EASTER 2017 Widden Whinnies Celebrating 150 Years IN 2017, internationally renowned nursery Widden Stud are celebrating 150 years of operation making our iconic Australian farm the oldest continuously family owned and run thoroughbred stud in the world.

Also celebrating the same milestone is the Inglis family, whose famed thoroughbred auction house at Newmarket in Randwick has been pivotal in the success of Widden Stud. "We couldn't be more excited with the group we have assembled for Easter this year. As participants in the inaugural William inglis sale in 1867, we're thrilled to celebrate together with Inglis our 150th year in 2017." said Widden's Antony Thompson. "It's a draft that has a nice blend of in-form stallions such as SEBRING, I AM INVINCIBLE, REDOUTE'S CHOICE, SNITZEL, STAR WITNESS and FASTNET ROCK as well as exciting young sires ZOUSTAR, ALL TOO HARD, PIERRO and SO YOU THINK. It's that age old adage... there will be something for everyone!" In the 2014/15 racing season 10% of Australia's Group 1 races were won by horses born and raised at Widden, including Australian Horse of the Year DISSIDENT. Last racing season Widden Stud was again the nation's leading vendor of Group 1 winners with YANKEE ROSE, PRIZED ICON, STRATUM STAR and VANBRUGH all saluting at the highest level. Stratum pair STRATUM STAR and TAKEDOWN, two horses born and raised at Widden, finished off 2016 off by winning $1 million Group 1 races also. 2017 will be the last Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale at Newmarket before the company moves to its new headquarters of Riverside Stables at Warwick Farm in Sydney s south west. Widden Stud seek to end this era with the grand flourish it deserves presenting a stunning draft of 31 yearlings, 16 of them by our own stallions. Further information about our yearlngs is available further into this edition of Widden Whinnies. Come and celebrate with us at Stable 3 Rows K 1 5, L and M as you begin the search for your next champion at Widden Stud the Valley of Champions. March Stakes Double for Sebring THE START OF MARCH heralds the beginning of a new season of autumn racing and quickly delivered a pair of new stakes-winners for our flagship sire Sebring. The youngest stallion in the Australian Top 10 Sires table, Sebring has two multiple Group 1 winning sons at stud from just his first crop Seannie and Turbo Miss. Exciting two year-old filly Seannie led home a stakes trifecta for Widden Stud sires in the Listed WATC Supremacy Stakes at Ascot in Perth. A stylish debut winner at Ascot in October, the Simon Miller trained Seannie resumed from a spell to score a dominant two and a half length win in the 1000 metre dash over Sebring gelding Keeper Keen with Your Song gelding Soundcheck in third place. With two easy wins in as many starts, Seannie is now favourite for the upcoming $500,000 Group 2 WATC Karrakatta Plate on April 1. Bred and retained to race by Cape Falls Thoroughbreds, Seannie is the best of three winners from unraced Choisir TURBO MISS, THE LATEST GROUP WINNER FOR SEBRING mare Uncanny Choice, a half-sister to stakes-winner Dubleanny from the family of champion filly November Rain. Seannie is the 25th stakes-winner for Sebring, who sired his 24th on the same day at Flemington when Turbo Miss won the Group 3 VRC Frances Tressady Stakes. A half-sister to this season s Group 1 winning three yearold Russian Revolution, Turbo Miss boosted her worth immeasurably with her first Black type victory. The Darren Weir trained mare was fit and ready to fire at her third run back from a spell and scored a long neck win over Group 1 winner Rising Romance in the 1400 metre mares contest. Retained to race by her breeders John Stuart Investments, Turbo Miss is the second stakes-winner and one of four winners from Ballet D Amour (USA), an imported daughter of Stravinsky. She traces back to legendary matriarch Fanfreluche, so Turbo Miss will be a most appealing broodmare prospect when her racing days are done.

