They are happy to share with me their ideas and they respectfully use their voice to share their thoughts about improving Irymple SC. Yesterday at Assembly I had the pleasure along with all the students and staff to hear some amazing stories about student successes in China, in the National Maths Competition, in Sport and in their own form groups. DID YOU KNOW THAT WE HAVE A YEAR 10 STUDENT IN THE TOP 1% OF STUDENTS IN MATHS IN AUSTRALIA? This student is SAM FANGALOKA and I am so proud of his achievements and congratulate all those who have supported Sam to achieve such a magnificent achievement. I congratulate his parents Kerry and Sioeli, Nichols Point Primary School, Irymple Secondary College Maths teachers and of course Sam himself for the diligence he displays towards his learning. I am really confident that the world is Sam s oyster and I genuinely look forward to learning of his achievements as he moves through into adulthood. We got a taste of what promises to be great entertainment with our Variety show this week. The kids performing deserve to be congratulated and supported with a full house at the Arts Centre this week. If you haven t purchased a ticket yet please contact the office and grab one so that you along with myself can sit in the audience and feel proud of what our kids and staff can achieve in their areas of passion. At assembly I shared with the kids my passions and where I come from, I urged them to join with me and the staff to change the conversations about Irymple SC to be positive ones and to BE PART OF SOMETHING GREAT ALL IN NO EXCUSES. I really believe we can do this because we want to do this and now I urge all of you to jump on board and make this happen. Please like our Facebook page www.facebook.com/irymplesc/ and start the journey of positivity with us. EXCELLENCE IN MUSIC The following students undertook ANZCA music exams at the end of last term. They were tested on their performing ability, theory, aural and general knowledge in their chosen instruments/voice. These students under the direction of Marcus Hennig and Bianca Deckert put in extra hours of work to prepare their students for examination which was done in front of an adjudicator from Melbourne. We are very proud to announce the following results: Chloe Niutta Modern Singing, Honours Chloe Niutta Modern Guitar, First Class Honours Emily Schmidt Modern Guitar, First Class Honours Benjamin Coronica Modern Guitar, First Class Honours Latara Trigg - Modern Singing, Honours Brooklyn Trigg Modern Singing, Honours Bianca Deckert, Marcus Hennig PAGE 3 China Speech at Assembly 19/10/16 At the end of term 3, 13 year 10 students embarked on a trip to China. Some of the main highlights that we were involved in during our stay included; speaking in front of a classroom full of Chinese students, tasting a range of new foods, trying our hand at Tai Chi and Calligraphy and visiting the magnificent sights that Dali has to offer. This included the Lake Erhai cruise, Cangshan Mountain, The Three Pagodas, Temples, a Tea factory and the Dali Old Town. We also visited the Dinosaur Valley which is one of the most prolific sites for dinosaur remains in the world. After we had visited some of the tourist attractions on offer, from Day 4 11 we stayed with our host families and experienced life as part of a Chinese family. During this time we attended school with our host student as well as visiting a range of sites in the Dali region. On Day 12 we farewelled our host families and travelled to Lijiang to experience the Lijiang Ancient Town. On Day 13 we travelled from Lijiang to Xian. There, we visited Xian s ancient city wall and the Drum and Bell towers. On Day 14 we were all very excited to visit the Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum. This has been named the 8 th Wonder of the World. This was a real highlight for many of the students and staff. This was followed by a visit to the Shangxi Provincial Museum. That night we travelled by Bullet Train to Beijing. Day 15 was a big day as we visited the Great Wall of China. We were able to climb sections of the Wall and we will treasure the memories and photos of this experience. After lunch, we went shopping at at a local market where we attempted to try out our bartering skills.

Day 16 was our last day of sightseeing and we got to walk around in Tiananmen Square and see the Forbidden City. That evening we got a transfer to the airport to begin the long journey home. Through the exchange program, we were exposed to many cultural experiences that hold a far greater meaning than simply learning it through text books or the internet. We also made lifelong friendships with our host families who we will be keeping in touch with. If anyone is considering being a part of the China PAGE 4 Exchange Program, please come and talk to any of the 13 students that participated in it this year and we can tell you just how worthwhile and lifechanging it was. A big thank you to Mrs Douglas and Miss Callahan for allowing us to have this opportunity. The amount of time and effort you put in to this trip to make it run smoothly is very much appreciated. - Sarah Willis Loddon Mallee Region and State Athletics Championships Irymple Secondary College had a small representation at the Loddon- Mallee Region Athletics carnival held in Bendigo Thursday October 6 th with 9 competitors attending the meet. All competitors must be commended on their behaviour and for performing so well, especially considering the early start to the day for most of us who travelled by bus (we were on the road by just before 5:00am.) Three students travelled down with parents for the competition. We had 3 individual winners as well a number of podium finishes. Winners on the day were; Lachie Robertson who won the blue ribbon double in the 15 Yrs Boys 100m and 200m; Annabel Hocking who won the 14 Yrs Girls Discus and Julian Rayner who won the 12-15 Yrs Boys 1500m walk. Other results from the day were: Jordan Sievewright - equal 2 nd in the Girls 15 Yrs High Jump. Lochie Lloyd - 2 nd in the 12-15 Yrs Boys 1500m walk. Mele Lateau - 3 rd in the Girls 15 Yrs Discus. Chloe Barker - 3 rd in the Girls 13 Yrs 100m, 4 th in the Triple Jump and 8 th in the 1500m. Jordan Stainer - 4 th in the 14 Yrs 1500m. Lachie and Annabel competed in the State Championships which were held today, Thursday October 20 th at the State Athletics Centre at Albert Park in Melbourne. In news just to hand, Annabel threw 21.24m to claim 3 rd place and a bronze medal in her Discus event, while Lachie ran a very creditable 4 th in both his 100m and 200m events with tomes of 11.62 sec and 23.6 sec respectively. It should be noted that both Annabel and Lachie were up against some very strong opposition with winners in all 3 of their events breaking state records! Great efforts and congratulations Annabel and Lachie! We would like to thank all competitors for their behaviour and effort throughout the day and congratulate our winners for their success.
