but only when it is safe to do so. I will serve as an example for those around me and I will strive to inspire and guide my fellow golfers to improve their pace of play. I understand that golf course design and setup can affect pace of play, and I promise to support those who manage the facilities where I play to find solutions for optimizing pace of play. I will seek out golf professional to help me improve my game and my pace of play.i will embrace opportunities to play nine holes when my schedule doesn t allow for an 18-hole round. I will encourage others to take the Pace of Play Pledge, for the good of the game. I will play more quickly, play better and have more fun! Are you ready to take the pledge? More suggestions for improving the pace of your golf round are available at: http://www.usga.org/ We re all looking forward to a fantastic 2014 golf season! Who said.. Answers
