Dear student, First of all, I d like to thank you for choosing Legends Martial Arts. These days, it seems there is a dojo (karate school) on every other street corner, and we are incredibly honored that you selected Legends Martial Arts as your school! We will do our very best to see that you are instructed with safety, courtesy and enthusiasm. If at any time there is something that you would like to discuss, you are ALWAYS free to call or email with any questions or concerns that you might have. Again, I thank you and welcome you to your training in Legends Martial Arts! Grandmaster J. Pat Burleson Using the Web Site: 1. Go to www.lmamembers.com 2. Calendar All upcoming events, belt tests, holiday school closings, tournaments, kids nights out, curriculum focus, etc. will be on the calendar. We DO close the Dojo for belt tests and tournaments, so make sure to check the website calendar before coming on a Saturday. 3. Classes This button on the navigation bar will take you to the page where all the address and class time information is available for the main dojo and also for all the satellite locations across the metroplex. 4. Instructors If you need the contact information for a private lesson with a particular instructor, or if you d like more of their background and credentials, you can find them on the instructors button on the navigation bar. 5. Tournaments The next tournament we are supporting will always be on this page with the information for registration available. Competition is important to keep our skills and character SHARP!

Class Dress Code To begin with, a student must remove all jewelry (including piercings) because any jewelry may break, scratch or cut a partner while training. Piercings will tear out and injure the wearer. The dress code for class is a full uniform and belt. Basic Introductory Program students wear a white uniform. Elite Team, Masters Training, and Black Belt Club students must wear their respective team uniforms. *In the event that you haven t purchased a gi, or you aren t in the required class uniform, you must line up at the end of the line. Only students in FULL uniform have the right to line up by rank from the front of the line. Requirements for Belt Testing As you will see on the following pages, each color belt has the requirements clearly outlined. The stripe system is designed to minimize the level of exam failures in our program, for no one attends a test without going through a rigorous pre-approval process that determines their eligibility for advancement. Our testing process is designed for students to advance in rank every two months. We track their progress throughout the two month cycle, and in the event they are falling behind, private lessons are offered and encouraged. Missing tests and waiting too long to advance is a sure-fire way to get discouraged and drop out. Once cleared to test, the student will then be informed of the next opportunity to test. This information is also available on the website. Simply click on the calendar and it will display a schedule of days that belt testing is available. Once you have been scheduled by your instructor to test (Black Stripe), get ready, because you are in for an experience! Our tests are designed to challenge you in many

ways, such as character, skill, attitude and courage. Bring your cameras and camcorders if you wish. The dress code for a belt test is a CLEAN, FULL (top and bottom), WHITE GI for Basic Introductory Program students, Team Uniforms for Elite Team and Masters Training students, or Black Belt Club Members. This is an extremely formal occasion. The fee for belt promotion is $45.00 (this includes a mandatory $10.00 home practice DVD that the student will use for home practice hours) This fee covers the new belt and official ranking under our style s founder, Grandmaster J. Pat Burleson. This is extremely important, because the belt a student wears is really only as valuable as the instructor who endorses it. A belt with the Burleson name is respected anywhere, especially if it is black. Martial Arts Code of Conduct Always address ALL instructors, parents, adults and teachers as Sir/Ma am or by Master/Mr./Mrs./Ms./Miss (last name) Never address them by their first name! Always answer questions asked by an instructor with an answer ending in Sir/Ma am, or respond to instructions or corrections with a loud Yes Sir/Ma am! Follow all dress codes for classes and belt tests (remove jewelry). When arriving late for a class, always wait to ask permission before entering. You must ask, May I have permission to join class, Sir/Ma am? bow, and THEN enter. Show proper respect to ALL black belts, regardless of age, by bowing to them when greeting them, and always refer to them by last name. Upon attaining the rank of black belt, an individual has more than earned the right to be known as a Mr./Mrs./Ms./Miss. (last name) Eliminate the words Yea, Uh huh, Yep, Nuh uh and Nope from your vocabulary.

Never wear your belt in public unless you are officially representing your school. This includes tournaments, demonstrations, etc. This does NOT include show and tell at school, fast food restaurants and Halloween. You are free to wear the gi, but take off the belt and leave it in the car, or at home. Make sure your gi is clean when wearing it to class. Learn the correct way to tie your belt. NEVER use your karate for anything but self defense and practice. This means no horseplay, and certainly no fighting for any reason other than self defense. Unwarranted fights are grounds for losing your belt, and then being expelled from the Legends Martial Arts program. Always practice your karate weekly. You should spend at least as much time practicing as you do in class. When arriving for class, or staying after class, make sure you are behaving in an appropriate manner. You are always representing Legends Martial Arts. Always allow other people to go in front of you, and hold the door open for them anytime you enter or exit a building or room. Always respond to any and all acts of courtesy and kindness with a Thank you Sir/ Ma am. Always. Never play or speak in class at all, unless instructed to do so. Take good care of your body, eat properly and sleep adequately. Groom yourself well too; brush teeth regularly and bathe regularly. While sparring, always observe these rules:

1. always bow before and after sparring. 2. always tap gloves or shake hands before and after sparring. 3. always behave courteously and politely congratulating your opponent when they score a hit on you. 4. always use control, especially when sparring a smaller or less skilled opponent. 5. never use more power than your opponent. 6. never act in an arrogant or boastful manner EVER! 7. if ever you become angry stop sparring immediately and bow out of the match. 8. never argue or show a bad attitude to an official or judge this includes you too, parents!! This type of behavior may be allowed in sporting events, but it is in direct violation of everything that makes us martial artists. By the way, the Martial Arts aren t a sport; they are a way of living. We compete only to sharpen our skills and to show how we can maintain our character skills under duress. Kicking dirt on the referee has no place in martial arts.

Red Star overall character skills student must turn in a completed red form to the instructor to receive this star on their belt. White Star specific life skill and leadership work at home. Students must complete questions and be graded adequately by parents to receive white star (Elite, Masters, and Black Belt Club students only). Blue Star specific life skill and leadership work at school. Students must be graded adequately by their school teacher to receive white star (Elite, Masters, and Black Belt Club students only). White basics - These are combat striking techniques that are used in sparring and self-defense. Kicking and punching techniques that are taken from the systems of Tae Kwon Do, Karate and Boxing. Red - self defense - These are realistic attacks that must be defended in a variety of ways. This is the most diverse part of our curriculum because techniques are utilized from several different arts, such as Thai Boxing, Aikido and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, to create a very functional Blue kata This is the art form of karate and Tae Kwon Do. We use these patterns to preserve the tradition of martial arts and to learn the dynamic concepts that give the martial artist exceptional force and power. Black CERTIFICATION APPROVED TO TEST This stripe is given out during the last 2 weeks prior to testing. It will only be given to students who have attended enough classes, have Leadership Stars, practice hours and sufficient time at rank.
