JASON GARRETT (26-25 4th Year, 31-28 overall) Jason Garrett was named the eighth head coach in Dallas Cowboys history on January 5, 2011. Garrett became the first former Dallas Cowboys player to become the team s head coach. As a backup quarterback during his playing career in Dallas, he started nine-of-23 games played and was a member of teams that won six division titles and three Super Bowl championships. Garrett was elevated to the Cowboys top job after taking over as the team s interim head coach at the midway through 2010. He guided the club to a 5-3 mark to finish the season after the team started 1-7. During his time as the interim head coach, three of Dallas wins were against teams that posted a 10-win season, while the three losses were decided by a combined total of seven points. He led Dallas to an 8-8 record, narrowly missing the playoffs and an NFC East Division title in his first three full seasons as head coach (2011, 2012 and 2013). Since the 2007 season, Garrett has been the Cowboys offensive coordinator, and in 2008, he was assigned the additional duties of being the club s assistant head coach. Under Garrett, the Dallas offense has reached high levels of productivity in several categories, and the unit has finished among the NFL s top-10 in total offense five times: 2013 (10th), 2012 (sixth), 2010 (10th), 2009 (2nd), and 2007 (2nd). From the start of the 2007 season, the club has averaged 24.6 points-pergame and 366.4 total yards-per-outing. The team has set singleseason records in a handful of categories, including cumulative numbers for gross passing yards (29,107) and total points (2,756) that represent the best totals over a seven-year span in the history of the organization while the club s 41,041 total net yards are second. Garrett returned to Dallas in 2007 as the offensive coordinator. He entered the coaching profession as the quarterbacks coach for two seasons (2005-06) for Nick Saban s first Miami Dolphins club. COWBOYS & MILLER LITE Miller Lite, is hosting a showdown between two celebrities at the Sept. 28 Dallas Cowboys game. Danny Trejo, best known for his role in Machete, and Richard Rawlings from Discovery Channel s Fast N Loud, will battle it out to see who can outsell the other for the opportunity to have a $10,000 donation made in their name to the Adelante! U.S. Education Leadership Fund, which focuses on leadership development and education for college students. The Miller Lite Corral, located on the west side of the stadium, will be buzzing during the Hispanic Heritage Month game so make sure to stop by to cheer on your favorite team. (21+) HEAD COACHES SEAN PAYTON (80-45, 8th Year) Sean Payton was named the 14th head coach in Saints history on Jan. 18, 2006 and has led the team to five playoff appearances, three NFC South titles, two NFC Championship berths and the Super Bowl XLIV title. He earned unanimous NFL Coach of the year honors in his first season in 2006 and received the same honors from some outlets in 2009. Payton is considered one of the NFL s brightest offensive minds, and the Saints have ranked among the league s top-10 offenses each season since his arrival, including finishing first in the NFL (with a league record 7,474 yards) in 2011, in addition to 2009, 2008 and 2006. With the Dallas Cowboys (2003-05), he served as the assistant head coach/passing game coordinator in 2005 after spending his first two seasons as assistant head coach/quarterbacks. Payton coached four years with the New york Giants (1999-2002), the last three seasons as offensive coordinator, and was quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles (1997-98). He earned a degree in communications at Eastern Illinois, where he departed with a schoolrecord 10,665 passing yards, then the third-highest total in NCAA Division I-AA history. A three-time All-American, Payton had brief playing stops with Chicago of the Arena League, the CFL s Ottawa Rough Riders and the Chicago Bears in 1987. Payton coached collegiately at San Diego State (1988-89, 1992-93), Indiana State (1990-91), Miami (Ohio) in 1994-95, and Illinois (1996). The Vikings added another Walsh field goal in the third quarter (40) that trimmed the lead to 13-9. However, the Saints put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter when Brees found Marques Colston for an 18-yard scoring connection that provided the final 20-9 score. DALLAS LAST GAME The Dallas Cowboys ended their two-game road trip with their first win streak of the 2014 season, capping off the largest nonovertime comeback win in team history with a 34-31 thrilling victory. DeMarco Murray became only the third running back in team history to rush for 100 yards in three consecutive games to open a season, grinding out 100 yards on 24 carries and scoring a touchdown in his third straight game. St. Louis started the game with a 15-play, 80-yard drive that took 8:50 off the clock and ended with a one-yard touchdown pass from Austin Davis to Lance Kendricks, Davis first-career touchdown