Elkins High School Barbara Whitaker May 2011 Dear Elkins Parents of 2011 Graduates: Elkins High School is proud to have your son/daughter as a member of the 2011 graduating class. We hope this graduation will be the first step toward a lifetime of success and happiness. The graduation ceremony will be held Saturday, June 4 at 6:00 pm at the Toyota Center. The following information will assure that the graduation ceremony runs smoothly: Parents and guests should arrive at the Toyota Center no earlier than 5:00 pm. You may enter the Toyota Center by the LaBranch entrance, located at the corner of Polk and LaBranch or the Jackson Street entrance, at the corner of Jackson and Polk. Parking is available in the parking garage and also in exterior lots around the Toyota Center. We have been informed that the cost for parking may range from $10-$20. Seating for parents and guests will be on the Main Concourse Level only. Seniors should arrive no later than 5:15 pm. Students must enter the Toyota Center through the Bell Street entrance, located on the south side of the arena (immediately across from the parking garage). Once inside, seniors will be directed down the stairs to their staging area. Parents will not be allowed to enter this area with seniors before or after graduation. If you wish to use your video camera, you may film the ceremony from your seat. A professional video of the ceremony may be ordered prior to, as well as the day of graduation from Star Video. The video order form is included with this letter. The Toyota Center prohibits the use of noisemakers, laser pointers, beach balls, helium balloons, etc. Such items will be confiscated and not returned. Purses and bags of parents and guests will be checked at the doors. Backpacks will not be allowed into the Toyota Center. All graduates must follow the District s dress code to participate in graduation ceremonies, including guidelines that apply to facial hair and acceptable hair length for young men and appropriate shoes for young ladies. Your student has specific guidelines regarding dress code. Absolutely no one will be allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony who is not clean shaven and in dress code. Please remind your graduate NOT to bring a purse, camera, sunglasses or CELL PHONE. These items may not be taken onto the Arena floor and must be left behind the curtain in the staging area. Any cell phones, cameras, As principal of Elkins High School, I am looking forward to the graduation ceremony for the class of 2011. With your assistance, we will continue the great traditions set by previous graduating classes at Elkins High School. Sincerely, purses, etc. brought in by students will be placed into a box with the risk of loss since we will not be able to guarantee their protection. Items may not be picked up until the Wednesday, June 8th. Females: Dress with dark shoes (avoid excessively high heels) Everyone: No shorts, tennis shoes, flip-flops, or sandals. Anyone not following the stated dress code guidelines will not be permitted to participate in the graduation ceremony. MALES- PLEASE NOTE THAT ABSOLUTELY NO ONE WILL BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GRADUATION CEREMONY WHO IS NOT CLEAN SHAVEN! Caps and gowns are to be carried into the Toyota Center; do not wear your gown. TIME AND PARKING Plan to arrive at the Toyota Center by 5:15 p.m. Park in the parking garage or one of the exterior parking lots. There is no free parking. Parking will cost a minimum of $10, with some lots costing as much as $20. Handicapped parking is available in the parking garage for the same price. GRADUATION PARKING SPECIAL NEEDS If you have any questions regarding special needs for parking and/or seating for the elderly and /or handicapped individuals, please call the Toyota Center @ 713-758-7200.

WHERE TO REPORT Enter the Toyota Center at the Bell Street entrance that is located on the south side of the arena (immediately across from the parking garage). Once inside, seniors will be directed to their staging area. We will assemble in graduation order (just like we did in practice). You need to quickly find your row and seat. (Blue is the color code for the right side and yellow is the color code for the left side.) Locate your seat as quickly as possible. Do not stand around visiting. PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT BRING PURSES, CAMERAS, CELL PHONES, OR OTHER PERSONAL ITEMS. THERE IS NO PLACE TO SECURE THESE ITEMS AND THEY CANNOT BE CARRIED DURING THE CEREMONY. Any and all of these items will be confiscated. You will have to pick up confiscated items at Elkins High School on Wednesday, June 8 after 10:00 a.m. Parents and guests should arrive at the Toyota Center no earlier than 5:00 p.m. Parents and guests can enter the Toyota Center by the LaBranch entrance, located at the corner of Polk and LaBranch or the Jackson Street entrance at the corner of Jackson and Polk. Parents may not enter the Bell Street entrance. PROCESSIONAL At 5:50 p.m., we will begin moving from the seating area. You will need to carefully listen to and pay attention to your row sponsor. This staff member will be directing your row. Starting with the top rows on each side, the first row will stand, move towards the center aisle, down to the arena floor, and to the back of the curtains. At EXACTLY 6:00 p.m., the band will begin to play and the processional will begin. IF YOU ARE NOT IN YOUR ASSIGNED SEAT AT 5:50 p.m., YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PROCESS WITH THE CLASS. You will be seated on one side of the arena area and will be allowed to join your classmates when your row comes forward to be recognized. IN OTHER WORDS- DON T BE LATE!! When you march in, remain standing until the entire class has entered. Your tassel will be on the right side before you graduate. Watch the row sponsor at the end of the row for a signal about when to stand. Your row will stand all at one time and file out. When you reach the podium, an announcer will call out your name and you will walk across the stage. MANY people will be there to shake your hand. Shake with your right hand and reach for your diploma cover with your left hand. After you receive your diploma cover and are walking off the stage, move your tassel to the left side. As you exit the ramp, move quickly to the photography spot to have your picture taken. File back into your respective row and be seated.

CLOSING CEREMONY At the end of the ceremony, we will sing the Alma Mater together. On the last word of the Alma Mater, you may throw your cap in the air. Remove your tassel before throwing your cap and throw it straight up. The caps are pointed and dangerous, so do not look up. You should have your name written in the inside of your cap. YOU MAY NOT PICK UP YOUR CAP IF YOU THROW IT. The caps are picked up following the ceremony and will be returned to EHS and kept for one week in the front office. After one week they will be discarded. THE SCHOOL IS IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR CAP, SO IF YOU WANT TO KEEP IT, DON T THROW IT! You will follow your row sponsor as we exit. Once you are behind the curtain, you must exit to the main concourse level and out of the Toyota Center. Family and friends MAY NOT come back stage at any time. Make plans to meet your family somewhere outside of the Toyota Center. You will not be allowed to reenter the concourse area.

Elkins High School Alma Mater Our Alma Mater, Elkins High The, School We Love And, Hold So Dear. We Will Raise Our Banner, To The Highest, Elkins Knights Have No Fear. We Will Sing Our Praise, As Each Race Is Run, We Will Strive To Be The Best. And The Day Will Come, When Our Task Is Done, Elkins Knights Will Pass The Test.