Nicconi Most Popular for 2016 SIRCCONI, CAULFIELD GUINEAS GROUP 1 BOUND AFTER WINNING THE VRC SIRES GROUP 2 THE MOST POPULAR SIRE in Australia for 2016 covering 226 mares, Widden Stud s Nicconi featured with a new stakes-winner at Flemington on March 11 when two year-old colt Sircconi scored a bold front running win in the Group 2 VRC Sires Produce Stakes. Prepared by Peter Morgan and ridden by Linda Meech, Sircconi was second at Sandown at his first run back from a break having finished sixth on debut at Moonee Valley back in November. Up in class and up in distance, Sircconi relished the challenge, leading all the way and fighting off the challengers to win the 1400 metre contest by a short half head over spring stakes-winner Aspect. He has a high cruising speed and has the best attitude, said Linda Meech. I m just so excited about him for the spring. Sircconi was an $80,000 Inglis Classic purchase for his trainer from the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft and was a successful pinhook having been bought first at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale for $25,000. Bred by Access Bloodstock, Sircconi is the second winner from Kiwi bred mare On Credit, who comes from a stout New Zealand family as her grand-dam is Group 3 winning Noble Bijou (USA) mare The Dimple. It s the family of Group 1 winner Irish Chance and The Jewel as well as current Group 1 star La Bella Diosa, so it will be no surprise to see Sircconi excel over longer journeys as his career unfolds. Sircconi is the second juvenile stakes-winner this season for Nicconi joining promising filly Time Awaits from the astute Tony McEvoy stable. $2.4 Million and Counting for Stratum Star IN AN ERA when talented colts are whisked off to stud before we have barely scratched the surface of their true ability, a horse like Stratum Star stands out like a beacon. The five year-old Stratum stallion was a spring stakeswinner at three for the Darren Weir stable before blossoming at four to win the Group 1 MRC Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at 1400 metres. Kept in work for another season, Stratum Star reeled off three successive wins over the summer in three different states raking in over $1.3 million for his lucky group of owners. He won the Group 1 WATC Kingston Town Classic (1800m) in Perth, the Magic Millions Trophy (2200m) at the Gold Coast and then the Group 2 MRC Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield before running a brave fourth in the Group 1 VRC Australian Cup (2000m). He is a good tough horse, a magnificent looking horse, obviously he is not going to be around much longer. There is a fair bit of interest from studs to stand him, said Darren Weir after Stratum Star won at Caulfield. I think he will make a great stallion and when you see him in the yard he is a beautiful horse, tough and sound. You ve got to be a tough horse to do what he has done, he s just got the best attitude, he s sound and loves to work. He is the perfect horse really. That perfect horse was bred and offered for sale by Widden Stud fetching $165,000 at the Magic Millions and has now won $2.4 million. Sadly, his sire Stratum is no longer with us but we look forward to selling the last of his offspring over the next couple of years and we have three stunning yearlings by him to offer at Inglis Easter. STRATUM STAR

Stars Align for Witness THE CHAMPION two and three yearold colt of his generation, Star Witness has been popular from the get go with breeders since retiring to Widden Stud in 2011, but that popularity soared to new heights in 2016. Star Witness covered his largest book of 220 mares last spring and was one of only seven sires in Australia to cover 200 plus mares. Broodmare owners beat a path to Star Witness during the spring as two outstanding three year olds emerged to lift him from being a promising young sire into the leading Australian third crop sire. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained filly Global Glamour completed a rare double when winning the Group 1 ATC Flight Stakes at Randwick followed by the Group 1 MRC Thousand Guineas in Melbourne. Team Hawkes have always had a huge opinion of powerhouse colt Star Turn, who was fifth in the Group 1 MRC Blue Diamond last year and sixth in the Group 1 ATC Golden Slipper. He resumed as a three year-old to win the time honoured Group 3 ATC San Domenico Stakes and has been in the top echelon of three year-old sprinters throughout the season. A Group 2 win against older sprinters in the MRC Schillaci Stakes and Group 1 placings at his past three starts indicate a Group 1 victory cannot be far away for the handsome chestnut, who now runs in the colours of Vinery Stud. With new star Furhyk, bred and raced by Michael Christian and Siobhan Miller, winning the Group 3 MRC Kevin Hayes Stakes, adding to the success there can be no doubt Star Witness is riding the crest of a winning wave. FURHYK, IMPRESSIVE NEW GROUP WINNER FOR STAR WITNESS SHAMUS AWARD X PINK SIRIS 400K MM FILLY Zoustar and Shamus Award Make Magic LAUNCHING NEW STALLIONS in the marketplace is always exciting and rewarding with our young guns Zoustar and Shamus Award poised for further success at the 2017 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. The 2017 Magic Millions Yearling Sale in January gave buyers a taste of what they can expect from Zoustar and Shamus Award at Newmarket with both stallions afforded a warm reception at the Gold Coast. Zoustar had 32 yearlings sell at an average $265,156 with his top seller a filly from Combat Kitty that we sold for $550,000 to David Redvers/ Mulcaster Bloodstock who were terrific supporters of his progeny purchasing his four top lots from the sale which will be trained by Chris Waller. Shamus Award had nine yearlings average $170,556 with his top seller a filly from Pink Siris that was sold by Willow Park Stud for $400,000 and bought by Ciaron Maher Racing/Dermot Farrington Bloodstock. Zoustar is the most represented first season sire at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale with 26 entries, while Shamus Award will garner his share of interest as the sire of She Will Reign s half-sister that will be offered as Lot 86 by Yarraman Park. Your Song a Hit Leading First Season Sire! IN A COMPETITIVE GROUPING of first crop sires this season, Fastnet Rock s Group 1 winning son Your Song has been the first to gather momentum siring six individual winners and three additional stakes horses from his first 17 runners up to the second week of March. Split Lit, Miss Exfactor, Tabbing, Bold Kingston, Hope Ya Don t Mind and Girl in a Million have all saluted, while Peristrophe, Soundcheck and the hugely promising Memento have all gained Black type. A homebred for Torryburn Stud, two year-old filly Memento was second at her first two starts in metropolitan company before charging home for a fast finishing third in the Group 3 ATC Magic Night Stakes on March 11 behind Tulip. Her trainer Anthony Cummings, who also prepared Your Song, has the filly entered for several feature events at The Championships, so Memento may well put Your Song s name in lights before the Sydney Autumn Carnival is over. Your Song is currently the leading Australian first crop sire by winners with just four months of the racing season to come.