pass. The Rams then scored two touchdowns off Cowboys turnovers, turnving a Murray fumble into a 51-yard touchdown pass to Brian Quick, and returning a Tony Romo interception 25 yards for a touchdown. Dallas answered the interception return touchdown with an 80-yard drive down the field, culminating in a Murray touchdown, and then recovered a St. Louis fumble to convert a Dan Bailey field goal before the first half ended, pulling to within 11 points. Dallas came out of the gates on fire, scoring on the first drive of the second half with a 68-yard touchdown connection from Romoto-Bryant and then added a 40-yard Bailey field goal to pull within one point. Greg Zeurlein kicked a 28-yard field goal, and then Dallas scored quickly on a 12-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Williams, its fifth-straight offensive possession with a score. Bruce Carter sealed the victory with a 25-yard interception return for a touchdown off Davis, and despite a late Rams touchdown from Austin Pettis, Dallas was able to run out the clock for its second win of the season. It was the third time in his career he completed 100% of his second half passes. The last time was against Philadelphia (12/2/12) - 10-of-10 for 169 yards with three touchdowns - and the first was at Arizona (11/12/06) - 10-of-10 for 144 yards with one touchdown. In recent history of the organization, only Randall Cunningham (at Arizona, 9/10/00) completed all of his passes through one half. It was in the first half of the 31-32 loss where he completed all 12 of his passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Besides the three flawless halfs mentioned above, there have been nine times in recent team history that a quarterback completed all but one pass (10-or-more attempts). The most recent was Kyle Orton (nine-of-10) against Chicago (10/1/12). Romo accomplished the feat three times and Troy Aikman did it five times. Romo had flashes of perfection in the 2013 opener, completing 13 straight passes in the second quarter, finishing the frame 16-of-19. Included in his 65 wins as a starter are 21 occassions in which he led the team to a come-from-behind victory in the fourth quarter or overtime. Romo s 21 are a franchise-best, and in 2012 he had three straight games in which he had a comefrom-behind win. Romo had his first come-back win this season in the Week 9 game against Minnesota (11/3). He led Dallas on a nineplay, 90-yard drive that culminated with a seven-yard touchdown pass for the win. He did it again to keep the season alive at Washington (12/22), leading the team to 10 fourth quarter points. Romo led his offense to first comeback win of the 2014 season at St. Louis (9/21) as the team battled back from 21 points down to overcome the most points to win a game in a non-overtime game in franchise history. ROLLING ON T-DUB S Drafted in the third round (74th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Baylor, Terrance Williams came to Dallas as a big-body, strong receiver with the ability to stretch the field. He started to emerge as the player the Cowboys were counting on as the rookie finished with 44 catches (fourth on the team, 10th among league rookies) for 736 yards (third on the team, third among rookies) and five touchdowns (third, tied for fourth among rookies). His 16.7 yard-per-catch average was third among rookies with at least 10 catches, and his 82-yard touchdown (vs. Denver, 10/6) tied for the sixth-longest catch in the league this season. From Week 5-8, Williams had a touchdown catch in each game, the first time in team history a rookie had a streak of four games with a touchdown reception. SHUTTING OUT EACH HALF Despite being behind 28-3 by halftime against San Francisco (9/7), the Dallas Cowboys defense responded in the second half by not allowing a single point in either the third or fourth quarters. It was the unit s first shutout of an opposing team s defense in the second half since against Buffalo (11/13/11). The last time a Cowboys defense had shutout an opponent s offense during either half in came in 2013 during the first half at Philadelphia (10/20) where the scoreless streak extended through the first three quarters. The defense also stiffened in the final two quarters against the 49ers, allowing only 119 total yards compared to the 200 total yards given up in the first half. The Cowboys defense continued their shutout streak into their next game at Tennessee (9/14), holding the Titans offense scoreless in the first two quarters. The defense also limited Tennessee to 68 total offensive yards in the first half, two first downs and did not allow a successful third-down conversion. Though Tennessee scored in the third quarter to break up the shutout, the defense continued to stifle the Titans offense on third downs, holding them to two-of-10 (20.0%) overall to finish the game. TAKE IT AWAY The Dallas Cowboys recorded their first two takeaways of the season at Tennessee (9/14), as both Barry Church and Rolando McClain intercepted Titans