L0E Safety Meeting July 27, 2015 1
Why are we here? ² L0E use is changing significantly We will all have to change our habits! ² To inform lab personnel most affected by the changes ² To gather feedback on possible improvements Let me know (now or anytime) of issues, suggestions, complaints that are safety-related 2
Radiation Safety Changes ² ERL / MLC operations will commence soon! ² Status change All of L0E will be a controlled area! Badge always required! Ø Includes DRE hallway (old opr offices, hallway to LS2) Outside door will be locked 24/7 card access only Rollup door must remain closed except when necessary to open When rollup door is open, the opener has the responsibility to closely monitor access by unauthorized personnel Badges should NOT be stored in L0E (NEXT SLIDE) 3
New L0E Badge Rack In hallway between stockroom and 40-ton door. You need to tell Dwight soon if you want your badge there instead of CESR control room May put dosimeters there as well Safety B.Heltsley Jul 27, 2015 4
More Rad Safety ² Survey ( area ) badges in place will document that we keep below 100 mrad per year ² Real-time monitors will soon be in place will trip off ERL & MLC at 2 mrem/h at any probe ² Each step in operations requires a Stage Review Initial running at low power/currents is done after hours, and radiation surveys outside the perimeter are taken Committee reviews presentation by the Permit Holder (Bruce Dunham) to allow running up to a new set of Administrative Limits 5

ERL Stage Reviews 8
8 Stage Reviews since 2011 9
Survey form to be filled out during any off-hours test Nine spots currently thought to be good survey points. We will explore during early surveys if slightly different spots are better choices 10
More Rad Safety ² We want to prevent line-of-sight radiation, especially as viewed from the 2 nd floor above the Vac Lab ² Will install shielding as necessary, either locally at MLC/ERL or along the south shielding wall Fire Safety ² We will need to assure adequate deployment of fire extinguishers inside and outside of the exclusion area 11
Cryogenic Safety ² The program controlling ventilation in L0E has been modified to have a minimum amount of new air at all times in order to compensate for vented liquid nitrogen. Eric Smith conducted calculations of the required rate of fresh air. ² Catastrophic releases of cryogens Requires immediate evacuation of L0E Are not expected to result in serious oxygen deficiency due to the size of L0E Will not be subtle (loud noises!)