passer Jake Locker. Church s interception in the second quarter marked the first takeaway of the year, and the second of his career. McClain made an acrobatic snag of Locker s pass in the fourth quarter to register as the second of his career. The Cowboys added a season-high three takeaways at St. Louis (9/21) behind a Henry Melton fumble recovery and interceptions by Bruce Carter and Morris Claiborne - both in the fourth quarter to help clinch the win. The Cowboys defense finished the 2013 season with 28 takeaways, fifth for the club since 2000, and have five to begin 2014. Dallas Cowboys Year-by-Year Takeaways (since 2005) SACK ATTACK From 2007-2011 Dallas racked up at least 35 sacks each season, but fell short in 2012, posting 34. The 2013 team finished with 34 once again, and since the 2006 season, Dallas has totaled 329 sacks - fourth in the league over that span: NFL Team Sack Leaders - since 2006 Team Sacks Miami Dolphins...334 Minnesota Vikings...334 Pittsburgh Steelers...333 Dallas Cowboys...329 Philadelphia Eagles...328 Over the previous five seasons, Dallas single-season sack high was 42 in 2011. Helping that total were the four sacks the club had in the first half of the game at Arizona (12/4). It was the 11th time in team history the team had four-or-more first half sacks, and the first since having five against Baltimore (12/20/08). The Dallas defense produced one sack against San Francisco (9/7) with Bruce Carter s takedown of Colin Kaepernick. The defense doubled their performance with two in its next game at Tennessee (9/14) as Rolando McClain gathered one and Henry Melton and Kyle Wilber split the other sack of Jake Locker. CHURCH IN SESSION Barry Church made his mark on the Cowboys defense in 2013, turning in a team-leading and career-best 147 tackles, bouncing back after missing the majority of the 2012 season after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon three weeks into the season. Church posted eight games with 10-or-more tackles in 2013 - most on the defense - including a career-high 17 at New Orleans (11/10/13). Church s 147 tackles in 2013 were the third-most by a Cowboys safety, and the 11th most overall by any Cowboys defender, dating back to 1989: Most Tackles by a Cowboys Safety - Single Season Tackles Brock Marion, 1997...158 Darren Woodson, 1993...155 Barry Church, 2013...147 Darren Woodson, 1995...144 Darren Woodson, 1998...136 Darren Woodson, 2001...131 Darren Woodson, 1999...128 Roy Williams, 2002...127 Bill Bates, 1988...124 Darren Woodson, 2000...123 ROLANDO S NFL RETURN Rolando McClain, the former eighth overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders, joined the Dallas Cowboys via trade from the Baltimore Ravens on July 1, 2014. In each of his first three seasons (2010-12) with the Raiders he compiled over 85+ tackles, finishing in the top-five amongst Oakland s top tacklers each year. Overall, he compiled 274 stops, 6.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss and an interception in 41 games with 38 starts. Following his release by Oakland on April 5, 2013, he signed a one-year contract with Baltimore on April 12, but retired from the NFL on May 15 and was out of football for the 2013 season. McClain was reinstated from the Reserve/Retired list on April 14, 2014, but abruptly retired once more on April 23. However, upon his trade to Dallas, he was reinstated and particpated in training camp and the preseason with the Cowboys where he finished fifth on the defense with 11 tackles and a forced fumble. Due to McClain s strong play in the preseason, he earned the starting role at middle linebacker for the 2014 season. In his first game action since his last game with Oakland on Nov. 25, 2012, he started at middle linebacker for the Cowboys against San Francisco (9/7) and led the team with 12 tackles - tied for the second-highest tackle total of his career - and a quarterback hurry. He followed that up leading the team in tackles once more at Tennessee (9/14) with 10 stops while also adding a sack, tackle for loss, his second career interception and a pass breakup. He missed the Week 3 game at St. Louis (9/21) due to a groin injury. Through the first three games, McClain is second on the Cowboys defense with 22 stops. TOP-FIVE PUNTER Chris Jones, a former 2011 undrafted free agent, has made his way the Dallas Cowboys, securing the job as the team s punter in 2012 but a knee injury hampered his progress and eventually landed him on the Reserve/Injured list. He returned in 2013 for a career-year, playing in all 16 games for the first time to post career-highs in multiple categories. In 2014 he has gotten off to a hot start, as both his gross punting average and net average are in the top-five in the NFL. His 50.6 gross average is fourth in the league, second in the NFC, while his 43.9 net average is fifth in the NFL, third in the NFC, following the first three games of the season. At Tennessee (9/14) he punted four times to establish a career-best 55.0 gross average. 19
